Content ideas for a History Term Paper About Household Appliances and the Role They Had on Women in the 20th Century. history

Writing a Term Paper and so far I have vacuums, ovens and refrigerators as topics for this thesis: Household appliances chained women to in-home labor. If you have any suggestions for what to write about feel free to comment, thanks.

I'm also writing about WWI and WWII and how the roles of women changed going into the wars and coming out of the wars.

PS: If you could include a link or two that would be very much appreciated.

Norman's Lifelong Fantasy lifeofnorman

Norman thoughtfully stared at his refrigerator. He had been standing like this for about five minutes, and the task was becoming tedious. His eyes scanned the many images taped to his inspiration board; the only thing in his house that brought purpose to the daily struggle he called work. He peered at an image of a red Ferrari in particular, which had been a passing fantasy of his that began when he was a boy. Notions of wind, adrenaline, and careless speed mixed with a roaring passion danced within his head. "Oh, but all things must come to an end" he thought. He gently removed the Ferrari from its shrine and set it in the trash. After all, Norman could not afford to carelessly purchase a car right now. Especially not right before tax season.

Ideas for Someone Who Travels A Ton EatCheapAndHealthy

Been trying to figure out what I can do instead of eating out all the time, which is typically once or twice a day. I try to go for the salads or small meals, fruit smoothies, etc. But working out, not always having a microwave or refrigerator because of hotels and all that make it hard not to order a fatass burger with fries every now and again. Keep in mind and please believe me when I say this, it is not realistic for me to bring cookware with me.

I've been trying to figure this out for a while. Like right now I have a mini fridge, but only enough room in it for a couple water bottles, not big at all and I have no microwave. Anyone else been in my position and can add some insight?

How to plant trees from Seed trees

What Stops tree Seeds From Germinating?

There are a number of important reasons a seed refuses to germinate under artificial conditions. Two major causes for unsuccessful tree seed germination are hard seed coats and dormant seed embryos. Both conditions are species specific and every tree species has to subject the seeds to unique conditions to assure germination. Treating the seed properly is necessary before germination occurs and a seedling can be assured.

Seed scarification and stratification are the most common methods of seed treatment and they will increase the chances of seed or nut germination.

Scarification and Stratification

Scarification - The hard protective coating on some tree seed is nature's way of protecting the seed.

Pull the seeds from a cone and rub them gently between your fingers to remove the wings.

Soak the seeds in water for 24 hours. After soaking, put them on a folded paper towel and allow them to dry for an additional 24 hours. Put the seeds in a zip-top plastic bag that has three times as much space for air as that occupied by the seeds. Don't include any dirt, fertilizer or other supporting medium in the bag. Seal the bag and put it in the refrigerator for at least four weeks prior to planting. Fill small containers that are at least 6 inches deep to the top with coarse potting soil. Use a pencil to make depressions that are 2 to 3 inches deep. Drop two seeds into each hole and cover them with potting soil. Water the soil enough to keep it moist but not soggy and add fertilizer that has a little or no nitrogen. Keep the trays in an indoor environment in which the temperature remains at 70 degrees Fahrenheit during the day, for four to six weeks, then thin seedlings to one per container. [NYC] Landlord keeps lying to me; I'm worried he won't return security deposit legaladvice

I'm renting an apartment in Manhattan, New York. The landlord has lied to me just about every time we've interacted since I signed the lease, and I learned very quickly to do everything over email so that there's a written record of what we've discussed. I intend to move out when my lease is up. However, I've already paid him my last month's rent, and 2 months of security deposit (I know, these should have been red flags, but this is the first apartment I've rented in Manhattan, and I didn't know what was normal here), and am now concerned that he might not return the security deposit. What can I do now to prepare for any problems that might arise when I move out? Is this something I should get a lawyer for? If so, what sort of lawyer should I get and when is an appropriate time to do so?

I suspect he won't return the security deposit because although I've taken reasonable care of the apartment, he has several reviews on Yelp (who knew Yelp reviewed landlords? I sure didn't before signing the lease) from former tenants complaining of the same problems I've experienced and then ending with the guy refusing to return their deposits. Thanks in advance for the advice!

Things I have been lied to about:

  • The apartment was gut renovated before I moved in: brand new floors, kitchen appliances, cabinets, bathroom, etc. Landlord wanted to start the lease on June 1, I talked him into starting June 15. With an extra 2 weeks before the lease started, I expected all renovations to be done by the time the lease started. When I picked up the keys on June 15, the landlord's assistant told me that it was nearly ready and would be finished by the end of the day. I asked if I could get a small discount on my rent because the apartment wasn't ready, and she said no. I went to the apartment the next day, and it was still missing a refrigerator, stove, dishwasher, microwave, kitchen drain, bathroom faucet, living room radiator, and bedroom radiator, and the apartment was full of busy construction workers. I have pictures of this. I wrote to the landlord, who replied that everything would be finished that day. That evening, I was still missing the 'fridge, stove, and bathroom faucet, and wrote to the landlord about it again. He said everything would be finished by the next day. By the evening of the next day, all I was missing was the stove. I wrote to him again, and he assured me that it would be installed before I moved in on June 25.
  • By the evening of June 24, the stove was not installed. I lost my temper and wrote an angrier email than was prudent, saying I'd lost confidence that it would be installed by the next morning, and asking when it would actually be installed and whether I could get a discount on the rent (this was the second time I had broached the rent topic, and the first time since I'd picked up the keys). The landlord replied that we had discussed the stove, he had offered me a temporary one, and I had declined because I didn't need it until I moved in, and it would be in by then. He also wrote "I find this email offensive both in its tone and the request for a reduced rent. If this is the way it's going to be, I suggest you not move in and come by the office and I will gladly refund every dollar you paid and rent the apartment to someone else but I will not entertain this nonsense any further." I replied that I had neither recollection nor record of that stove conversation, pointed out that everything we had done since I picked up the keys was over email so I had records of it all, and that to the best of my knowledge this conversation had not taken place. I consulted with some friends, whose consensus was that the offer of returning my money if I don't move in was probably another lie, and I should not accept it. I would gladly have accepted it and moved elsewhere if I thought the offer was genuine.
  • I moved in on June 25. A temporary stove was installed that day, and a permanent one was installed June 26. On June 27 I fixed the gas leak, but that's another story.
  • I have asked several times over several months to have my name listed on the building intercom. Every time, he has replied that he'll do it soon. It has now been over 8 months, and I've given up trying to get my name on the intercom.
  • According to page 9 of the New York Tenants' Rights Guide, "Landlords of buildings with six or more apartments [my building has approximately 20 units] must put all security deposits in New York bank accounts earning interest at the prevailing rate. Each tenant must be informed in writing of the bank’s name and address and the amount of the deposit." After two months, I had not received this information, so I wrote to the landlord asking for it. He did not reply. A week later, I emailed him again, and he claimed he replied to my previous email and asked for details of what I wanted. I pointed out that I had neither record nor recollection of his reply. I showed him the PDF I linked here, and he emailed me the address of the bank and wrote "You will receive a year end statement in January showing the balance of your security deposit."
  • I did not receive a year end statement in January. In mid-February, I emailed back asking where it was, and got no response. A week later, I emailed again about it, and have gotten no response again. I visited the bank, but they refused to let me see an account statement because I was not the account holder (which is probably the right response on their part).

Not sure if relevant:

  • In the lobby of the building is paperwork describing the fire equipment for the building, but it is clearly paperwork for a different building. This is north of 100th street, and the paperwork claims that the fire escape exits onto a street south of 90th. It also claims that there is a fire sprinkler system in the building but not in the common areas, but no apartment in the building (that I've seen) has a sprinkler in it.
  • My apartment did not come with a smoke detector in it, even though page 21 of the Tenants' Rights Guide says they are supposed to. The guide also says the landlord can charge me $50 to install one, so I didn't bother mentioning this to him and bought my own for $10.
  • There is a laundry room in the basement of the building. It has 2 washers and 2 dryers. When I moved in, one of the dryers was broken and had a sign on it asking people not to plug it in again until it was actually fixed this time. I know the super was aware of this problem, and I believe he had informed the landlord (though I did not speak to the landlord about this myself). It took 6 months for the dryer to be plugged in, though I have not tried it out for fear of wasting my time and money on a dryer that is still broken.
  • The apartment is not rent controlled nor rent stabilized.
  • This is a pre-war building with something like 18 or 20 apartments in it.
  • I have heard that it is not uncommon in Manhattan for people to get their security deposit "back" by not paying their last month of rent. However, I have already paid my last month of rent, and the security deposit was 2 months of rent, so it's a pretty sizable amount.
  • In my opinion, I'm a model tenant. I've rented apartments for the past decade, in California, North Carolina, Queens, and now Manhattan. I've never had a noise complaint, and I've always gotten my security deposit back in full. In the past 5 years, I've never paid my rent late, and although I paid rent late twice before that, I quickly paid the late fee as well as the rent (and my excuse is very lame: I could afford the rent no problem, and just lost track of what day it was).
  • My lease requires that I inform the landlord of my intention to move out 2 months ahead of time. Given his propensity to make up conversations we haven't had, I'm unsure whether to do this via email, handing him a letter in person, or using certified mail.
  • I quickly became paranoid of interactions with the landlord, so I have pictures of every rent check I sent him, every envelope I mailed the checks in, and usually a picture of me at the mailbox with the letter. but this has not been an issue so far.

(thanks for letting me vent)

[HOUSING] $933 - Large sunny private room/bathroom for rent in Culver City/Palms area LAlist

Hi Reddit,

I'm looking for a tenant to replace me because I am moving in with my boyfriend April 1st. It is the master bedroom up for rent, with a large closet and full private bathroom. The monthly rent is $933.33 plus internet and electricity (around $30 a month total). The room is in excellent condition and has a big window that catches lots of sunlight during the day. The house is shared with two other housemates who are young professionals that are very quiet and often out of the house. There is a main living room with hardwood floors throughout and a tiled kitchen with a large granite countertop, stove, new refrigerator and lots of cabinets. The apartment also has a patio to go out and enjoy the breeze. It's a very quiet street we live on with a school right next door and within close walking distance of a Ralph's, Oldfields, Bigfoot West, Venice Bakery and lots of other restaurants. Our neighbors in the apartment complex are very friendly and respectful. There is carport parking that is alternated between the housemates, meaning you would have 2 weeks in the garage and then 1 week parking on the street - I have never had any issues finding street parking right next to the house. It is nearby the metro and lots of bus stops as well.

We are looking for an easy-going, friendly person to take my room; somebody who is reasonably neat, doesn't throw huge ragers, and doesn't smoke. As I said above, the two housemates (one male and one female, both in their 20s) are nice and low-key people who keep to themselves. If this sounds like a good fit, please message me and I can send you photos of the place, and/or schedule a viewing.

Thanks, Broghan

LG LFX333975ST refrigerator, 50° F temperature fixit

So my refrigerator on the lowest settings (freezer & refrigerator) is sitting mid 40's/low 50's. I contacted LG, they did a smart diagnostic and told me that the temperature sensor is bad. I have verified the refrigerator fan is operating, checked ohms on both sensors, and checked output temperature after letting it run for 20 minutes.

The sensors are both reading 10-20k Ohms, and when I blasted them with canned air, they climbed to 50k+ ohms. I don't know what they should be reading but both of them act the same so I imagine they are fine. Does anyone know what they should read?

Now after taking it completely apart and putting it back together, I'm getting temperature readings of 32 ° at the top vent & 30 ° at the bottom.

So all in all does anyone have any other suggestions of what I should check or do? I'm waiting right now to see what temperature it goes down to after disassembling it, but that will take 8-10 hours. I already have a new sensor on order but, I don't think I need it now.

Sorry for my awful structure, I'm only (somewhat) hands on smart. Not great with explaining. Thank you

Please give me some advice on my awful home rental situation RealEstate

Hello! First off, I know this is a massive wall of text. I really appreciate your time. If you feel this would be better answered in a different subreddit, please, let me know where to post it. I'm looking for any information you guys might have regarding my current housing situation. I just moved into a small house at the beginning of February. The rent is $500 a month. When I first checked the place out, it seemed nice enough. It had new carpet, a very nicely redone bathroom tile, and a pretty incredible view. It is located on a magnificent pond right outside of my downtown area. It was obvious that the place was old, but I never imagined some of the problems it had.

The first and most important is the source of heating. It has a single natural gas heater that heats the whole house. When I first moved in, the model that was in the house was very old. I’m not sure of the exact year, but my guess would be it was from at least the 70’s to 80’s. The unit had what appeared to be some kind of heat spreaders inside, only two of them were broken in half and just sitting there on top of each other. Well, one night I heard a loud bump and I ran to investigate and both of them had fallen out of the heater while it was on. They were very hot, too hot to grab, so they sat on the carpet and left burn marks. I told the landlord this and she understood, acknowledged that it was her fault, and that was that. Well, a few nights later, I went to bed as usual, only to be woken up at 11:30 to a screeching carbon monoxide alarm. I called the fire department and they tested and confirmed that the CO levels were way too high for standard use of a gas heater. The next day I told my landlord, and she had the city come check the heater, who also apparently confirmed that the heater was the source of the problem, and recommended replacing it. She replaced it that day, and all seemed well on that front. That was about three weeks ago, my first week in the apartment. Things seemed fine with the new heater aside from one issue. It has a thermostat control with 5 settings. For some reason, on the lowest 2 settings, when the thermostat cuts the heater off, the flame flutters quite audibly for 1-5 minutes. It usually quit on its own, but I noticed that bumping the thermostat up to three made it quit, and it never had that problem on 3. Well, last night, I woke up at 3:30 to the very loud fluttering of the flame. I went to bump up the thermostat and went back to bed. An hour later, I woke up to a screeching CO detector again. It has gotten to the point where I do not feel safe sleeping in that house. This is the main problem I have with the place, but I will go into more detail below.

The second biggest problem I have with the place is the electric system. I don’t think it has been brought up to code since it was built in the 50’s-60’s. Half of the outlets don’t work. The house isn’t grounded, and there are only three 3-prong outlets in the entire house that were shoddily installed somewhat recently. I have had one outlet emit a huge spark when plugging in a light to it. The plugs that weren’t recently added (so roughly 90% of the plugs in the house) have lost all ability to hold a plug in place. Whenever I plug something into every single old outlet in the house, it practically falls out. The slightest wobble will cause it to tumble out. Finally, my dad and I were going to replace a ceiling fan in the bedroom, because two of the four ceiling fans that came with the place, didn’t work. He had a fan laying around from an old job he did, so we were going to put it up. We got the old one down and went to put the new one up only to find out that the old fan was connected to two hot wires as opposed to one hot, one neutral, and one ground. It was connected with two hot wires. The weirdest thing was, the switch only controlled one of the wires. Whenever the switch was in the ON position, one of the wires was hot, and the other was off. When the switch was in the OFF position, both wires were hot. Our guess is this is why two of the ceiling fans do not work. This is my second concern with the place. There are numerous other smaller problems that I will attempt to cover now. The dryer was broken when I moved in. I had my own washer and dryer that I wanted to bring when I moved in but the landlord did not have adequate storage to put hers so I had to sell mine. Upon attempting to dry my first load of clothes, the dryer did dry at all. The oven is also barely operational. One of the eyes doesn’t even work, the drip pans are completely corroded away, and the oven cooks absurdly fast. The house also requires a dehumidifier to be operational pretty much 24/7. I haven’t seen my first electric bill yet, but I am terrified to do so. If the dehumidifier goes off for 30 minutes the humidity jumps up to 80-85%. The refrigerator has a broken shelf inside of it. The back porch steps have one step that has completely rotted away. I have found a multitude of bugs and lizards in my place, so they are getting in somewhere. The windows are old and very poorly sealed. I woke up one morning to find mine bedside window sill covered in water. Every window in the house is constantly covered in moisture.

I could go on probably, but I feel like I have hit all the main concerns. My question is this. Is there anything I can do to get out of this lease if the landlord tries to fight me on it? I have read over the lease and there is nothing written in there about needing to get out of a lease early. It just says that it is a 12 month lease. I have already paid 1500 dollars (first &amp:amp: last month rent, as well as a holding fee to hold the place for one month). It is a tricky situation. My land lord is really a very nice lady. I know she has been having money troubles and her mother literally just died last week, so I hate to spring this on her, but I don’t feel safe living there, and I feel like it isn’t really suitable to be lived in, honestly. If you guys have any advice on how to handle the situation and ways to get out of this lease, I would really appreciate it. Thank you again for your time!

Top Working oily hair home remedy NoPoo

  1. Apple Cider Vinegar Apple cider vinegar is an effective home remedy for oily hair. The acetic acid in it helps balance the pH level of the scalp, which in turn helps control secretion of excess oil and reduces oil buildup on your hair. Plus, it works as a potent hair tonic for you to enjoy soft and shiny hair.

Mix two to three tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in a cup of water. After washing your hair with a mild shampoo, use this solution as a rinse. Wait for a few minutes, and then wash it off with cold water. Repeat two or three times a week.

  1. Lemon Juice Lemon is great for different types of scalp and hair problems, including oily hair. Lemon contains many vital vitamins and minerals that promote healthy hair. The acidic property of lemon helps balance the pH level of the scalp and controls oil secretion.

Mix the juice from two lemons in two cups of distilled water. You can also add three teaspoons of honey (optional). Apply this mixture on your scalp and hair, massaging it around for a few minutes. Leave it on for five minutes, and then wash it off with lukewarm water. Repeat three times a week for best results.

  1. Black Tea Black tea has an astringent known as tannic acid that helps prevent buildup of excess oil on the scalp by tightening the pores.

Add one to two tablespoons of black tea leaves to a cup of water. Boil it for 10 minutes. Strain the tea leaves and allow the solution to cool to room temperature. Pour this lukewarm mixture on your scalp and hair. Leave it on for five minutes, rinse it off, and then wash your hair with a mild shampoo. Repeat two or three times a week to get rid of oily hair.

  1. Aloe Vera The vitamins, minerals and enzymes present in aloe vera are very helpful for getting rid of oily hair. Aloe vera helps detoxify the scalp of impurities and control oil secretion, while also nourishing your hair roots. Plus, the gentle and soothing nature of aloe vera will keep your hair healthy.

Mix one teaspoon of aloe vera gel and one tablespoon of lemon juice in one cup of any mild shampoo. Wash your hair and allow the shampoo to remain on your hair for a few minutes before rinsing it off. Use this as a homemade shampoo whenever you shampoo your hair to control oiliness. You can store this homemade shampoo for up to a week in the refrigerator.

  1. Baking Soda The oil-absorbing quality of baking soda makes it a great home remedy for oily hair. Also, the alkaline nature of baking soda helps balance the pH level of the scalp and will reduce foul smell.

Mix one part baking soda in three parts water to make a paste. Apply it on damp hair. Leave it on for a few minutes, and then wash your hair with warm water. Use this treatment once or twice a week. Also, when you do not have time to shampoo your hair, you can use baking soda as a powerful dry shampoo. Put some baking soda in your hands and rub it all through your hair. Then brush your hair really well with a good quality brush. The baking soda will absorb all the grease. 6. Fuller’s Earth Being a natural absorbent, fuller’s earth can be used to solve the problem of oily hair. Plus, its mineral properties can balance the natural pH level of the scalp and improve blood circulation in the scalp.

Add a little water to three tablespoons of fuller’s earth to make a thick paste. (You can change the amount of fuller’s earth depending on the length of your hair.) Apply the paste on your scalp and hair. Leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes and then wash it off using lukewarm water. Use this treatment once a week or a few times a month.

So I haven't been remembering my dreams as well as I used to. I'm 17 years old, and I also have had incredibly sparce nightmares. And even then, they were super strange and had little to no cohesion. However, I had a very non-specific nightmare last night, it was probably the most terrifying nightmare/thing I've ever experienced. However, it was only because it was so dissimilar to anything that has happened before it.

A bit of context: I go to sleep playing podcasts, music, and more commonly, YouTube videos. Prior to the nightmare I can remember simply standing in front of my refrigerator, looking at pictures (loosely) pertaining to the video I was listening to at that moment. If I recall, there were some terrifying images, although nothing I can specifically remember: only that they were terrifying. As I said before, my dreams have no cohesion, so this may be entirely unrelated to what I was previously describing.

This is the scariest part. I found myself in blackness; pure darkness. In retrospect, it's likely my eyes were just closed. I was laying down in a bed (not that I could see it, I just remember it feeling like a bed.) I could hear was light rain and rolling thunder. But along with that, I could hear the video that was playing. All of a sudden, I start involuntarily shaking. I can feel headphones in my ears; presumably that's where the video's audio is coming from. The shaking becomes more and more intense, almost to the point of convulsion. It's what I imagine a seizure would feel like. The only thought I could think was "I CAN'T LISTEN TO THIS ANYMORE. GET THESE HEADPHONES OUT", it was a more distressed feeling than I can remember in recent memory. I want to use my arms to rip out my headphones, but I can't; I just keep shaking. I finally manage to control my arms, and in one motion I sit up as fast as I can to rip out the headphones... only they aren't there. This is because I was awake, in my room. I was sitting up, on my bed, looking at the wall. I could still hear the video playing, exactly where it was from when I was still dreaming.

Some strange things I'd like to mention are that the videos themselves are comedic. They're from a channel called Game Grumps, and there is nothing remotely terrifying about them. Which is when looking back at the scenario in retrospect, it's kinda funny. But the feeling was far from comedic.

I also would like to mention the time frame, because the whole series of dreams happened within an hour and a half. It was 11:00 PM when I had went to bed, and I remember waking up at 12:30 AM. Usually the dreams I have last much longer before I wake up, which is why I find this strange. I almost wonder if those were the only things I dreamt of.

Well, that's about it. Easily the most surreal, creepy, almost cryptic nightmare I've ever had. It almost sounds like something out of a short horror story. I do believe that dreams can tell you what you are currently feeling. I don't believe they can predict the future, however. My life has taken a much needed turn for the better, so having such a nightmare seems out of place. I also believe that not EVERY single dream has meaning, so It's probably nothing. Still though, what do you guys think?

Texas- Where should we start in order to adopt a little girl and make sure her mom will never be in the picture legaladvice

My wife has known this little girl ever since she was born, my wife's mother and her raised the girl until she was 3 years old. After she turned 3 her mother who finally got out of jail wanted her daughter back. So she regained custody of her daughter, this woman is from Honduras and was deported but not before she had two other kids. A man that was a friend of the little girl's mother (this friend was just a guy that bought alot of drugs from the mother so basically he befriended his dealer) gained some type of custody of them and took care of them. This is where me and my wife came into the picture, my wife would babysit them because the man would leave to work. There are about 6 months of this and the little girl's mother finally came back to the United States and took them back, even though this guy did drugs he provided for the little girl and her sisters. They had their own separate room they had food in their refrigerator he made sure they did their homework and were always at school, but somehow when this lady came back to the United States she regained custody the of girls. The little girls mother is a horrible person, she has done things to these kids that are sadistic it's scary, but for some stupid reason child protective services always gives this lady back these kids. At this moment my wives father is taking care of the little girl, but it's not the best situation either, recently the little girl has been staying the weekend with my wife and I, we are not rich and all but we have a good apartment and can probably provide for her better then my wife's father or the little girl's mother and also provide the little girl a safe place to go home. So what I want to know is what can I do to make sure that if we were to somehow adopt this little girl that her mother would not just be able to get out of jail and come pick up your little girl, and ruin her life, and a matter of fact what can be done to make sure her mother stays thousands of miles aways from her.

When I need eye bleach, I visit Life Pro Tips confession

[Light]: I'm using a throwaway for this confession. Not because it's particularly egregious but because I'm not a very effective Redditor IRL and I want to protect my precious internet points. This confession is light (maybe even a little silly) but it has the potential to piss a lot of people off. Hence the throwaway.

So yeah, it's what the title says. I'm only subscribed to Life Pro Tips because I get a kick out of the naivety of a lot of its posts. Obviously there are some very useful tips, some I've actually taken to heart and put to use in my own life. But there are some really silly ones, too, and I think it's cute that these people put so much thought into such a silly idea, then post it online with the serious intent of helping others.

More than once in the last month I've let go of an audible “aww” when reading the posts. One in particular was a tip advising others to take a picture of their stove and outlets, as well as their own locked doors, prior to leaving on a long trip. Another one that sticks out for me is a post telling people to leave their employer on good terms only. Reaching into the past, I still gush when I remember a post telling people to take a picture of the inside of their refrigerator before going shopping.

In between those examples, there are so many other posts that just make me smile. I think there's a charming quality to these posts, almost like watching a group of children waking up to the logic behind looking both ways before they cross the road, then running out the door to excitedly share this new found wisdom with others.

TL;DR: Who needs a subreddit for eyebleach when there's one for Life Pro Tips?

Norman eats fast food lifeofnorman

"Phone, wallet, keys...yup."

Norman left his house focused on his day. Work should be normal. Traffic should suck. Kathy will ignore me. All will be right with the world.

Around nine, Norman walks to the break room to have a mid-morning snack - an extra banana he packed for his lunch. Eating healthy is the way to happiness, maybe, he thought.

Norman pushed aside Jeff's brown bag and Ashley's diet cola - an autonomous action that felt somewhat foreign for some reason - and then, right in the back of the fridge and all the way to the left, his lunch should be. Or to the right? Where is it?

Did somebody take it? Jeff maybe? Or Ashley? Kathy? Norman's heart fluttered. Is this Kathy's way of asking me to lunch? No, that's just - just...

Then he saw it.

He saw it's doors flap open and shut and could see the light flickering on and off, could hear the grinding of metal and plastic - it's laughing at me, he thought.

And I can see it. Dammit, there it is! Right behind the refrigerator's magnet-ridden flapping maw, my lunch.

"I can't believe it," said Norman out loud, all of a sudden thankful the break room was empty.

Two days in a row.

[23M4F] Helping Hands dirtypenpals

A whole lot of good luck came showering down on my mom in one week, and some of it splattered onto me as well, making me feel very lucky and very happy. She went to work one Monday morning and by mid-afternoon she had in her possession a letter promoting her to a managerial position with a considerable hike in pay. Two days later one year's retroactive pay of sixty percent was paid out to workers of her company following a two year dispute between the company and the representing union which was eventually taken to arbitration.

The next day mom promptly replaced our old refrigerator and her shaky bed which had a mattress with a number of broken springs. It was an old bed which she and my dad had shared for years, bought before I was even born. Dad had moved away three years ago to live with a much younger co-worker. The Friday of that lucky week was her birthday and the items were delivered that very afternoon.

I was at home, having just completed high school. After putting the new fridge in place I dismantled the old bed, took it out the room and was in the process of setting up the new one when mom came home about two hours later than usual. It was obvious that she was a little tipsy. She hardly ever drank, and was very light headed; it didn't take much to get her drunk. I was glad when she arrived; because I found out that I needed another pair of helping hands to get the bed assembled. Mom said that she had been taken for a birthday drink by her co-workers. She said that as soon as she took a shower she would help me complete the setting up.

Down the rabbit hole and other cliches. offmychest

Do you ever feel like you aren't good enough? Like you haven't achieved enough? That your car isn't new enough, where you live isn't big enough? Have you ever looked around you, at your peers and family and wondered; how the hell am I such a failure?

We all do. Yep. All of us. The guy in the condo the size of a refrigerator box who drives that 3 wheeled car from Mr. Bean has the same thoughts as the guy in a 2017 self-driving robocar, living in a mansion “It isn't good enough”. “I need more”. “I'd be happier with more x,y,z”

And then you die.

And you spent your entire life wanting. Wanting. Wanting a bigger this, or a shinier that, or a more expensive thing. Never realizing it doesn't really matter. We're just a blip in time, a nothing of a nothing inside a nothing. A grain of sand in an infinite beach. Live now. Stop chasing money. Stop chasing materialism, live for today. Life is the envy of the dead.

“Do not lose time on daily trivialities. Do not dwell on petty detail. For all of these things melt away and drift apart within the obscure traffic of time. Live well and live broadly. You are alive and living now. Now is the envy of all of the dead. “

[College Physics] Refrigerator (Heat-Engines) HomeworkHelp

A refrigerator uses 100 W of power to remove 100 kJ of heat per minute from the 2 degrees celsius interor. According to the makers of the refrigerator, this claim is true in a 22 degrees celsius kitchen. Should one buy this refrigerator?

I know Qh=Qc+W(in). Also, the 100 W = 100 J/s but I don't know where to go from here. I don't know where to include power in refrigerator problems.

Banana peel tea? gardening

I am making the tea from the mostly-yellow banana peel. In my slow cooker there is stuff burned on the bottom so that is currently soaking in the vinegar, nor am I allowed to wash it now. So is it okay to cold-brew banana peel tea, or to heat up the vinegar and will that prevent the burned stuff from coming off and not put a vinegar flavor in the tea? And do I have to put the jars in the refrigerator if it is cold brew or can I leave them in the room?

Bernoulli's Principle and Joule-Thompson expansion contradiction? AskEngineers

Although it arises from a great simplification of the Navier-Stokes equations, Bernoulli's principle results in fluid travelling faster having lower pressure. Thus, points in a fluid's pipe with greater cross-sectional area experience higher pressure. In the case of say, a refrigerator, the fluid undergoes J-T expansion, which causes it to cool. However, this takes place in a part of the fluid's flow with a larger cross sectional area, meaning there should be higher pressure, not lower pressure (?). How is this done such that it doesn't exactly contradict Bernoulli's principle? Or are more terms of Navier-Stokes required in this case?

seconds nosleep

4:38:03 PM

He placed the cold steel barrel to his temple, feeling it press against bone. The scarred right wrist was steady, the shoulder relaxed, as he’d been trained. Standing in front of the mirror, his dry brown eyes burned with concentration. The muscles of his right hand contracted. The trigger began to move. His cracked lips curled to one side. The same sly, crooked half smile so many girls and women found appealing.

A muffled thump startled him from his sleep. Rubbing his eyes, the boy slipped from his bed and wandered into his parent’s bedroom. His father lay on the floor clutching at his chest. Sweat beaded his strained forehead. The man looked up at his young son.

“Get your mother,” he moaned through contorted gasps for breath. “Hurry…”

The boy stood there in his cotton pajamas smiling affectionately at his father. At last he turned and started down the hallway. Pausing on the carpeted stairs, he returned to his room and flicked the light switch.

“Daddy gets mad when I leave the lights on,” he reminded himself.

He made his way through the living and dining rooms of the modern split level home. In the kitchen the boy stopped to look in the refrigerator but changed his mind. Silently he padded down the six steps to the paneled den.

His mother looked up from her reading. “What are you doing out of bed?”

“I couldn’t sleep.”

“You should be in bed… it’s late.”

The black and white TV set flickered. Two men faced each other in the middle of a dusty street. Spitting tobacco into the dirt, one man made a sudden move with his hand. The other, wearing a white hat and a silver start shaped badge, deftly slipped the Colt Peacemaker from its leather holster, thumbing back the hammer. In one swift, lethal motion he pointed the pearl handled revolver and pulled the trigger. Twenty paces away the first man jerked back a step. This time he spat blood, then fell forward.

The boy smiled.

“Did you hear me?”

“Daddy said he needs you.”

“What does he want?”

Still smiling, the boy looked up from the TV to his mother. “I don’t know.”

When his mother reached the bedroom it was too late.

That was the first time he killed.

4:38:04 PM

A warm shaft of sunlight filtered in through the open window. It was accompanied by a cool breeze. It smelled of honeysuckle. He squeezed the trigger tighter, feeling the tension on his index finger.

“Bang, bang!”

“You missed me, stupid.”

“I did not, you’re dead!”

The ten year old pointed his index finger at his friend. He cocked his thumb back. “You couldn’t shoot straight if your life depended on it, Chris.”

The one named Chris laughed aloud then took off running across the spacious back yard.

“Bang, bang!”

His friend took off after him.

The two boys chased each other through the swing set, around the plastic above ground pool, over a metal jungle jim. Still laughing, Chris scrambled up a tall old oak tree, followed closely by the other boy.

Fifteen feet up, Chris spun around and shimmied backwards, onto a long, sturdy branch.

“You can’t kill me,” he taunted.

The other boy watched his friend move further away. Chris’ right ankle came to rest inches beneath an electrical power line.

“Don’t move!”

Chris froze in place, “Why not?”

A warm shaft of sunlight filtered through the leaves. It was accompanied by a cool breeze. It smelled of honeysuckle.

A crooked half smile crept across the boy’s face, “Because… there’s a snake crawling up your right leg.”

Chris jumped.

The arc of white light blinded the ten year old momentarily. When his vision returned, he saw Chris’ face twisted in pain. The mouth was frozen open in a silent scream.

The acrid scent of ozone filled his lungs. He thought it smelled like burnt chocolate.

4:38:05 PM

He was fixated on the image in the mirror. The odd juxtaposition of chrome and flesh fascinated him. Intently staring at the reflection caused his eyes to begin to water. A single drop rolled down his cheek, landing on his bare chest.

The cold, unexpected drops of water brought chill bumps to his tanned skin. Startled, the teen jumped from the blanket which lay sprawled under a friendly shade tree.

“Why you…”

Jenny giggled and side stepped his lumbering grasp. She continued to laugh at the prank, her young, firm breasts straining the material of her two piece swim suit. This time he managed to get a muscular arm around her tiny waist.

“What am I gonna do with you?” he said, pulling her close.

“That’s what you get for falling asleep on me. I thought we came out here for some fun.”

Sun bleached locks trailed down her back like fine Spanish moss. He ran his fingers through them. He loved the way she felt in his arms. “So… fun is what you want, huh? Ok…”

Pushing at his taut stomach, she laughed again and broke free of his embrace. “Not your kind of fun,” she teased.

He watched as she ran to the edge of the lake. Pausing only long enough to turn and stick her tongue out at him, she splashed a few steps into the water, then jumped and dove in head first.

The teen waited. Seconds passed. Where was she?

The surface of the water erupted. A tangle of arms and screams and matted blonde hair shattered the tranquil summer day.

Something was wrong.

Jenny continued to flail about. He saw her slip beneath the surface. She popped up again, her mouth and eyes wide.

He was a strong swimmer.

He didn’t move.

Fifty feet away Jenny continued to struggle. She repeatedly sank and surfaced. Panic flashed in her pretty blue eyes.

She is beautiful, he thought.

Again she sank. A single hand clutched at the air. Each time she remained under longer.

As he watched, she came up again. Jenny’s expression was pained and puzzled. Her mouth opened for oxygen. Or to scream, he wondered which.

At last she disappeared, the cold beryl water folding over her like a shroud.

4:38:06 PM

A fly buzzed his vision. It distracted him. His grip relaxed. Cursing, he drew a deep breath, releasing it slowly…

… slowly.

He adjusted his hold on the pistol and began to move his finger again.

The flies were almost unbearable. A small squad of men shuffled restlessly in the hip deep swamp. They swiped at the pests, trying to remain as quiet as possible, all except for their leader. The stoic sergeant seemed immune to the insects that buzzed about his face. His eyes were fixed on a path which ran out of a nearby clearing and skirted the swamp.

He didn’t want to be drafted. He was having too much fun playing college ball, drinking beer and barely passing his courses. But then his grades sank even lower from too many parties and too few attended classes. He lost his deferment and his number came up.

During basic, he surprised himself at how readily he took to weapons and hand to hand training.

On the path something moved in the half moonlight. He raised an arm. His men quieted and settled. A line of Viet Cong snaked out of the clearing towards his position. His squad was to remain hidden until the enemy passed. Two squads were deployed up ahead. They would ambush the VC from either side of the trail. His orders were to wait. They’d attack only if the enemy began to fall back.

He hated his orders.

The black clad Viet Cong slinked past. Each carried a deadly Russian made automatic weapon. A large spotted fly landed on the sergeant’s cheek. This time he swatted at it viciously.

The sound of the slap broke the evening. Two dozen VC turned weapons at the ready. The sergeant gave a loud shout and opened fire. Then all hell broke loose.

Startled, the two squads rushed down the trail. By the time they arrived the fighting was fierce; often man to man. In the end only two of the enemy remained alive. The young sergeant counted nine confirmed kills of his own. But the combined US and ARVN forces suffered heavy losses.

With the area secure, the sergeant marched the two bound prisoners deep into the jungle. Twenty minutes later he returned.

Alone.

In Saigon he received a promotion and a bronze star for the valuable information on enemy installations he gleaned from the captured soldiers.

4:38:07 PM

He squinted his eyes to clear them. He watched as the hammer crept further back. The stiff mechanism squeaked in his ear.

The squeaking continued.

It came from the rear of the comfortable single story ranch house. Returning home early from his job at the tractor supply store, he stood in the entry way listening.

He knew that sound.

He smiled. A sly, crooked half smile.

Retrieving the Winchester from the coat closet, he made his way silently down the hall. The squeaking grew louder. It was now accompanied by muffled laughter. It came from the master bedroom.

He kicked savagely.

Two naked bodies twisted in the pale light as the locked door flew off its hinges. A dark haired man rolled off the bed, landing clumsily on the floor.

“No!” the woman screamed as the rifle was leveled.

Two shots split the early afternoon.

After his wife’s tearful testimony, a Texas grand jury refused to bring charges.

Two months later they divorced.

4:38:08 PM

His tightening hand began to tremble from the tension. The hammer continued to retreat. The cylinder started to rotate. Hi licked his parched lips. They tasted of salt.

The salt rimmed, oversized shot glass left a ring. He threw back his head, draining the Adobe Gold tequila; bit into a wedge of lime, then turned the spent glass upside down. It and fourteen others formed a perfect glass pyramid on the bar.

Almost falling, he staggered off the stool and through the flapping half doors of the tiny border town cantina. Fumbling with his keys, he managed to start the old brown pick-up. Dust and gravel spat from the rear tires as he barreled out onto the narrow two-lane. Three miles later he was doing sixty. The truck swerved and lurched, weaving across the center line.

At the top of a rise it met a sedan head on.

The force of the impact knocked both doors open. He flew from the truck to the soft grass shoulder. The vehicles, locked together, skidded sideways. They violently flipped, rolling several times, before coming to rest in a ditch.

Dragging his bruised body up, he watched the wreck explode in flames. The vacationing

family of five never had a chance.

4:38:09 PM

The last of his breath escaped through clenched teeth. He blinked as the hammer snapped into position.

Click!

He stood motionless, sweating, the gun still pressed to his head. He looked down. The clinched left fist opened, revealing six .38 caliber bullets.

His lips curled to one side. The same sly, crooked half smile. Slowly he raised his hand and began to laugh.

And Still It Follows... nosleep

I remember when I was younger my grandmother was involved in a horrible accident. A driver had lost control of his vehicle during an afternoon commute and drove head-on into my grandmother’s car as she was returning from a shopping trip. The man died, crushed by the violence of the impact. My grandmother, on the other hand, walked away without a crash. After this she would always attribute it to having an “angel watching over her.” I certainly believe I have something watching over me as well, though I don’t believe it can be called an angel. It is a being of jealousy and lust, watching my every move, never wanting to leave my side. I grew up in a quiet town in the Midwest. My father owned his own automotive repair shop, while my mother volunteered her mornings at the town’s animal shelter. I was the only child, a quiet child with a great love of reading. We had a nice life, living neither richly nor poorly. When I was about ten years old I brought home a friend for the first time. Daniel and I had taken to hanging out together at recess. He loved comic books, always talking about whichever issue he had bought that week. We both loved to race through the woods behind the school, and made these magnificent fortresses out of sticks and logs. We would hole up in these constructions of ours, pretending to fight off alien invaders, monsters, or whatever else happened to interest us that day. I had invited Daniel to come to my house after school that Friday, to see this giant cardboard box - my parents had just bought a new refrigerator - that I had converted into a flying fortress. We spent all evening playing. By the time my mother called us in for dinner we were completely worn out and ready to sit down in front of my family's television to watch a movie. It was what we considered to be a great ending to a great day. Daniel had asked to see my room before he left. Eager to show off my collection of books and knick-knacks I had collected over the years, I led him down to our basement. It was creepy to go down the bare wooden steps leading from our living room to the hallway outside my bedroom, but it was well-lit and of course nothing could get us as long as we stayed in the light. After a few minutes we heard my mother great Daniel’s upstairs. We left my room and began to walk back up to the living room to say hello. Just at the bottom of the staircase is my bathroom; Daniel noticed it and excused himself for a moment. As he shut the door I decided to continue up the stairs on my own. My feet had just left the cold wood of the final step and moved to the living room’s soft carpet when I heard Daniel leave the bathroom. Out of habit I shut the basement stairs’ door and turned to say hello to my mother. Before I could even open my mouth to form the words the air was torn by a shriek from somewhere below our feet. Our mothers appeared to freeze. I could feel my eyes open wide. I had no idea what had just occured, but I recognized Daniel’s scream. My mother rushed passes me and threw open the door to the basement. She had started to call Daniel’s name, but her panicked voice caught in her throat and her face went white, like she had just seen a ghost. Curiosity overcame my fear and I moved to peek around her. The stairway was dark, but enough light spilled into it through the door to the living room that we were able to make out a grisly spectacle. There was blood everywhere, much more than I ever thought a human body could have held. It coated the floor walls, and even the ceiling. It was as if a wave of crimson ink had dashed itself against the steps, leaving only a splattered red stain. There was no sign of Daniel. The police never found a body. They never found anything aside from the blood, which pervaded my nightmares for years to come. When my father returned from working late at his shop he found the officers and paramedics trying to comfort my mother and I while we sobbed on our porch. Daniels mother stood in our yard, completely hysterical. Eventually I remember she tried to force her way past the officers outside, trying to get back in our house and screaming about how they weren’t looking hard enough for her son. She was forcibly removed from the property. The stress and shock from the incident took a toll on our family. My father spent more and more time at the shop, while my mother began visiting her sister nearly every day. Eventually she left my father and I to fend for ourselves. I presume that whatever killed Daniel had done so out of jealousy, after seeing how much fun we had been having together. I had left him alone in the basement for just a moment, and it had taken advantage of the moment to remove what it viewed as competition for my affection. This thing, this monster, must have possessed enough intelligence to realize it would be futile to remove my parents. They were my caretakers. Killing them would only result in me being placed in some other’s home. About a year after this first incident I got into an argument with my father. He’d lost his shop after a competitor sabotaged his equipment, and I had been mouthing off for no other reason than to annoy him. It’s no excuse for slapping your eleven-year-old son, but I understand why he did it. I didn’t cry, I just stayed silent for a moment before telling him I was going to play outside. When I came back in an hour later no trace of my father was left, only the same massive crimson splatter, drenching everything in his bedroom. Later I told the police I had heard nothing outside, and didn’t see anyone coming or going. They noted that it was the exact same method as how Daniel had been killed. It was as if my father had been inflated, like a balloon, until he bursts, and then all skin, bones, and organs removed. All that remained was the blood. My mother was unwilling to take me, and so I was placed in the care of my father’s mother, who lived several hours away from my hometown. My grandmother was a very caring woman. She enjoyed being kind to others for no other reason than to see them smile. She was very gracious towards me, and welcomed me into her home with open arms. It was a very sorrowful time when she passed away years later. From the time I was eleven until I turned eighteen there were no other incidents of violence. I kept to myself at school, never talking or attempting to make friends. I was haunted by the memory of Daniel’s blood dripping from the ceiling of my staircase, and form the crimson staining my father’s bed. The summer of my eighteenth year, just after completing high school, I met Allison. She had taken an interest in me during the last few months of our schooling, and seemed determined to get me to talk to her. At first I actively avoided her, but I soon came to look forward to her attempts to converse with me. I started greeting her in return, and not going out of my way to avoid her. In fact, I started looking for excuses to cross her path. After graduating I invited her to see a film with me. To my excitement, she agreed. We had a wonderful night, even though I remember thinking the movie was very disappointing. She had driven, as I still couldn’t afford a car. When we pulled into the driveway of my grandmother’s house, I remember smiling for the first time in years as I told her what a great time I had had. She returned the smile and said she would love to do it again. I agreed and, still grinning like a fool, stepped out of her car and walked to the front door. I remember turning to watch her pull out of the driveway. She gave me a little wave before pulling away. It would be the last time I ever saw her. The next day the entire town was in a state of shock. Like my hometown, it was small, and news traveled quickly. Allison had stopped at a gas station after dropping me off, to refill her gas tank. She had stepped into the convenience store while the pump ran and purchased a pack of gum and pay for her fuel. The owner had sold it to her, and then stepped into the back to finish some paperwork. Roughly thirty minutes later he returned to close the station for the night and noticed her car still sitting in front of the pump. Curious, he had approached and found the interior empty, save for a thick coating of blood covering the upholstery. I can only hope that this beast caused no undue pain to those it killed. I don’t know why it has found such an obsession with me, and I don’t know how I can make it go away. I feel responsible for the deaths of Daniel and Allison, and for my father. Naturally the police questioned me; it seemed odd that I had been involved with three killings, all executed the same way. The security footage from the gas station showed nothing. Allison gets into her car, there’s a brief flash of movement and then nothing more. Eventually the case was dropped. It was impossible for me to have committed the crimes as a child, and the security footage and my grandmother's testimony showed I was nowhere near Allison at the time of her death. I feel convicted to get this off of my chest. I know no one would believe me if I brought the story to them. Certainly the police would never listen. It’s relieving however, to be able to confess this to someone. I don’t know what’s following me, and I don't know if it will ever stop. Perhaps I’ll wind up as nothing more than a red stain on the wall, like the others. I recall that, when I was young, I would flip the light switch at the bottom of my basement staircase and then race to the top as quickly as I could, imagining a great horror behind me. It was my childish imagination at the time, or so I thought. Perhaps though, that feeling of being watched, of a clawed hand reaching out for me just as I jumped the last step into the living room, contained a small bit of truth.

Can you store a FTE in the refrigerator? AsianBeauty

I know a lot of people store their skincare in the fridge, especially in the summer, but I was wondering if storing a galactomyces product in low temperature would affect it negatively. I think most manufacturer's recommendations are to store products in room temperature but I would like to break the rules if I can...although my fridge does get ridiculously cold sometimes...I sometimes find frost on certain items!

What's the consensus on William "The Refrigerator' Perry? nfl

I just finished watching the 30 for 30 on the '85 Bears - which was fantastic, check it out!

I was born in 1988 so I was much too young to watch any of his career, but I'm surprised to find in my new research how little accolades he received. Despite not being old enough to watch him I'm WELL aware of who he is from pure name-value. I hate to admit, but after watching that documentary it seemed like he was just a serviceable defensive lineman on an amazing defensive unit. Am I wrong? It's well noted that Buddy Ryan didn't want to draft him and Ditka didn't care. Ryan went so far as to say it was a "wasted pick," and only played him at his actual position later on.

Was he just a gimmick player who was hilarious, albeit at least somewhat effective, to watch barreling into the endzone? Ditka seemed to want to do that mostly out of revenge to the 49ers. Or was he actually a good defensive player?

I'm especially curious to hear from Bears fans who were alive to watch him.

All that said he seems like a really fun guy from the interviews!

Shelf Life of 1.5 after mixing soylent

I did a subreddit search for the shelf life of 1.5 and nothing came up in reference to the shelf life of 1.5 after mixing.

I'm considering switching from 2.0 to 1.5 because it's more economical for me to use, and also since I will be moving abroad soon, I can order a huge supply and it'll be easy to travel with/ship to in comparison to the bottles. But since I only consume 2.0 maybe once or twice a day, if I was to mix the whole bag at once -- how long CAN it last in the refrigerator before it gets... well... nasty?

I want to avoid having to break out the blender/mix every meal. I just want to have a pre-made batch ready to go for me to consume whenever.

Also, I first popped my soylent cherry with 2.0, how drastic is the flavor/texture difference to 1.5? I haven't been able to find many good 1.5 vs 2.0 posts here; just a lot of 1.5 is flat out horrible to switch to if one has been on 2.0 for a while.

Thanks

Edit: I need to use Google more often.

Beast of Bruneau libraryofshadows

There is a widely held belief that with age comes wisdom, and it is true, for the most part; but sometimes gained wisdom is hard fought. Sometimes wisdom leaves you scared, hopeless; wishing you could take it all back, to regain an ignorance that’s been lost to antiquity.

There are times when the space between this world and the next begins to thin, to weaken in the middle and fray at the edges. In these times, any number of things may temporarily make their way into our plane of existence. Usually the door is too small, too fragile to allow anything through for more than a few seconds, but the rarest of instances, something else happens.

In the fall of 1969, I experienced one of those rare happenings first hand.

Shortly after graduating from the University with a bachelor’s in business management, I was recruited by Kurt Leibowitz, head of sales and marketing for a small startup company. The business plan was to try to gain a footing in the emerging holdings markets. My first task, was to scout a few potential bases of operation that Kurt thought might be undervalued.

The list of likely sites he gave me seemed odd, out of place for a holdings company, buying and selling other small businesses. A suspicion lurked in the back of my mind that my employer may be looking doing something underhanded on the side. I eased my apprehension by reminding myself that this was a time of crippling taxes on high earners, there were bound to be schemes and plots to hide money.

I couldn’t blame them for that. After all, I had hidden more money than I needed, and only worked to keep up pretenses. Still, my curiosity stood unabated, trying to understand my real purpose for going to these places. The plane landed in Boise Idaho in the early afternoon, and within an hour my rental car set south to investigate the first location on the list.

An hour out of town and after a dozen too many dirt roads, I passed an old wooden sign welcoming me to Bruneau. Under the sign hung three smaller blocks, etched with a 1 and two 0’s; the third zero having slid almost off of the hook. It dangled perilously, like an unsure jumper from the window of a high rise building.

“What could the boss be looking for here?” I asked myself as I continued further into the small village. I’d already memorized the directions, but decided to look at them once more for good measure. “Fourth house on the left, across from the church.” I’d already passed two bungalows, so I looked out to see past the third, to my destination.

An old man, with a wild unkempt white beard stood in the dirt driveway in front of the property I was looking for. As I slowed my car to a stop, he stared solemnly at me, his eyes unwavering. When I stepped out of the car, my nose was assaulted by the smell of fresh manure of local livestock. “Hi, my name’s Miller, Hank Miller.” I said with a grin, reminding myself to breathe through my mouth. “You must be Stanley Shoemaker.” He stood in silence as I walked over and held out my hand. “Pleasure to meet you.”

The old man nodded his head and slid his thumbs up into the front of his jean overalls. He spit a wad of black chew out onto the dust and dirt and turned back toward the old house. “Follow me then.” He beckoned, his voice raspy, high pitched and wet. “We can talk in the house.”

The shack was clearly distressed, the paint having been beaten off by countless winters. The bare wood then exposed to the sun’s damaging light. Small bits in the shade of the front porch showed that the exterior at some point had been some shade of blue. Though that could have been my mind seeking out the light, unwilling to give in to the fact that someone would allow their home to fall into such disrepair.

I noticed a visible sagging in the roof before following Mr. Shoemaker inside. At the threshold I noticed that the inside had no lights. Instead, the walls held their original candle sconces of ornate and gaudy brass. “You’ve no lights in your home?” I asked, careful to sound curious and not condescending.

The old man turned, looked outside one of the window to the empty street. “Don’t need ‘em. Got all the light I needs during the day. Night comes and I light the candles ‘til bed.” He turned back toward the living room and slowly bent down to sit on a couch that lost its springs years ago. “I don’t trust ‘em.” He said with a wheeze of breath, leaning forward to grab a can of chew from the coffee table in the middle.

“But you have power lines coming to the house.” I remarked. Then sat down on an unpadded rocking chair across from him.

He smiled, exposing the fresh tobacco under his bottom lip, filling the air with his putrid breath. “Yessir, that’s for the refrigerator. Got it a couple of years ago. Figured if they want to bring electricity all this way, it might as well keep my beer cold for me.” Laughter erupted from him like a geyser, sending little bits of saliva soaked spittle to land on my suit.

Temporarily I lost focus on why I was there, and considered walking out on him. A deep inhale calmed my nerves enough to continue our conversation. “We can keep this brief if you’d like, Mr. Shoemaker.” I studied his response, but found only an old man staring back at me.

“You want my property.” He said plainly. “You want all of our property.” He nodded, his eyes still stuck on mine. “You even want that church.”

“Let’s keep this to your property, sir. We’re prepared to offer you fair market value. You’d be able to secure a new home easily. Reloc-”

“Fair warning you, boy. Y’aint gon’ find no oil here. We already been prospected.” He shook his head, as though remembering hope for his town had died long ago. “No gold, neither.”

“I’m not in the oil business, sir.”

“What are ya gon’ do with the cemetery?” His eyes showed genuine concern. “Lotta good folks buried out there.” For the first time since sitting down, the old man took his eyes off of mine. He turned his gaze around toward the far window, toward the church.

I hadn’t considered the cemetery as a topic for preparation of our meeting. A sudden guilt overwhelmed me, a deep regret for having come here at all. Mr. Shoemaker was lost in his own thoughts, staring at the old church building as I rose from the rickety rocking chair. “I’m sorry to have bothered you.”

I sat in my car, thinking about how I could explain to my employers why I’d come back empty handed, when I heard a tapping on the window. Startled, I looked out to see a young woman, auburn hair pulled back in a ponytail, pale dotted freckles and a pointed nose framing a sincere grin.

My hand grasped the window handle to quickly bring it down. “You must be Hank. I hope grandpa Stan didn’t scare you off.” She offered a hand through the open window for me to shake. I felt the callouses of manual labor and the firm grip of a woman trained to keep up with her brothers on the farm. “Oh how rude of me. I’m Patricia, but everyone calls me Patty.”

“Glad to meet you, Patty.” I nodded and let go of her hand. “Now if you’ll excuse me. I have a flight to catch and I’m sure to get lost several times trying to make my way back to Boise.”

“Oh that’s nonsense. You haven’t even had supper yet.” Her eyes showed a genuine concern. “Why don’t I give you a tour of the town, then we can all have a nice meal and go over your company’s plans.”

The tour didn’t take very long, and soon Patty and I stood in front of the church. The building had no steeple, but on top of the front entrance stood a large, covered bell. It was clear from my tour that the church was the only thing in the town that hadn’t fallen into disrepair. It’s wood siding had a fresh coat of white paint, and the shrubs out front seemed well managed. She directed me to a metal bench that ran along the path from the door to the street.

I sat down on the sturdy white bench first and waited for my guide to sit as well. “This place, it means alot to you all.”

“The church?” She asked coyly, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear.

“It’s the only thing aside from the farm equipment that doesn’t seem to be falling apart.”

She looked down at her shadow, folding her arms. I instantly knew I’d touched a nerve. “After the fire, it’s the only thing that brought our neighborhood back together.” I began to notice the time, seeing her shadow growing on the pavement. “We’d all probably have moved away from eachother long ago if it hadn’t been for our pastor. He united us when we were all at each other's throats.”

“That doesn’t seem right.” I said bluntly. “Shouldn’t a traumatic experience bring you closer together?”

“Not if no one can decide what really happened.” Her hazel eyes darted for a moment, like the words she was searching for were scattered on the lawn. Without warning she stood and began walking slowly toward the side of the chapel. I followed, sensing she was leading me somewhere important.

“What do they say happened?” I asked.

“Some folk say it was some kind of wiccan ritual gone wrong, that they unleashed a monster into our world.” We meandered behind the small chapel, into an open field of overgrown grass. “Others say it was a town hall meeting and a careless cigarette that didn’t get put out.” She kicked the grass with her boot, and added. “Three dead. My momma, grandma… Sharon, my cousin, she was the youngest, only twenty…

“I’m so sorry for your loss.”

Patty stopped momentarily, and looked up at the setting sun on the horizon. “I was young, too little to understand what they were up to that night.”

“When did it happen?”

“Fifteen years ago, if I recall correctly. I was four or five at the time, so I don’t really remember it that well. Only the stories people told when they thought I wasn’t listening. When they thought I’d gone to bed.”

We’d walked a ways into the field when my foot had landed on something hard, like rock, but flat. I looked down and saw a depressed gravestone under my foot, the name decayed with age. I hadn’t realized until then that I was in the middle of the cemetery Stanley had told me about. The sun was going down, but I was filled with questions. “What does your grandpa think happened?”

“He’s more conflicted than the rest, really hasn’t been the same since. Sometimes I think he tries to carry the burden of what happened solely on his shoulders.”

“Conflicted?”

“Yeah. See, one the one hand he doesn’t want to believe that his wife and daughter were into witchcraft. That goes against everything a good protestant believes in.”

“I can imagine.”

“On the other hand, I’ve heard him talk about that night a couple of times. When he’s been good and liquored up, he’ll talk more freely. He talks about the long arms of a serpent, the eyes like a hole, sucking in the light. The great horn on its head.” She paused for a moment, overwhelmed by the story.

“It’s okay to stop.” I assured her.

“I’ll be okay, but thank you.” She looked back toward the church, as though she was trying to coax something from it. A piece of the past that now only stood as fragments in her mind’s eye. “There isn’t much written down on the subject. What was, was gathered up and left in the basement of the church, waiting for the stories to die. That’s where I got most of my information from, since everyone’s been so tight lipped about it.”

“What do you think really happened that night?”

“You’ll think I’m crazy.”

I shook my head, straining to see her in the under the light of the half moon. “Please.”

“It was a typical thursday night for most of the town, ma and pa had just served me dinner, when she abruptly got up and excused herself from the table. Pa went after her and they talked in the hall for a bit. I remember her saying something about having to go, then she gave him a peck on the cheek and gathered her winter jacket. I glimpsed out the window grandma and a couple of other women in the front yard waiting for her. I watched them turn and head down the road before pa pulled the blinds closed.”

“So that’s all you know?”

“The other parts I’ve pieced together over the years. The group went north, to the Jenkins barn and performed an ancient ritual. Grandpa...” Patty took a deep breath, as though she hoped the inhale may tell her story for her. “Stan had followed the group, worried about what they were up to. He stayed outside the barn, trying to listen in on them. He listened through the old barn door until someone inside mention a ritual, then he decided he’d heard enough. He flung his cigarette and burst through the door.”

Trying to piece the story together for myself, I asked. “They were summoning the ‘beast’?”

“No! They were trying to close the portal, once and for all.”

“I don’t understand.” I admitted.

“You see, Bruneau is one of a few places on Earth where the barrier between our world and the others is weakest. Apparitions, or ghosts are commonplace here, have been for generations. Momma June and the others were trying to close it off because they knew it was reaching a breaking point. A time when something could get through and stay.

“The beast had been showing up from time to time for years. A few dead goats or pigs here and there, scaring the dogs. It would show up for a few minutes, and then disappear back wherever it came from. The Beast of Bruneau, we called it. When I was young, I thought it was just a scary story my friends told to keep me up at night.

“But that night, after pa had sent me to bed, I was looking out for ma to come home and I saw it from the window. A giant thing, almost see through. I could feel its hate even from the safety of my bed, walking slowly up the road to Jenkins farm.”

“So your mother and grandma, they were trying to close the portal to stop it once and for all?”

“Yes. Then Grandpa showed up, accusing them of all being witches. He was irate, saying how he was going to tell the pastor, and have the demons exorcised from them. At first they tried explaining what they were doing, but he wasn’t having any of it.

“I once overheard him telling pastor that he even accused them of making the whole beast of Bruneau thing up to hide their sacrifices to the devil. They all got so caught up in accusing each other or defending themselves that they didn’t even notice that the old wood was beginning to singe. Smouldering in the brush from a long summer's dry spell, a gust of wind finally gave breath to the fire.

“I can only imagine what a nightmare it must’ve been for them. Trying to tell your husband, father that you’re trying to protect the township. To have him staring into your eyes, with the rage of betrayal. Only to notice that faint but unmistakable aroma, the musky scent of a burning ponderosa pine.

“Grandma must have realized the smell wasn’t from a neighbor's fireplace first. She must have been the one to grab papa by the arm, shaking him back to reality. ‘The barn’s on fire!’ I can almost hear the panic in her voice.

“Momma June ran for the door, but standing in the way was the beast of Bruneau. Taller than the entrance, she screamed in fear as it bent down. Snarling, it wrapped its slithering arms around her before she could run. Papa watched it take his daughter and charged after, but it was too late. There were only pieces of her left scattered along the outside.” Patricia couldn’t stop herself from crying any longer and fell to the ground. Her hands outstretched on a flush gravestone.

I bent down, circling my hand on her back for a little comfort. The headstone read ‘HERE LIES JUNE SHOEMAKER - FRIEND, MOTHER, WIFE.

“The official report is that momma was too close to a propane tank when it exploded. But I know it was the beast. The others were found in the corner, huddled under the collapsed roof. They died in the fire, too afraid of the beast to follow her out the door.”

I exhaled heavily, barely aware that I’d been holding my breath. My mouth only began to mouth the words ‘I’m sorry,’ when another voice came from behind us.

“What in the hell are you two doing out here?” Came the voice of Stanley. His old white beard, gray in the moonlight. “We don’t come here at night, Patty. You know that!”

“He had to see, papa. He had to know why we can’t sell this place.”

“Get on up, now. Ya hear? We’ve got to go, you don’t know what kind of animal might come out on a night like this!”

Patty nodded her head, and I helped her back to her feet. “I’m sorry, Mr. Shoemaker. Let’s get back home where you’ll all be safe.”

Before we rounded the corner of the church, we heard a rustling behind us, then a brilliant blue light sent our shadows onto the chapel wall. Every dog in the neighborhood began howling in unison, feeling the same static charge we did. Slowly I turned, and saw a large white and blue circle just beyond where we’d been kneeling seconds ago. “What is that?” I asked.

Two figures stepped out, glowing and pulsating red, green and blue. Bits of pure light shot out from the circle behind them like fire crackers, hissing and falling back to the ground. “Momma?” Patricia asked, her voice hoarse from crying.

Mr Shoemaker turned to us and said, “stay here.”

Patty tried to follow, but I pulled her back. “Your grandpa told us to stay here. I think he’s right.”

We watched as Stanley stepped closer to the figures, his arm out to hide his eyes from the intensity of the light. When he made it to them, he fell to his knees, silently sobbing. The two figures bent down and picked him up back to his feet. They embraced for what felt like years, wrapped up in an instant.

He turned back toward us, as though to say goodbye. I couldn’t see his expression, but I felt his smile like warmth from a summer sun. He bravely waved at the two of us and then turned back, hand in hand with his wife and daughter, into the bright circle, and onto the other side.

My report back to Kurt Leibowitz was brief, but truthful. The people of Bruneau have no interest in selling their property, or allowing outsiders to build. He smiled wide, and handed me a note telling me where I’d be headed to next

Question about storage LSD

Hey guys, I have a brief question about storage. I'm going to be getting three tabs tonight, the problem is that I live in an apartment complex and we have maintenance that comes in and does routine checks. To my knowledge it is both heat and light that cause LSD to degrade, and I know most people keep it in the refrigerator. I don't want maintenance checking on our refrigerator and by chance finding anything, what would your suggestions be? I've heard that it's supposed to be safe to keep the tabs in a book on your shelf, but wouldn't that be too warm? It's normally 60-70 degrees in our apartment. Any advice or information would be much appreciated.
