Mindy (the receptionist with blue fingernails) called in sick one day so Nat from accounting took over her desk temporarily. After a few hours she paged Norman and requested that he cover for a few minutes while she ran to pick up lunch. Norman agreed to it; he'd covered the front desk before. It was a cinch -- he still had the chain of yellow paper clips he'd made while waiting for the phone to ring. It was hanging on his bulletin board next to the office extension list and the refrigerator menu for Lily's Diner. The phone never made a peep. He enjoyed the silence and the change of scenery.
Norman eased into the chair, ready to take on the world, when the phone rang.
