Hey y'all -

We are moving tomorrow and desperately need to get rid of our refrigerator. It runs great, is clean, but has some minor exterior and interior cosmetic damage.

We had someone who wanted to buy it, but they bailed. Now we're just desperate to get it gone.

We're located in North Hollywood. We'll help you move it, but you will need a truck.

PLEASE COME GIVE IT A NEW HOME ASAP.

Thin Mint Cake: High Fat, Sugar Free, Gluten Free keto

[pic] http://ift.tt/1FnrKRr

Recipe made on video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oa7Mv8DB75k

For the cake itself:

6 eggs

1 cup milk of your choice (I used coconut milk)

1/4 tsp mint extract

1 cup frozen spinach, thawed and drained

1 tsp vanilla extract

4 tablespoons coconut oil

1/2 cup coconut flour

3 tablespoons erythritol (Swerve)

1/2 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp salt

For the frosting:

1 cup coconut oil

1/4 cup cocoa powder

1/2 tsp stevia extract

Preheat your oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit. Begin with your wet ingredients. Add to coconut flour, swerve, baking powder, salt a bowl and whisk together being sure to whisk out all of the lumps. Add the wet ingredients (eggs, milk, extracts, spinach, and coconut oil) to either a blender or a food processor and blend. Add the dry ingredients and blend for a second time until the mixture forms a thick batter. Poor into a shallow cake pan or spring form pan and bake for 45 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Set your cake aside to cool. You can either cool it on the counter (recommended) for a few hours or in the refrigerator for about an hour or until it is cool to touch.

In the meantime, create your frosting! Add a cup of room temperature (soft but not liquid) coconut oil, cocoa powder, and stevia to a bowl and whisk until it comes together. That’s it! This frosting is great for cakes but also can be use to top pancakes, cupcakes, muffins, you name it.

Once your cake is room temperature, spread the frosting in an even layer or get fancy and pipe it on your cake. Let set one more time to harden the frosting. It will have a texture similar to ganache. Cut and serve! Feel free to add some dark chocolate shreds over the top for a sophisticated finish. This cake screams, “Wanna piece of me?”

TIFU by telling my mother to go pound sand. tifu

This fuck up happened some years ago when I was about 22. I liked to drink.

My mom and I really didn't see eye to eye on things, so we'd have disagreements from time to time.

One morning I woke up with a hangover, while I was staying at my mom's for a weekend. I went to the kitchen to grab a glass of water.

Mom was doing dishes, so I asked if I could get in to the sink to get some water. One basin was full of soapy water, the other rinse water.

She says, "No, you can get water from the bathroom or get something from the refrigerator." Of course my mouth gets ahead of my brain, because, well, I'm hungover and possibly still slightly drunk.

So I say, "Instead of me going to the bathroom for water, why don't YOU go pound sand in your ass." Next thing I know, there's a bottle of Dawn dishwashing liquid being squirted in my mouth.

TL;DR Told Mom to pound sand, she decided to clean up my act for me.

This is what happens when you hide your poop butter in the refrigerator funny

I have a little brother that farted bare-assed into my face 8 years ago. His asshole puckered and I felt the bubbles of stench roll around my nose and fumigate my sinuses. It was the worst way I've ever woken up. I recently was on reddit looking at "the worst prank ever" where you melt butter, poop in a butter tub, pour the melted butter on top, let it coagulate, and then it looks like butter and hides your poop. I did that. It took about two weeks to find out about it. We were sitting at dinner and it started to smell a little. The butter had been left out for a few hours and had started to get soft, which for whatever reason was allowing the smell of the poop to be revealed. I tried to put it back in the fridge in my embarassment because I realized how fucked up a prank it was, and how my family was all eating the butter, not just my brother. I am not a smart man. My mother is the one that found the poop. Nobody knew I did it, because it literally makes no sense. My mother tried to sue the "I can't believe it's not butter" folks until I had to admit I pooped in the butter. Now my family won't speak to me. Hate begets hate. Don't join the dark side.

Norman wakes up and gets water lifeofnorman

Norman woke up at 2:37 a.m. thirsty, as he climbed out of bed his foot hit the cold hardwood floor. He noticed that the floor was cold like the weather outside, 62 degrees fahrenheit. He proceeded through his door way to the hallway. He took exactly 13 steps towards the stairs leading downstairs. He look his first step of the 16 step journey. The journey downstairs was uneventful. He proceeded to the kitchen 12 feet away. Entering the kitchen he looked to the refrigerator across the kitchen. He turned on the kitchen light as the kitchen has only one window. The rest of the house had enough moon lighting to stay dark. He opened the refrigerator and reached in towards a glass of water however there was carton of eggs in the way. He moved the eggs aside and grabbed the water. He drank about 3/7 of the cup. He put the cup back into the refrigerator and closed the refrigerator. He then proceeded to his room but turned around before he could reach end of the kitchen. He proceeded back to the fridge and opened it again. He moved the eggs back in front of the water and closed the refrigerator. He proceeded to the end of the kitchen and turned off the lights. He prepared to embark on his 16 step journey upwards. The journey was uneventful. He took 13 more steps back to his room and entered it. After walking on the ground for an extended period of time, the ground no longer felt cold. He entered his bed. He went to sleep. Norman no longer was thirsty.

Gas stations should have a small selection of candy bars in the soda coolers. Lightbulb

I know I much prefer a candy bar that's been in the refrigerator for a while. I think places like gas stations would improve sales if they had a little bin of them stuck to the inside of the door. Not only because they taste better cold, but they're a good impulse buy for someone getting a beverage.

Anyone have experience germinating a Red Maple? gardening

I've recently purchased some Red Maple bonsai seeds from a reputable source and I really want to get the scarification, stratification, germination process right.

The directions I received say: Soak in hot tap water, let stand for 24 - 48 hours. Drain water, combine with 1 tablespon of sterile moist peat moss in a polybag. Warm stratify for 60 days (70 degrees), cold stratify for 60 - 120 days. Sow seed 1/8" deep, tamp the soil.

Pretty cut and dry, but I'd like to get some advice on how one might go about perfecting them. I've poked around other online forums and some suggest placing the bag on the top of the refrigerator for the warming process and in the fridge for cold. Some say keep the bag air-tight, others suggest leaving it open. Some say spray the peat with water occasionally to keep it moist, others say to absolutely not do that to prevent molding.

If anyone has successfully germinated a bonsai that required this kind of procedure - how did you go about doing it? Do you have any other tips?

My Refrigerator is leaking and I'm stuck as to what is the cause. Took some photos for experts to take a look at. DIY

So as you can see in the photos it's leaking from within the fridge section in the top left corner. It pools up under the crispers. This an old Amana TX18JW. I couldn't even google it to find it. I did find a photo of a similar looking fridge, and some of the things I've read would lead me to believe there is some drain that is clogged.

However, after removing the freezer panel I did not see a drain like this and only saw what's in this photo. I'm not sure if that's what the fridge should look like or not.

Thanks for all the help. Really trying to hold this beast together.

TIFU by drugging my father. tifu

This actually happened today, but I'm going to give some background first. My older brother's friend received a gift basket of edibles as a wedding present from a friend who worked at a medical marijuana dispensary a while back, but there was too many edibles for her to consume, so she handed out a few brownies to her friends including my brother. Each brownie is 20 doses, so they have lasted a while in a freezer in our garage (not our main refrigerator in the kitchen). In an effort to make sure I don't accidentally take too much, my brother cut the brownie up into 20ths so if I take one, I can be sure I'm only getting 1 dose at a time. Here's where the fuck up happened...

I decided I wanted to have one tonight, so last night I brought up a single dose (probably about the approximate size of a jolly rancher), sealed it in a ziplock bag, and stuffed it in the freezer in our kitchen. This morning, when I checked my phone, I had received the following text message from my dad:

"Ate small piece of chocolate on top shelf of Shelf of refrigerator door. Very dizzy going to ER. Love you . Bye"

Apparently he saw a piece of brownie and figured that it was just a small bit of leftover (regular) brownies he had made this weekend and popped it in his mouth on his way to work as a quick snack. By the time he got to work, he said he could barely walk and couldn't figure out how to dial his phone for help. Luckily, he works at a hospital and was able to get to the emergency room because he thought he was dying. He had a stroke about 10 years ago and has suffered dizzy spells/headaches/lack of balance since then, so it wasn't immediately obvious to him what was going on at the time, but eventually made the connection and called me to pick him up.

Question thread for TFP 7daystodie

General A12 Questions

  1. Will the bears have zombie like AI where they try to tear down structures? cause i would totally love to bait a bear into a cage, then open said cage to unleash my attack bear on the zombie hordes..... i could amass a bear army.....
  2. Can we eat the bears? If not what purpose do they serve other than just a hazard?
  3. is there going to be a "winter jacket" made from the bears hides to help us live in snow biomes?
  4. Will Winter biomes adversely affect the Zeds as well? its kind of hard to continue motion if you are frozen solid....
  5. you say that we will be able to flashlight mod all firearms other than the blunderbuss: does this include the crossbow and or bow?

General QoL Improvement requests

can you please remove the broken legs mechanic from the game until it is working properly? it is extremely frustrating to have my leg unfairly broken two to four times a day.

The ways i have broken my leg so far in A11.

  1. Jumping on my friends back, who is standing next to me. the act of sliding off of his back resulted in a broken leg.
  2. Holding the jump button too long, and landing on the same surface i've jumped from
  3. Jumping in/out of that crappy part where Dirt meets Bridge metal
  4. Placing a sleepingbag under my feet
  5. Placing a sleeping bag under my friends feet
  6. being tapped by a Z with full hp.
  7. Stepping off of a pebble.
  8. jumping on a couch
  9. jumping on a bed
  10. jumping on practically anything.

Can you please re-balance the Bleeding & Stunned Mechanics

  1. Make it so that the bleeding threshold is set to not activate if player is over 60% Hp.it makes no sense that i should "Bleed out" from a crawler tap, especially when i am in full iron armor, that didnt even visibly dent my fully buffed HP Bar.
  2. Stunned should have a much lower chance of occurring with certain helmets, such as iron, Kevlar, and Mining.

Can you please Work in a mechanic in which i can allow cornbread to become moldy bread

  1. Add a timer to Certian perishable items, in which they slowly degrade into a rotten form, unless preserved within a jar, or stored within a storage chest (or refrigerator)

Crude Shield Weak zombie attacks- blocks 25% of damage.
Makeshift Shield Zombie attacks
Shield Non rifle rounds- Blocks 20% of fire arm damage. All Zombie attacks other than cops- Blocks 75% of damage

One of my favorite things and least favorite things happened last night. TalesFromTheFrontDesk

I had a guest come to check in last night when I had about 15 arrivals left. As usual, I get his last name and check my arrivals list. It wasn't there. So, I ask if it could be under a different last name then he spells it as if I didn't hear him. I go on to check the the rest of the weekend and the next month to make sure he didn't book for the wrong date. Of course, nothing shows up. I asked if he had a confirmation number I can look up. He gets frustrated and marches back out to his car to get his iPad to look it up. He opens the web page and realizes he didn't submit the reservation. I just smile and start a walk-in. Luckily, I wasn't sold out.

Least favorite:

A higher tier guest calls me at the front desk at about 10:30 PM and says her refrigerator is not working. I apologize for that and inform her that maintenance has left for the night and that we usually don't keep extra refrigerators in stock. I go on to offer to store her items in our kitchen fridge and for some reason she takes offense to that. I then offer to move her to a different room and she declines. She goes on to say she is very upset and that this was one of the reasons she choose to stay with up, blah blah blah. I ask her if there was anything I can do to help her and she says no and then the call ends.

I don't understand why one would get upset after I offer potential solutions to your problem and they decline all of them.

Any ideas for a snack/dinner combo for a very active 4p-1a job? EatCheapAndHealthy

Ok you guys I have lurked here for a little while and I enjoy some of the things posted here. Some of them have worked and some I feel like I need to perfect. For example, making a bulk meal of chicked and rice was good the first 2-3 times I ate it but after that I found I still had a lot of food to go through and I found myself sick of rice and chicken. My job is very active and I am pretty much constantly moving. I spend the first half (4-8) unloading a truck and I am allowed to have small things like candy bars and I have recently been using Clif bars and those things are wonderful to curb hunger for only being $1 but I was curious if snack-wise if anybody had any other ideas?

For lunch I can prepare with all the basic appliances but at work, all I have is a microwave and a refrigerator. Lately out of laziness I just find myself buying Hot pockets when I am really hungry ($2.18) or if not too hungry a $2 pretzel. This works but I am sure somebody could give me ideas for something filling and possibly cheaper.

One interesting quirk about my situation is I still live in with my mother. My brother and sister love to dive into food supplies if it looks good. While I can keep basic things like rice and potatoes no problem, I upset them when I wouldn't let them have any of the chicken I slow roasted so if possible maybe you have some ideas of foods that are easy to hide maybe or something that can be made pretty basic.

Thanks in advance for reading this and I Hope that somebody can give me some suggestions because Groceries is my largest outflow of money and I hoping to fix that a bit.

I suddenly have to start feeding myself and am getting anxious about it. Help? cookingforbeginners

Hi everyone,

I live in a country where it's cheaper to eat outside than it is to cook. Like, seriously cheap. However, I moved into a new apartment in a ritzy neighborhood, and there are no food stalls here! I'm now having to cook for myself, and it seems like such a big change that I'm getting anxious about starting.

Here's what I have on hand:

  • a kitchen with a stove and a relatively large refrigerator (yes that's a big deal, a lot of apartments here don't have one)

  • some pots and pans of various sizes

  • salt and pepper

  • a rice cooker

  • a blender

I do not have an oven or a microwave. I have access to a supermarket and I don't mind spending money ton the basics. However, I'm just worried about buying all of this stuff and then wasting it because it's just 1-2 people eating it. I'd prefer to cook something that I can eat as leftovers during the week.

Please help me get back into the groove of cooking, cause I kind of feel like a 28-year old child. Thank you!

Stuffed Jalapenos wrapped in zucchini vegetarian

Stuffed Jalapenos wrapped in zucchini

I made jalapenos stuffed with cream cheese, and wrapped in bacon the other day. They were absolutely delicious. But I am trying to reduce my consumption of meat, so I decided to try to make a vegetarian version. I am not a fan of imitation meat, so I brainstormed for vegetarian ingredients that would bring a savory, salty, and crispiness to the appetizer. The recipe I came up with was kind of made up as I went along, but I think it is good enough to share. The following recipe differs from the picture, because I incorporated the changes I will use in future batches. I found that the Parmesan cheese did not add enough flavor alone, and the sauteed tomatoes added nothing to the flavor. Some ideas I have for alternatives to the caramelized garlic are slivers of sauteed portobello mushrooms, and sun dried tomatoes.

Ingredients:

Medium jalapenos (~2 per person) Cream cheese (8 oz should be enough for 10+ jalapenos)(I used flavored cream cheese) Medium zucchini (One long enough to wrap around half of a jalapeno a couple of times, and has a small to medium diameter.)(One medium zucchini will wrap ~4 jalapenos) Small amount of Soy sauce Small amount of olive oil Garlic cloves (2 per jalapeno) Parmesan cheese (A large pinch of freshly grated Parmesan cheese for each jalapeno half)

Directions:

Jalapenos: 1. Cut the jalapenos lengthwise, and remove the seeds. Make sure both haves have some stem. If you want the jalapenos to be spicy, leave the ribs in. Remove the ribs to have a mild jalapenos. 2. Boil jalapenos for 4 minutes. After boiling drain the jalapenos, and rinse under cold water. Don't breath the steam! It is spicy! 3. Pat dry the jalapenos and fill with cream cheese. I used the garden, and onion & chive flavored cream cheeses. 4. Set aside.

Zucchini: 1. Cut a thin slice off the long side of the zucchini, so it doesn't role around. 2. Cut thin slices of the zucchini lengthwise. 3. Brush a thin coat of soy sauce onto both sides of the zucchini slices. There should only be a hint of discoloration. The goal is to not make the zucchini taste like soy sauce, but to introduce glutamates that add a savoriness to the appetizer. Let marinate for a few minutes. 4. Gently cook the zucchini slices until they are tender and flexible enough to wrap around a jalapeno half. For a small batch, one could get away with sauteing on a low heat, using olive oil. For larger batches, baking the slices will be the way to go; brush olive oil on both sides and bake at 350 degrees until tender. Remember to flip the slices, so both side are flexible enough. 5. Set aside and let cool.

Extras: 1. Peal garlic cloves, and cut the cloves in half lengthwise. 2. Saute the garlic on a low heat, so the garlic will caramelize instead of frying or charring. 3. Set aside finished garlic 4. Shred the Parmesan and set aside.

Assembly: 1. Place 2 slices of the garlic on the cream cheese in each of the jalapenos. 2. Wrap the jalapeno half in the cooked zucchini, securing with a tooth pick. 3. Place evenly spaced on an aluminum foil lined cookie sheet. 4. Place in a 350 degree preheated oven for 45 minutes. 5. Put a large pinch of Parmesan cheese on each jalapeno half after ~35 minutes. 6. After baking, broil the stuffed jalapenos until the Parmesan cheese is golden brown, and there is a hint of charring on the jalapeno and zucchini. 7. Remove from oven and let cool for a few minutes. 8. Remove tooth picks and cool in the refrigerator or freezer, so the cream cheese sets ups.

Put it in your face! You wont regret it.

Best way to resolve dispute with property manager over security deposits? legaladvice

I live in Washington, DC.

I lived in a house with 2 roommates from June 2013 to February 2015. We were all in college at the time and needed a cheap place close to school. Our landlord lives out of state and we never met him, he had left the property in the control of a local property management office.

The office didn't inspect the place prior to our move-in and it was in terrible shape. The floors were caked with dirt, there was mold in the showers, carpets were filthy, and a lot of stuff was damaged and broken. After numerous calls and emails the property managers sent a cleaning crew 3 weeks later who got it to a livable, sanitary condition. However, over the course of our time there we had problem after problem, almost all things caused by the house itself falling apart and only one minor thing due to damage on our part (accidentally wrecked the garbage disposal when a glass fell in). The property managers wouldn't respond to emails or calls for weeks sometimes even though we were dealing with issues such as a broken HVAC system, a major leak in the roof that was growing mold, and other similar issues.

This past winter things got really bad. The fridge broke completely. After weeks of trying to contact them they sent a tech out to evaluate it who confirmed that it was broken and told them to replace it. 2 months later, they still hadn't replaced it. In addition, we started having a large number of mice in the house. Normally, according to our lease, pests are the tenant's responsibility, but we had a consult with an exterminator who found several major structural holes in the house through which the mice could enter.

Fortunately, they hadn't taken the initiative to re-sign us to another 12 month lease when our first one expired, so we were living month-to-month. We gave notice of termination in January and moved to other places. Due to their inaction on the refrigerator and the mouse issue (which meant that we couldn't store perishables and didn't feel safe eating in the house due to mouse droppings), we didn't pay rent for December, January, or February.

I looked up DC housing code and it seems that we would have a basis to sue for the percentage of time we were unable to have full use of the property. We used our email history with the property mgrs to backtrack and put together a timeline of when various things were broken. The HVAC, for example, wasn't working for over 50% of our tenancy. I don't know a good way to calculate this but I would think that it would be a sum much greater than the 3 months of unpaid rent.

We spoke with the new head property manager (who just started last fall and was trying to clean up the messes left behind by the previous guy and other employees) because he was wondering where our rent was. We took pictures, compiled the emails, and met with him to explain the situation. We said that we would pursue it in court if we needed to, but we didn't want to do that. He agreed and said he'd rather not go to court too.

Per our lease, they had 45 days to return the security deposit or to provide written notice that they would be using funds from it. They didn't provide us any notice, and finally after weeks of attempts they explained that they were obligated to return it to the owner due to the unpaid rent.

My understanding is that they would be obligated to return the deposit to us per the lease, and the landlord would have to then pursue us legally for the unpaid rent. However, it looks like we are going to have to go on the offensive now.

My questions

The DC small claims limit is $5000, more than the amount of the deposit. I'm trying to figure out what our best course of action is. Specifically, whether we should file in small claims or try to get a lawyer, and whether we should sue the property manager, the landlord, or both?

I'm also wondering if we should try to contact the owner directly. To our knowledge, the property managers didn't inspect the house at all between June 2012 (when the previous tenants moved in) and February/March 2015. I'd venture to guess that would be a breach of their contract with the owner.

Thanks for the help!

TL;DR

Lived in a very run down and unsanitary house for 20 months. We moved out when it became unlivable (not due to our own actions) and didn't pay the last 3 months of rent. Property manager isn't returning our security deposit as a result but didn't give us any notice that they were using funds from it within the 45 day period required by DC housing code and our lease. Trying to figure out whether to pursue legal action, and if so who we should go after and whether we should file in small claims.

Can a refrigerator get warmer with low amperage? refrigeration

My refrigerator has been warming up the past few days, but then goes back to normal overnight. It doesn't stop producing cold, but it's just not cold enough (the ice in the freezer melts, for example).

It is hot out, but I have a window A/C in the kitchen, so the room temperature isn't too much higher than other days. The only connection I can make is that the refrigerator's warming coincides with when I am running the A/C. I believe they're on the same circuit, so I'm wondering if it's possible that the refrigerator's performance is tied to the amount of current it can draw.

The refrigerator is pretty old. My landlord is shopping for a new one for us, but, if it is the current draw that's affecting it, will a new refrigerator fix the problem?

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Completion: Fat Loss/Male/36/6'3"/215 lbs BTFC

I completed it! I'm pretty proud of my progress and I've made some really great habits and broke some bad ones along the way.

The first week or 10 days were really tough. I probably cut my calories by 1000 to 1500 cold turkey and my body was hungry. My stomach was growling, I was tired when I went to the gym, it just didn't feel like it was going to work. My brother, who has done a major 12 week transformation in the past told me that was normal, but told me to drink water and snack on something healthy if I absolutely HAD to eat for the first two weeks. It worked out and from then on out it was pretty smooth sailing. I had a couple of times where I really wanted to eat something I shouldn't but I managed to suppress the urges. I had events happening throughout the competition (birthdays, concerts, sporting events) so I planned those to be my small cheat meals during the competition. I'd usually drink with meals when I went out like that, but I abstained from alcohol and just made "better" choices when I ordered my food. The rest of those days was healthy and I never let myself have entire days that were cheating days. Tried to keep the calories to my ~2500 even with that cheat meal, and always made sure that there was a good protein source and I wasn't just chowing down some pasta with cream sauce.

I did Stoppani's Shortcut to Shred for the entire 12 weeks. It worked for me and I really enjoyed the HIIT cardio between each set of weights. The first few weeks I felt dumb stopping between sets to jump rope or do step ups, but I got over it pretty quickly and just went for it. My jump rope skills are pretty awesome now. Can do a minute of pretty quick jumps no problem and have moved on to working on single leg hops. Not very good at those yet... My weights went down by the end of the program. Eating 2500 calories for me was either not enough, or I wasn't getting enough protein or something, but my overall heavy days probably dropped by 5% or so in the 12 weeks. I'm not super concerned as it's easy to get my weights back up and if I want to do a bulk, I can. I'm 36 and do martial arts and play soccer so putting up huge numbers and being a beast isn't super important to me.

My Fitness Pal was instrumental. I've used in the past for weight loss/calorie managment and it's worked great, but I always did it solo. Having the community on there and seeing everyone post stuff everyday and keep their diaries up to date was great for accountability. You can check out my diet on there and also add me as a friend. Nicksoapdish is my mfp name and here's my page: http://ift.tt/1Qc0b2t

Some of my new/old habits: I used to hate grocery shopping and trying to keep things in the refrigerator that always seemed to go bad, but I figured out a way to make sure I had the stuff I need and always buy enough, but not too much. Hardly any food was wasted in the making of this transformation.

I also learned to prepare meals ahead of time and not be stuck somewhere and HAVE to eat fast food. I found myself not really craving fast food or junk food more or less and looked forward to my meals that I had prepared. (Salsa is the key to baked chicken and brown rice by the way. Find some good salsa and get down on it.) I made these meatballs that I posted a recipe for that were pretty awesome. Here's the link to my previous post if anyone is interested in some good food to make ahead of time and is even pretty decent cold: http://ift.tt/1Qc0dr6

Today is the last day of my diet. I'm going to chomp on some pizza from my favorite place tomorrow night, and I'm definitely going to get some pancakes and/or biscuits and gravy at some point in the near future. I went to the store today to get some more rice and some vegetables because I'm going to continue with healthy eating. I thought "maybe I'll grab some snacks or cookies while I'm here since I can cheat tomorrow" I walked through the bakery and the snack aisles and really didn't want anything. I think some of my snacking instincts are gone. I don't really want to eat a bunch of garbage. It was a good feeling.

My plan for the future is to try to do a 5 day strict and 2 day loose kind of thing. Stick to my diet more or less and to the calorie goals of whatever I'm working toward and then twice a week for one meal and maybe a dessert, go eat something good. No contest until BTFC 9 and I'll see about doing a cut or bulk at that point.

This was an amazing experience. The reddit BTFC community and the mfp community both helped keep me accountable and seeing everyone else that I started this with finish up and have such great results has been inspiring and satisfying. I'm glad I stumbled across this contest. It's been great!

So many things depression

Guys, I feel depressed. I have so many thoughts going through my mind that I am presently unable to really discuss it much, but I just feel emotionally like shit. Almost all the time, too - I just can't get the energy up to get out of bed and do work. I can hardly bring myself to read for school (it's also the end of the term), and my essays have been suffering. The entirety of the world has collapsed in on me, rendered me motionless and inert, and robbed me of my independence.

I can't talk to friends. I can't even speak with strangers; almost every single goddamned thing I try to say feels like a lie, and I don't really know why. Literally - there's a physical sensation that I associate with speaking now that makes me think if I say anything deep or internal, then I'm just lying. I don't know what it is. I'm afraid of it.

I was in AmeriCorps for 10.5 months as a legal assistant, helping people fill out their legal forms for custody, divorce, etc. During that time, due to poor organization within the program (both the greater Walla Walla area AmeriCorps program and the particular program I was serving) AND to my inability to see much progress in the fight of the oppressed, I fell into a lot of bad feelings. During the time I spent there, I unplugged my refrigerator and began sleeping on the floor, without a bed. I read a lot and had almost no furniture; all the furniture I did have was donated. I ate very little. I didn't feel particularly bad, but I just felt lost and estranged from everything. I eventually began following this motto: "Suffering is Greatness." I tried to create as much suffering my everyday life, which became a problem.

When I returned from AmeriCorps, "Suffering is Greatness" was still stuck in my mind. I'd picked up habits that made me unintentionally always do the most difficult thing I could in any situation. This is obviously problematic.

All in all, I just feel like shit now. I've been through a couple of relationships and I keep losing friends because of them, which compound difficulties onto this. Also, my mother lives in extreme poverty currently because of her own emotional issues. My father is retired, but he has a big tumor in his prostate due to Agent Orange exposure and is currently receiving treatment for it. I'm afraid.

I keep finding my friends lost in their own bullshit. My best friend, with whom I feel absolutely in love, has a tenuous relationship with another friend of mine (they've been sleeping together) who, due to his own cynical group of friends, is actually getting bullied regularly but can't do anything about it. (He's also about 20 years old; he can't do anything to stop that stuff because he works 7 days a week and is trying to be what he considers responsible.)

I'm not in a bad situation: my college is paid for (thank God) and I'm rather intelligent. But I question my reality at every turn. I'm afraid that if I have a relationship with a woman that I am taking advantage of her, because I'm afraid of being an oppressor. I live with fear in my every step. When I turn in a paper or an assignment, it's usually something that I've only started working on on the day it's due; I only tend to get decent grades regardless of the work I put in because I write essays out of boredom and confusion.

I'm guessing that I have a tendency to compound my stress because of my father's PTSD; we both let things build up until they reach their boiling points, and then explode. He's trained himself out of it, but I don't have that training - and honestly, I'm really afraid that one day the stress of the entire world is going to reach up and clock me so hard in the brain that I'll just want to end it all - either by walking away forever (mentioned above) or killing myself.

I refuse to walk away because I feel attached to the world I'm building. I refuse to kill myself because (regardless of whether I believe this) my father has always seen suicide as a waste, and I would hate to be a waste.

It's just that the entirety of the universe is such a vast place. It pulls me left and right and left again, without any thought about me or what I might be leaving behind when I get pulled into the future. I'm perpetually in a state of confusion. I don't usually feel very empowered or affirmed, and I'm unsure why.

It's just that lately, I just want to do absolutely nothing. Literally - I just want to exist like a mound of flesh in bed and think about how complex the world is, how I'm never going to understand it, and how the world is just going to keep on moving without me.

I love riding bicycles, but lately even that's done nothing for me. I tried starting a new relationship with someone - just to encourage me to feel - but that just doesn't feel right, either. I tried working on my bike earlier today, but even spending ten minutes and being unable to fix it immediately sent me into a frustration that led to my throwing things, hitting the bicycle (and throwing it on the ground multiple times), and then crying on my floor for at least ten minutes. What can I do?

I can't just keep going on like this. It feels like it's going to kill me, either by my own hand or by some sort of stress-borne sickness. I'm stuck. The world pulls me perpetually in multiple directions: should I be an intellectual? Should I be a bum? Do I need a college education? What direction is my life headed in? Will the last time I see my father in my lifetime be the last time I ever see him? What of my friends? When they die, are they just gone? What about me? What about the world? I have very specific (and private) political beliefs, which are very important to me, but I can't even express or partake in any politics because I just don't have the motivation. I feel apathetic, and what's more - whenever I feel this way, I project my depression onto the world. If it's apathy, then the world becomes apathetic; I can't bring myself to believe that any of my friends actually care. If I'm angry then the world becomes angry, etc.

I tried taking acid recently, which actually helped a lot - it relieved a huge amount of stress and gave me some focus - but the depression, which is another issue, is still here. I can talk a little bit about it now, and that helps.

I don't know what I'd like to receive in response to this - encouragement is nice, but like the posting rules say, it doesn't really help that much. I feel like ending it (which I won't, despite how strong the feelings are). No matter how much I try to consider problems in a new light, they seem to just take old forms. And I don't want to ignore it or work through it: I want to figure it out.

I ran out of CO2 Homebrewing

A few months ago I ran out of CO2 for my keg and I have been too busy/lazy to refill it, mostly because it wasn't the best batch I have ever made. The keg is about 1/4 full and it has been in the refrigerator at ~40 degrees F. Should I even try recarbing it, or just dump it?

Frozen in Time shortscarystories

It’s my job to investigate apartments for hazardous materials or things like exposed wiring after tenants move out or get evicted. What I hate most are the surprises. Sometimes folks leave entire apartments full of broken furniture, rotting food, dirty laundry, rodents, and garbage. One thing I find unsettling is when I enter an apartment and see pictures of the former occupants, their memories frozen in time.

The last apartment I was assigned to was the worst yet. It was a ground floor unit in the back of this really run down apartment complex. The place was crawling with cockroaches and on the walls were smears of red and in the kitchen were dishes piled to the ceiling with a mountain of trash underneath. A woman and her two young boys lived here- a picture of the two boys hung on the refrigerator door next to a grainy photo of the mother. A social worker came by here responding to a request from PS 101 that the boys hadn’t been to school in ten days and discovered the entire family was gone.

The mother, who nobody in the building would describe as friendly, left a note explaining that she took the boys to their grandmothers and after that she actually came into the welfare office to pick up a check and reiterated the same thing. Probably for the best, wherever the boys are now is better than this place. I think on the last day they were seen the boys were visibly upset and pleading with their teacher that they didn't want to leave.

Unique to this apartment was the access to the back of the building. Although I couldn’t imagine anyone having parties back there, it sure did look like it was set up for barbecuing. In the back, against the wall, was a tall white freezer box that was still humming. The power in the apartment was shut off days ago so it was quite obvious that the box was powered from another source.

I motioned to my partner to investigate the freezer and the source of its power while I checked the gas stove in the kitchen. Before I was able to get underneath the stove my phone rang. It was a detective from the local precinct.

He asked me, “We have a tip that the two Jackson boys may be at the apartment you’re inspecting. I have a unit on the way over there now.”

I told him, “Nobody is here. The boys are with their mother in..”

My partner stumbled back inside making a lot of noise.

Putting my hand over the phone I asked him, “What is it?”

He pulled his mask off revealing his face drained of all color, "I know why the boys missed all of those days of school.”

From the muted phone in my hand I can hear the detective say, “No sir, that’s not what I mean.”

Oven-Roasted Carnitas recipes

I adapted /u/thefoodlab's recipe for oven-roasted carnitas annnnnd got myself a retweet from the man himself. Recipe below, and photos and narrative at my site.

  • 1 medium white onion, quartered
  • large handful of cilantro leaves
  • 3 lbs. boneless pork shoulder (Boston butt), cut into 2-inch cubes
  • Kosher salt
  • 1 medium orange, quartered
  • 6 cloves garlic, peeled and smashed
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1 cinnamon stick, broken into three or four pieces (optional)
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil

Preheat your oven to 275 degrees.

Set the pork in the baking dish, crowding it together so it fits snugly. The pork should fit with no open spaces. Squeeze orange juice over the pork then wedge the oranges into the casserole. Top with the garlic cloves, bay leaves and onion quarters. Cover the dish tightly with aluminum foil and roast 3 1/2 hours, or until the pork is fork tender.

Place a large fine-mesh strainer over a 1- or 2-quart bowl. Use tongs to remove the orange, onion, garlic and bay leaves, and discard. Put pork into the strainer, then pour any accummulate liquid over the top. Let drain, pressing gently before separating the meat from the strainer. Using your fingers or large forks, shred the pork. Season to taste with salt. Serve hot.

OR, if you want to serve later, cool to room temperature then seal in a large refrigerator-safe container. When you are ready, preheat your oven to 350 degrees, then reheat in a 9×13 baking dish for 20 minutes.

Never thought of feminism this way... Your thoughts? TwoXChromosomes

Contrary to popular belief, feminism did very little to "liberate" women. Rather, the technology created by men is mostly responsible for women's improved conditions. The chores of the household were greatly reduced because of man-made technology, such as the dishwasher, refrigerator, electric stove, and washer/dryer units neatly stored in closets. Before these inventions, women would have spent a full day's labour merely chopping wood, starting fires, boiling water, packing ice, churning butter and scrubbing clothes on the washboard. Since all of women's traditional work could now be done with the flick of a switch, it freed up women's time so they could enter into other fields of work during the day.

Women are not constantly pregnant from their teenage years to the end of their fertile years because of technological advances men created to benefit women, such as the birth-control pill and safe abortion techniques which freed women to look for other directions in life rather than simple motherhood. Feminism did comparatively miniscule things to liberate women. The only thing they really "freed" were their bossoms from their burning bras.

Deglazing and SS Pan Warping AskCulinary

I recently began replacing my old kitchenware and purchased an All Clad 12" skillet in their classic Stainless line. I've been reading all I can about proper care and noticed that I should never run the pan under cold water while it's still hot or else it may warp.

I typically keep opened wine in the refrigerator to somewhat preserve its taste. My question is will pouring cold wine into a hot pan to deglaze cause warping as well? I'm finding mixed answers on the Internet and wanted to gather what you guys have experienced in the past.

Thanks.

pan-roasted chicken thighs with parsley brown-butter vinaigrette recipes

recipe with photos at spoontang kitchen!

birds
4 skin-on chicken thighs
3 tbsp. fennel pollen
1 tsp ground and toasted ancho chile
1 oz canola oil
kosher salt
black pepper

vinaigrette
1/4 lb. butter
2 tbsp honey
1/2 cup parsley leaves
4 parsley stems with leaves
1/4 cup cider vinegar
pinch kosher salt
pinch cracked black pepper

toast
4 pieces rye, toasted
1 tsp ground and toasted ancho chile

pat the thighs dry. season. rub fennel powder and ancho chile into skin. allow to sit, open to the air, in the refrigerator for at least one hour or overnight (this helps to dry the skin and achieve a crispy crust).

preheat oven to 400. get large sautepan hot. add the canola oil, swish it around. get it smoking hot. add the thighs skin-side down. allow to cook until golden brown. flip once and continue for 3-5 minutes on the other side. (if your pan doesn't fit all thighs, do this in batches.) place in oven for ten minutes or until birds register 160 degrees fahrenheit. remove and allow to rest, turning once, for three minutes.

in a small mixing bowl, combine cider vinegar, honey, salt, and cracked black pepper. set aside. in a small sautepan, heat the butter, stirring often, over med-high heat. once butter begins to brown and smell nutty, remove from heat. slowly pour butter into the mixing bowl with vinegar mixture, whisking rapidly and constantly. you're looking for this to emulsify.

serve the birds atop toast. sprinkle toast with ground chiles and any extra fennel pollen. pour vinaigrette tableside over the birds. be heavy-handed and soak thoroughly through the toasts. top with parsley stems.

Somebody please tell me i did the right thing. offmychest

14 years ago, I had found a litter of orphaned mice, I didn’t know what to do to save them. I was only a kid, I didn’t have the guts to put them down. I sat with them and watched them slowly die.

Since then, I’ve felt indifferent towards just about anything and everything. I was afraid for a while that I was some kind of unfeeling sociopath.

So, Friday night I fixed my refrigerator. It had been overheating and I was afraid I might have to get a new one. I opened up the back and found the fan was stuck. A mouse had crawled through and its neck had been caught in the fan. I felt only relief as I peeled it off and salvaged my fridge.

Hours later, I found that she had been a mother to three. Two had already died, one was left, blind and afraid. I was immediately taken back to 14 years ago and resolved that I would save this one and redeem myself. I rushed to get the materials, but when I tried to feed him, he just would eat.

I stayed up with him two full days (weekend), trying anything and everything to save him. Different feeding methods and formulas. I was desperate, tired, and afraid. I tried everything and I could see he was in pain, by sunrise on Sunday, I knew I couldn’t save him. I’d failed again.

I knew he was suffering and I had to end it. When I went to gather him, I finally broke down. He climbed right into my hand and snuggled in my palm. He lay there, curled up and purring. He thought I was his mommy, he trusted my, he felt safe and loved. I laid on the ground sobbing uncontrollably. I’ve lost family and friends over the years, but these were the first tears I had shed in those 14 years.

His eyes opened that morning, for the first time, he looked at me, he wasn’t afraid. He didn’t feel any pain, I broke a cinder block over him; it was instant.

I tried so hard to save him, I thought he could save me. He felt loved, he trusted me, and I killed him.

I have felt more pain in one day than I have in over a decade. I now know I can feel, but it hurts to bad to feel. It’s terrible and beautiful all at once. Somebody, please tell me I did the right thing here, i can't take it.

TL; DR: Found an orphan mouse, couldn’t save him, killed him.

Since 80% of Oregon is experiencing a drought, here's some ways to conserve water: (*also, you shouldn't be washing your clothes in warm/ hot water) link to article in post. Portland

Residential Water Users

Lawn and Garden

Outdoor water use accounts for almost half the water used by the American home, and thus provides the greatest single opportunity for conserving. Water early in the morning before 10:00 a.m. Watering in the heat of the day allows the water to evaporate and watering late in the day may promote fungus and other lawn diseases. Depending on the weather, it’s generally better to water once a week and provide 1 inch to 1 ½ inches of water. (If it’s hot, you might have to water more often.) Time how long it takes to apply one inch of water by placing a flat-bottomed can about 6-feet away from the sprinkler.

Do not mow lawns too short; taller grass requires less water.

Consider letting your lawn brown out. It will come back.

Repair Leaks Check faucets and hose connections for leaks. Inspect pipes for pinhole leaks, and leaking joints. A slow drip can waste 15 to 20 gallons a day. Fix it and you will save almost 6,000 gallons a year.

Showers and Baths: Use low volume showerheads. They are inexpensive and can pay for themselves in water, sewer and energy savings in less than a year. For a five minute shower they can reduce water usage from some 40 gallons to 12 to 15 gallons.

Toilets

Flush only when needed. Do not use the toilet as a trash can. Put a water displacement device inside the toilet tank. Check for leaks. (If it's yellow ...)

Clothes Washer and Dishwasher Do only full loads. Avoid using extra cycles whenever possible. Choose a water-saving model.

Drinking Water Keep a container of cool water in the refrigerator instead of running the faucet. Leave the water off when brushing your teeth or shaving. Don't buy bottled water!!!

Garbage Disposal

Use the sink disposal sparingly.

Car Washing

Rinse car once, wash from bucket, rinse quickly again. Be sure to use a shut-off nozzle on your hose.

Please contact your individual water utility for more information on water conservation. Following are links to some utilities with informational websites on water use and conservation (even if you don´t live in these cities, the websites contain a multitude of useful information).

Whirlpool Refrigerator Not Defrosting HomeImprovement

We have a freezer-on-the-bottom Whirlpool fridge, 3 or 4 years old, that keeps frosting up on us. When I go through the onboard diagnostics, though, no errors get thrown out.

When I go through the diagnostics menu, the heater comes on and heats just fine and none of the thermistors check bad at the end of the diagnostics.

Any ideas?

Only thing i can think is the computer controller is going out and is just not telling the heater to kick on.

Are there problems where the heater or thermistors work and check good in diagnostics but still aren't working properly and need replacing?

Finally... The light at the end of a very long tunnel! breakingmom

After 1 long year, lots of set backs about 5k over budget, we are finally going to move into our 1100sqft addition.

Holy Fuck. This time I am not just saying this as a hopeful statement, I mean it's really happening!

My own little piece of heaven!

I can run the air at 72 if I want, I can have people over and shut my doors and not feel bad about having grandma home, or having her turn up the tv because we are to loud!

I can have my own bathroom, not have to walk through the house in a towel to get to my room.

Both my kids will have their own room, I won't have such a small room with the baby in it.

I can decorate my side of the house.

I can have my 2nd refrigerator put in.

Oh man! Time to plan a girls night. Time to plan a BBQ. Time to get this house feeling like home for both Grandma and I!!

Things are still rocky, but I have started taking to her. Listening to her and including her in a few things.

Slow process.. But I'm trying.

I am just really excited! Hubby and I can now have some hot sexy time that is not quiet, because we share a wall with the kids and grandma!

😂 I'm so happy right now!

Should I spend $445 to repair my refrigerator's damper, fix it myself, or should I just buy a new refrigerator? HomeImprovement

My Fridgedaire Electrolux model #frs26kr4cq0 (manufactured on 06-03) has been freezing food, hovering around 30-32 F. The repairman claims it is because the damper isn't working properly, but he doesn't know what is causing the problem; his solution is to install a whole new damper housing control panel assembly / control box kit.

A quick google search shows that this is a common problem, with a relatively easy solution and it seems easy enough for a layperson to fix it, plus the kit costs around $260.

Is this worth it, or should I just saved the money to buy a new refrigerator?

Thanks!

Tales of IT from Under the Sea #2 talesfromtechsupport

Running a LAN on a Submarine is akin to running a LAN in a rural biker bar, that is on top of a fault line, leaks regularly and who’s power comes from an old diesel generator “out back” – except for that diesel generator in this case is a Nuclear Reactor and the bikers are the crew. I’ve described it in different ways before but the above seems most fitting for my next tale. Given these conditions, the environment already isn’t optimal for the physical (or data integrity) of computers. Things shake, things vibrate. Laptops get dropped, and grow wings when the ship takes angles or encounters rough sea state. Users are obviously the prime source of most of these issues, and admittedly the problems generated by them are usually pretty minor and easily fixed. Once in a while though, someone manages to impress me. There are a handful of ways laptops get damaged, most of which you can probably imagine. Getting dropped is one, coffee spilled into keyboards is another. My personal favorite is the “I accidentally left a pen on the keyboard and shut the lid”.

It was about 9 in the morning and I was just sitting down from getting my second cup of coffee (Boatbucks for those who are curious) when my phone rings. Usually when people have problems they just come see me, however when the phone rings it is usually somebody of some importance with a problem. (Officer of the Deck, Captain, etc.) It’s the XO (Executive officer (second in command after the Captain)) calling, saying when he tries to log into his laptop, it tells him that “No Logon servers are available”. No sweat. I get up from my leaky hobbit hole and head to the XO’s stateroom. On the way I am thinking of what his problem could be. “His cable is unplugged. No, his port on the switch died. Oh, maybe his local switch got unplugged.” When I got there the XO was working on some paperwork and told me to hang tight and he would get out of my way so I could get in and work. The staterooms on submarines even for the CO and XO are hardly larger than a couple of refrigerator boxes standing side by side.

I get in and sit down. I verify the issue by attempting to login myself and get the same message ruling out PEBKAC error, so I thought. The XO comes back in and sits down on his rack, and we start chatting a bit while I restart the computer to check a couple of possibilities. He’s new on board so the crew doesn’t really know him yet, so I am sure he’s telling me things just so it will percolate to the little people. He tells me he has a Masters in Computer Science and was into programming in College. “Cool” I think, “not another computer illiterate person I will have to coddle”. After a few minutes of niceties, he says he is going to go do some things and come back in a bit. He walks out. I shut the lid of the computer to disconnect it and take it elsewhere, to verify that the NIC was working and to prove/disprove that his drop was bad. This was when I realized that on this day, the bar for interesting ways to damage a computer had been raised.

At first glance everything looked right, except for the RJ45 connector looked a bit strange. I pull the laptop out from the hutch a little bit more and take a good look at it. It’s plugged in upside down. “No” I think at first, “that’s silly”. After all, they’re keyed so they can’t be plugged in upside down. Then I realize that the connector is in fact plugged in upside down. I pull out my multitool and proceed to pull the connector out of the NIC.

Everything was broken. The tab on the connector had been broken off. The contacts inside the NIC were bent all over the place, some smashed at a bizarre angle. The icing on the cake was the body of the NIC itself though. Usually when NIC’s get damaged, the pins/tracks/contacts/whatever get bent. Typically I can just straighten them out and all is well. Today was not that day. On the laptops I have the NIC’s are this strange plastic encapsulation with a metal reinforcement around the unit. At the base though there is a small plastic strip that prevents you from inserting a connector upside down, and locks the tab into the NIC. This plastic piece was broken.

As I picked this thing apart I found all the missing pieces buried inside the NIC. About then is when the Captain showed up looking for the XO, and finding me in his place. CO: “Hey have you seen the, woahhhh.” Seeing what I was doing (pliars down in the NIC) he steps in to watch me. Asking me what happened I told him “I don’t know, Sir. The XO couldn’t log in so I came to see what was the matter and found this.” Grabbing the end of the cable he looks at the connector and says “How do you plug this in upside down? It’s not even the same shape.” Me: “I dunno, I’ve seen a lot of broken things but this is the first one of these that I’ve seen. The XO had just finished telling me that he had a Masters in Computer Sci when he walked out and I found this.” The skipper shrugs and says “If it fits I sits” and walked out.

He went full internet on me. The Captain of this warship. The man who has probably been around since the Continental Navy dropped a gem of the interwebs in my lap. He goes and sits down in his stateroom, which is only separated from the XO’s by a pair of sliding doors, in between of which is the Head (bathroom) they share. I lean back in the chair and call through the head “Sir, I have to know. How do you know about If it fits I sits?” He sighs and turns his head to look at me. “F****** Cat memes, my daughter loves those f****** cat memes.”

I put my head down on the hutch and laughed for a good minute. After I had regained some of my composure, he went on to tell me that his daughter prints them out and puts them into his briefcase for him to find at work sometimes. About then is when I gave up on the XO’s laptop. I pulled the Hard Drive out, swapped in into another chassis and re-terminated his cable. About then the XO came back and asked me how it was going. I asked how he had managed to plug his cable in upside down and he said that he just plugged it in the way he always does. “I reached back there and just plugged it in. There is that annoying flap there that covers the connection so it’s always a pain.” (There is a little spring loaded cover for the network adaptor and USB ports on these computers.) “It felt a little harder than usual to plug in but I heard it click.” In my mind I’m thinking “a little harder than usual. Maybe if you have like super human Hulk strength or something.”

I walked away from that trouble call humored, and with a slightly deeper level of knowledge of the lives of those I work for. The more you know.

TL;dr – Someone plugged a cable in upside down and the Captain knows about Cat memes.
