Survival Tips for Icepocalypse 2017 StLouis

With the incoming ice storm, I thought it would be useful to create a thread to discuss ways to prepare for and deal with ice, snow, and related problems. Most of us Midwesterners have done this before, but it never hurts to be well-prepared. I've compiled some tips below, but feel free to post others and/or correct/add to any of my own suggestions.

Ahead of time:

• Trim tree branches that might come down. Also, find a place to park that isn't under a tree or anything else that might fall.
• Stock up on food, especially canned and other non-perishables that can be prepped/eaten w/o electricity.
• Stock up on water - this doesn't mean you have to go buy jugs of water (though you could). You could also fill some larger pots, jugs, pitchers, etc. with water. You won't lose water if the power goes out, but you might if there's a problem with a pipe/main.
• Turn down your refrigerator/freezer to lower/lowest temp (within reason) - if you lose power, your food will last longer.
• Fill your car gas tank - Having a full tank helps prevent ice buildup in your fuel system, and you want a full tank in case you end up needing to travel.
• Cover your car in some way (cardboard on windshield, tarps, etc.).
• Make sure you have flashlights/lanterns and batteries (or charge them if they are re-chargeable).
• Pick up a commercial de-icer (or make one in a spray bottle - two parts isopropyl alcohol to one part water) and make sure you have reliable windshield scrapers.
• Pick up material to give you better traction in case you get stuck (sand, kitty litter, even some slices of cardboard). Keep these in your car if you have to travel.

During:

• Stay off the roads if possible.
• Turn up your heat - if you lose power, you'll be warmer longer.
• Keep your phone/tablet/laptop plugged in so it has the highest charge possible if you lose power.

If you lose power:

• Open fridge/freezer as little as possible.
• Leave a faucet running, even just a trickle. This helps prevent pipes from freezing.
• Ensure larger appliances are unplugged and turned off. This helps prevent a power surge when the power comes back on.
• Leave a light on so you know when power is restored.

Trim/Grind Granite Countertop StLouis

I cannot seem to find anyone who will come to my house to trim/grind about 1/2" off of my granite counter top. This needs to be done on the overhang to fit my refrigerator properly. If anyone can provide a referral on a granite installer/contractor who can provide this service, it would be very much appreciated.

I'm moving out of an apartment in 48 hours and I won't have time to clean it. Any recommendations for a cleaning service I could hire for a one-off in South County? StLouis

I need someone to do a deep clean of everything, including the refrigerator and inside of my oven. I could leave the mess for my apartment complex to clean, but I don't want to come across as a bad tenant, and they'll charge me $500 to do it!

Anything suggestions for something more reasonably priced, and with short notice? Thanks.

We found a house much earlier than expected, so we're leaving our apartment lease a little early. Our landlord is being super cool about this, and is just asking that we help in finding someone to rent after we leave (should be move-in ready on Sept. 14). No sublease necessary; you'll sign a new lease with the landlord.

Found Out Sex Offender Lives Next to Me StLouis

So, me and my girlfriend bought a great little house in Maplewood about six months ago, a fixer-upper, I guess I'd say, but a lovely little house. Our neighbor house on one side is odd. It's a house split into four or so apartments. The owner lives in one apartment (I found this out by searching for the property on the STL County website). I was wondering who the owner is because of the fairly dilapidated state of the place. Old-ass above ground pool in the back yard, random refrigerator there as well. General disrepair of the house. Wondered if the landlord lived there or not in case I needed to talk with him about anything.

On to the real story. We saw one of the tenants a while back and both said to each other, "that dude looks like a sex offender." Well, didn't think much about it, and today I randomly decided to search for the address of the house on google and what did I find? The guy who looked like a sex offender, is actually a sex offender, and not only a sex offender, but a guy who was convicted of raping a 10 year old girl and and 11 year old girl. Now, this conviction was back in 1993, and he got out in 2004, and according to casenet and the registry, he had no other convictions. I guess someone who rapes a ten year old and an eleven year old can be reformed???

But, I just found out I live next to a child rapist. I don't know what to do. Obviously I'm concerned for the safety of my girlfriend (but luckily shes a bit too old for his tastes...and we aren't planning on having kids) But there are children than live in the house behind them. There's also a child that comes to the house with what I assume to be it's mother. I can't decide if they live there or not, but I'm assuming they are visiting the rapist because I've seen the child walking the rapist's dog. There are also numerous other families with children that live in the neighborhood. I'm worried that they don't know this person is around.

I mean, I've wanted everyone in this shitty place next to us to move or the place get condemned since we moved in because it's pretty much a blight on the neighborhood. I don't know if it's a halfway house or something, but the amount of randoms coming in and out makes me think something funny is going on aside from just the sex offender living there.

I don't know if there's anything I can do here. I figure I'm pretty much screwed into living next to a child rapist now...I don't want to move because I like my house and I love my neighborhood, except for my neighbors. Unfortunately the owner is old, but not old enough to die soon. And I don't know if the rest of the neighborhood knows what I know. Does anyone have any advice here? I'm completely lost and confused.

Should have thought to search the registry before moving, I guess...Now I know that's something to worry about...

TLDR: hate my neighbors and their shitty house split into apartments, found out that one of the guys that lives there was convicted of raping two children.
