I've recently started practicing NSR. I feel good about my practice and I am doing it mostly by-the-book as far as adhering to the instructions in the NSR manual. With one exception. The instructions are real explicit about doing the meditation for 15 minutes, but not using any kind of timer. This is what the manual says on the subject:
It is important never to use an alarm of any kind to time your sessions, no even one such as a meditation timer. Using an alarm of any kind prohibits variations in meditation time and may shock the nervous system. You will find after a few sessions that you develop a fairly accurate feeling or intuition for when the time is up, and you will only need to open one eye just enough to check the time and verify that the 15 minutes have passed.
I on the other hand am using the Insight Timer android app. I have it configured to emit a very subtle, single, singing bowl tone at 15 minutes and again at 20 minutes. This seems like a pleasant, innocent, and practical way to keep track of time and the tone is no more pronounced than many other subtle sounds in my environment, such as a bird chirping outside, or my refrigerator cycling on or off.
My question to this forum is what are your thoughts on using a meditation timer to time your sessions? If you know what other nondirective teachers say on this subject, especially TM teachers, I'd like to learn that too.
