I GOT HOOKED ON THE GAMESHOW FROM HELL NoSleepOOC

When I was a young man, about eighteen or so, my friend Scott asked if I wanted to help strip out this house prior to it being demolished. I jumped at the chance, figuring I could use the extra cash.

So, me, Scott, and a couple of other guys, started work on that house, clearing it from top to bottom, and I was paid about thirty dollars a day, back when thirty dollars was actually worth something.

I was assigned the basement while the other guys worked on the ground floor and attic, which didn’t bother me; I liked working alone.

The basement came as something of a surprise. There were easy chairs down there, a moth-eaten sofa, a small broken-down refrigerator, and a massive collection of Time magazines stacked in one corner, with dates going back to the late sixties. And squatting in front of the sofa was this really old pre-digital TV set. It was huge and ugly, like a great big box sitting on four wooden legs.

The entire basement smelled of mould and sour milk and prehistoric vomit.

Because I figured it would help the time pass quicker I switched the television on. It took a few seconds to power up and when it did there was some kind of 80’s gameshow playing. I knew it was the 80s because of the clothes people were wearing, and their style of hair. The sound was pretty garbled and the quality of the broadcast was hit and miss but I remember the host, he was a large man with a huge, almost cartoonish, chin, like he was wearing some kind of prosthetic or something. He was the original lantern jaw and he wore this ridiculous tweed suit that strobed pretty badly as he moved around the studio.

The contestants were equally weird looking. There was this woman with real birds nesting in her beehive hair-do. They’d start singing every time she got a question right. It was a gimmick, of course, probably concocted to make the show stand out in a crowded schedule, but still, that woman’s eyes were freakish, they were slanted at a really weird angle and she’d blink in sudden rapid clusters.

Another guest, a middle-aged man, was dressed in the uniform of a Major with the US military. He was even more freakish than the woman because his entire lower jaw was missing. His face literally ended with his top row of teeth. It was some kind of war injury and the Major used a voice amplifier to communicate. It was hooked into his throat and it made him sound like a robot.

The other guests were a mixed assortment of strange to totally fucked-up, a young man wearing black sunglasses with an eye painted on each lens. An old woman with false teeth that she kept taking out and polishing against the sleeve of her blouse. Whenever she took her teeth out her cheeks would cave in to a ridiculous extent.

I couldn’t believe this shit. Pretty soon I’d forgotten all about my work and I was crouched in front of the TV, watching the show with a growing sense of disbelief. It was like they’d raided the local freak farm. I turned the volume up as high as I could but the sound quality was crap and it was still an effort to hear what was going on.

I figured the host was called Mr Pontiac because his name kept flashing up on screen, but for some reason everyone on the show called him Mr P. It took a while to realise there were actually two Mr Pontiacs. I think they were twins, or else they were made-up to look alike. One version of Mr Pontiac was cheerful as fuck. He kept laughing and joking and he’d perform this weird little dance every time someone got a question wrong.

The other version of Mr Pontiac seemed perpetually pissed off. He never smiled. Never joked. And at one point he seemed on the verge of hitting one of the contestants. He wore a tie whereas the cheerful Mr Pontiac wore a large striped bow tie, other than that they were both identical.

I never quite figured out what the object of the game was, but the guests kept winding up in some pretty weird predicaments, like standing in a huge tank and stomping on thousands of live roaches, or running around this enclosure, trying to snap the heads off squawking chickens with a pair of garden shears, it was insane, not even cable would carry shit this extreme, but for some reason I couldn’t tear my eyes away from the screen. It was like watching a slow car crash.

That first day I completely forgot what I was doing there. I just sat on the old couch and watched this show. It never ended. It didn’t cut to commercial breaks. It just went on and on. I could hear my friends working away upstairs and occasionally they’d shout out to each other, but they sounded far away, not really part of my reality anymore.

I had this uneasy feeling that kept growing inside me the longer I sat there, but I couldn’t tear my eyes away from the set. I felt compelled to answer the questions, trying to beat the contestants’ time, I’d start repeating all the gameshow slogans, and I’d get really mad with a contestant if they flunked a task – I was becoming emotionally committed to the outcome of the game and I still didn’t know what the game was about.

Scott’s voice ricocheted down the stairs. ‘Hey, Nicky, boy, what the hell are you doing down there?’

I gave a start and quickly switched the set off.

‘I’m working my ass off,’ I called back. Checking my watch, I realised almost two and half hours had passed. Strange. It only felt like five minutes. I hadn’t even started clearing out the basement.

I got home later than usual that evening.

My girlfriend, Jessie, tried to tell me about her day, but, somehow, we wound up getting into a huge fight, I felt really agitated for some reason, everything pissed me off, the sound of her voice, the way she’d arranged her hair, even the Goddamn colour scheme of the living room, I couldn’t believe I’d let her get away with this shit for so long.

I wound up sleeping on the sofa. I Googled the gameshow on my laptop, Mr Pontiac, Mr P, nothing, no mention of it, which made no freakin’ sense, the show had a pretty big budget, and it was extreme enough to have registered on someone’s radar, I mean how many gameshows feature the slaughter of live chickens for cryin’ out loud, but like I said, there was nothing – zip -

I tried to get to sleep but I kept seeing images from that show, every time I dozed the most grotesque visions would come oozing into my skull, terrifying me so badly I’d physically jerk up off the sofa and stare wildly around me.

At last I grabbed my clothes, took a carving knife from the kitchen, snatched up the car keys, and drove out to that house. I don’t know what made me do that, it was like I was being compelled – all I knew was that I had to get back to that house, to that basement - I had to carry on watching that show, and I vaguely remember Jessie screaming at me as I left the house. She must have thought I was nuts.

I had a spare set of keys so I parked a little way down the road from the house, walking the rest of the way and letting myself in.

In the basement I switched the TV on and sat on the sofa. The room was almost entirely bare. The TV and the sofa were the only things left.

The gameshow was in full swing. The contestants looked even more surreal than they did this morning, if that was humanly possible, exaggerated features, bizarre mannerisms, several of them resembling human/animal hybrids, one man with a left eye that bulged hideously out of its socket, a woman with only half a head, the other half lost to some gruesome accident, and there was a tall, thin guy with boils swarming his face that regularly burst open and leaked puss.

The games were just as extreme as before. One game required the contestants to eat live maggots out of plastic buckets, another had them tip-toeing across a floor covered in primed bear traps, whilst a third game forced them to negotiate a primary-coloured room filled with an assortment of lethal-looking booby-traps.

I tried to convince myself that no real blood was being shed, that the lady with the missing nose wasn’t really decapitated in the third elimination round, or the guy with the muzzle-shaped mouth didn’t really lose a leg, but Jesus, it all looked so real, and the audience was baying for blood, Mr Pontiac screaming with laughter every time someone suffered an injury, or howling with rage every time they made it safely through a round, and I found myself screaming and howling along with him because the game was everything, because the game was the only thing.

Slowly but surely, I began to realise that the contestants were all dead. That this was some kind of horrific afterlife, and that the two Mr Pontiacs were aspects of the same demonic entity.

But I couldn’t tear myself away, I felt like my soul was slowly being sucked into that game, I couldn’t remember who I was before I started watching, and it seemed my every waking hour since birth had been consumed by it.

‘Yes, Sir-eeee,’ Mr Pontiac shrieked at me out of the television set, ‘you ready to come on over to our side of the screen, Nicky boy, play for some real stakes, hmmm?’

‘Come on, Nicky boy,’ the audience roared.

‘…All you got to do is man-up and end your miserable life,’ Mr Pontiac drew his thumb across his throat in a sudden slicing gesture, ‘it’ll be over in a second, and boy, have we got games for you….’

‘Man-up, Nick!’ the audience thundered.

‘Take your life,’ Mr Pontiac suggested, ‘take your girlfriends’ while you’re at it, she’ll thank you for it….’

It made sense.

I held the knife I’d brought with me, turning it over and over in my hand. Christ, it all made so much sense.

The game had no beginning and no end.

The game was all there was.

…And all there would ever be.

I raised the knife to my throat, grinning as the audience chanted: “man-up, Nicky-boy!”

A shadow fell across the room as someone stepped between me and the television set and suddenly the screen was shattered by a heavy blow.

Instantly I was on the ground, flailing about and gasping for breath. I felt as though I’d been drowning and someone had reached down and dragged me out of the water at the very last moment.

When I’d sufficiently recovered I looked up to see Scott standing in the basement, staring down at me with a workman’s mallet in one hand.

‘What the fuck were you up to?’ he demanded.

‘How did you know I was here?’

‘Jessie called me,’ he said, ‘told me you left the apartment with a knife, yelling something about the basement,’ he shrugged, ‘so I figured you must have been coming here.’

He crouched down beside me and once again he asked what I’d been up to.

I stared at the destroyed television set, a gaping hole where the screen had been.

‘Did you see it?’ I demanded, ‘did you see the gameshow?’

He shook his head. He told me that he’d seen me through the basement window. I was sitting on the sofa, hunched over with my hands clasped together, laughing and cackling and cheering at the top of my voice, completely entranced by the television set –

Strange thing was, Scott said, the set wasn’t even switched on.

NoSleepInterviews: Community Questions for Human_Gravy! NoSleepOOC

On this episode of NoSlurpIntestines, we're teaching you how to make homemade /u/Human_Gravy from scratch!

You'll need the following ingredients:

A meat popsicle

Horror d'Oeuvres

Pistachios

Sage advice for newcomers

A well seasoned arsenal of masturbation jokes

Stir enthusiastically, with sensuous hip gyrations

Drizzle lightly on oven roasted human, and mashed potatoes

The mighty and noble Human Gravy is a former ruler of these parts, who spent his days issuing royal decrees such as The Three Lessons I Learned Pursuing A Career in Psychology, helping the populace with important matters like The Journal in Storage Unit 25, and beheading those who wronged him and his fellow members of parliament, then covering up their dastardly deeds. Though he's since moved on to ruling shorter, scarier pastures, he's still a beloved and savory delicacy in this community, and now's your chance to ask him all the slowly congealing inquiries spoiling in the refrigerator of your mind!

We're accepting all inquiries, whether they be about if "Human Gravy" is actually a euphemism, or which animal he would change into first if he were a character in the Animorphs series, but we'll write a dirty limerick using your name on a public bathroom wall if you ask him questions about NoSleep, ShortScaryStories, writing, or horror.

In the interest of being concise, we unfortunately may not be able to include all questions asked in the final interview, but don't look so glum, little plum - Gravy will also be doing a LIVE AMA in the official OOC chat Thursday, February 2nd from 5-7pm EST! To ensure questions are asked and answered in an orderly fashion, inquiries will be submitted by entering the IRC and private messaging them to cmd102. All questions will be asked if time permits.

Tune back in to /r/NoSleepInterviews Monday, January 30th to see him perform the entire soundtrack of Hamilton by memory! In the meantime, get better acquainted with him on Facebook, Wordpress, Twitter, and Goodreads, or purchase the phenomenal brand spankin' new anthology Horror d'Oeuvres featuring writers from NoSleep and /r/ShortScaryStories!

Grandma's House NoSleepOOC

So, I was “summoned” to my grandmother’s house for the weekend. Summoned. That’s sort of how things work in my family. You don’t visit, you don’t drop by; you’re summoned. My grandmother is a schizophrenic and, quite literally, a rainbow short of a 48 crayon box. I grew up looking for angel’s spot-lights on the wall because of this woman.

I was summoned to this woman’s house to clean her kitchen because, not only could she not take care of herself, she also couldn’t take care of her kitchen. Someone had to clean the burst fruit jar remnants off the ceiling, someone had to mop the weird crud off of the floor, and someone had to clean the molded detritus out of the refrigerator. Being the 2nd oldest, capable adult, out of all the grandkids, I was summoned. Probably had a lot to do with the fact that I was the oldest, capable female but we’ll just leave that dog where it lies.

I went on Friday and did the rote “How are you” and “How have you been holding up”. I asked about the food, the weather, the mangy dog she refused to bring inside or care for but wouldn’t give to a good home. Miniature poodle, gunk so thick I’m surprised that it could see, bone-thin and vicious as a coyote. Looking back: I’m sure it was hungry but I didn’t think that, then.

One thing that I noticed, while I was there… I never felt completely alone. This was the same house that my great-grandmother had inhabited so I was somewhat familiar with it’s layout. I knew which corners we’d have to place our noses in, which rooms held the belts for the beatings (garage not withstanding), which part of the carpet we’d have our faces shoved into for not knowing what “sit on the davenport” meant. I knew the closet you’d get locked in if you didn’t follow the rules that were randomly created in great-grandma’s mind. I can still feel my scalp burning from when she pulled me off of my bike by my hair for playing with the girl down the street. I guess I should have known that you can never be completely alone in great-grandma’s house.

Great grandma didn’t die there but she sure left some memories. It was hard to go there; when she was alive and after. There was always this eerie feeling of being watched. Especially in the backyard and near the shed. I don’t recall the neighbors but I know that the one on the right made things particularly eerie when playing in the back yard. We’d be playing tag or ring-around-the-rosie and we’d get this weird feeling from the right side fence.

Great grandma had that shed locked up tight with an industrial looking padlock so there was no way we would go snooping in there. Everytime we’d get near it, a shadow would seem to fall on us from that side of the fence. We’d glance over, in our innocence, and see nothing but a looming shadow and hear the breathing that only our heaviest of step-dads could achieve. After a few times of that, we gave up going near that shed. We didn’t like the noises that came out of it. The neighbor never, ever spoke to us and we never saw him when playing in the street. Not in person. Not on his front porch. Not checking the mail. The man never came outside but we knew he was there.

Back to the here and now. I’ve been tasked with cleaning up this “home of heritage”. We’re native to the US so we take care of our own. If anyone is going to raise someone that is born into our tribe, we raise them. If someone in the tribe needs help, we help them. If someone loses their shit and needs their house cleaned on a regular basis to ensure that the “white man” doesn’t wreak havoc, someone is summoned. Here I am; and there I was, prepped for cleaning.

I kept wiping, scrubbing, spraying, wiping, scrubbing, spraying. All the while, hearing whimpers from that damned poodle hellion. I kept telling myself to ignore the dog and keep going. Eventually I would be done and Grandma’s home would be clean. Great grandma would be proud. The home would be livable and everyone could rest easy in knowing that a family member just took care of it.

Living room carpet is vacuumed and shampooed, ceramic, collectible pigs have been dusted (why they’re still here, I don’t know), candy dish has been refilled with that god-awful swirl candy shit that every old person just keeps on display for, perhaps, artistic reasons. And the sound is still there. The sound of that stupid, damn dog. The dog with it’s ribs showing, the pinkish-yellow crusts in the corners of it’s eyes, the yap that makes you grind your teeth. That stupid dog.

Well, I went out to get that dog and let it in. Only, I didn’t find the dog. I found that locked-up-tight shed wide open. I found that stupid dog, fleshed out in the entrance. There was nothing left but the fur and skin at the entrance. I’m not supposed to get picked up for another hour and grandma doesn’t have a phone. Too many emergency calls in the middle of the night got that “privilege” revoked since she can’t seem to keep her straight from the narrow.

I came back in to check on grandma but the only thing I’ve found in her bedroom is a bloody bathrobe. Her slippers aren’t here so I’m assuming she put them on. She was wearing some plain sweat pants and a comfy, oversize shirt. She keeps the bathrobe draped over the end of her bed for her showers. The bathroom door is closed and I think I hear some sounds coming from the hall where it’s located.

I’m too scared to hesitantly creep into the hallway. I’m actually terrified and legitimately thinking of jumping out of the bedroom window. …But the noises. They’re not normal. It sounds like someone is loudly chewing raw spaghetti noodles whilst dousing their mouth with marinara sauce.
I need to make sure that my grandma is okay because… Well, that would be expected of me but… well, I’m afraid.

It’s kind of quiet now.

I think I’ll try and sneak out of this room. I have to pass the bathroom, the guest room, the kitchen, and make it through the living room to get out the front door but it’s worth a shot.

I’ve opened the door a crack and I can see some liquid. Some pool of something creeping out from the open bathroom door. The house is silent. I’m going to try. I’m going to try to go as quietly as I can. Maybe on all fours. Yes. I think that’s the best. Just crawl on all fours and see if I can make it out.

Hmm…. This liquid from the bathroom seems kind of sticky. Sticky and dark. Umm.. I think there’s someone looking at me from the other side of the living room.

Please explain. Why this is "inappropriate"? NoSleepOOC

So I'm not that butt hurt that my short story was removed and I was threatened with a ban. I am just puzzled as to why. I had trigger warnings. I originally posted the story as The Watchers and it was removed because the narrator died. I forgot that rule. So I made sure I followed all of them with new tweaks and endings.

I honestly just want to know. A mod ruined the narrative flow of my first story The Last Fourth of July by deleted sections of the story. My publisher told me to take it down from Reddit so I'm over that. It's just weird. I read some of the other NSFW stories and they went beyond anything in my short story. I'm really limited in what I can write, I'm no good at making a "weird thing that happened at my job" story. Or yet another "Found journal" tale. Story below.

NSFWr/nosleepRemoved | Inappropriate They Wait u/Xerede16h

Today I let my alarm go off for two hours. A new world record. I laid in bed with a full bladder and a severe case of crotch rotch. You know that perfect equilibrium of musk and stank that men accumulates, by not bathing. I laid there in my filth, just listening to my phones ringtone which sounds like a nuclear launch is imminent. Yep, two hours is my limit.

The trifecta of stank, having to piss, and the migraine that baked to the sound of my alarm ringing got me out of bed. I almost broke my phone into pieces. Would have too if I didn't have to run to the toilet.

Afterwards I took what had to be my first shower in weeks. Just like I did the last time I cleaned myself, I fell to my knees and wept. I didn’t have to look up. Through the steam and shower curtain I could feel her tiny eye watching me. Always watching. I stood up and screamed. “Say something!”

Of course, only silence was returned. I turned the shower off and numbly stepped out. I almost slipped on the wet, dirty linoleum. I braced myself with the sink. I reached over and grabbed the cleanest looking towel from a hanging shelf. The girl didn’t move as my arm had to pass through her head to grab the towel.

As always I got the cold chills, like placing a wet arm through a deep freezer. Her lone eye followed me as I left the bathroom. I changed into red jogging pants and a green sweater. My last two remaining pieces of clean clothes. I looked around my filthy home. It was just a matter of time before I lose this palatial house. I haven’t paid my mortgage in the last six months.

I thought back to my wife walking through the empty rooms, waving her arms around, planning where she would hang this painting, where she would place the credenza. The other couples at the open house were giving us the evil eye. No matter we laughed. We knew this house would be ours. After all, we were putting down half the asking price for the six bedroom Victorian style three story. It was once so full of warmth and happiness. Now it was silent as a tomb. And just as filled with dead things.

I opened the refrigerator, the old woman with the half burned face was waiting inside. No matter how many times I see the old bat I still yelped and jumped out of my socks. “God damnit!” I grunted as I reached for one of the cartons of milk that was only lightly expired. I slammed the refrigerator door on her. I glanced at the wall clock.

It was almost 3 P.M. My wife would soon make her appearance. I sighed as I made a bowl of Frosted Flakes. I flicked a few moldy pieces out of my bowl and ate. I thought about my finances. My savings has been depleted for a week now. For the first time in my adult life, I had no income coming. My mother had carefully broached the subject about money. She told me it was time to move on and that I should finally file my insurance claim.

I turned to the refrigerator. The unsigned document hung by a small magnet. The magnet was a circle picture of my two boys. Taken on a field trip to the Smithsonian. They both smiled at me from the picture. Those faces had so much hope and dreams in them. I picked the magnet up, letting the document fall and spread out on the floor. I cupped their tiny faces in my palm and placed it over my heart. I opened my hand and looked at their faces again.

Tears welled in my eyes. I knew that when I look up I will see their grotesque, swollen and knotted faces staring at me. I sighed and placed the magnet back. I picked the document up and walked past my two sons, as they stood hand and hand in front of the dining table. Blood had already starting to pool around their feet. I walked back to my bedroom. The little girl who always waits in my bathroom had actually stepped out into the hallway. Our eyes locked. Well I should say my eyes locked into her eye. Her left one was hanging by a bloody vein. It gently swayed in a breeze that didn’t exist. “This is a first. Will you always wait in the hallway? Because that would just be great for my bowel movements!”

Expecting no, and not getting one I closed my bedroom door and slumped back into bed. At the foot of my bed stood Angry Black. Well that is what I call him. I know that is racist but I didn’t know how else to refer to him. It wasn’t like he would ever tell me my name. And I have had people stand next to him, I have tried to take his picture and video record him. Nothing. No one can see him and his picture cannot be taken. So Angry Black is his name. Out of all the apparitions, he was the only one who showed any emotions. It was Angry Black that I communicated with the most. I would tell him about my nightmares and what new kind of drink I would make.

Angry Black as always, stood there seething at me silently. He was tall with a bald head and a goatee. I can tell in life he was considered very handsome. He was also the most put together apparition. With only a lightning bolt crack running down the front of his head. You can barely see his brain. His mouth was pulled back in an angry sneer. I looked at him thoughtfully.

“What are you saying to me now Angry Black? Are you cursing at me for not calling a taxi? For closing my eyes for a split second?” Do you curse at me for taking away your loved ones? Which ghost is it? The Asian child in my hallway? The old lady in the kitchen? The tall blond lady in my garage? Or maybe you hate me because your loved ones is still alive. But you’re stuck here with me.” I reached for the glass on the small table next to the bed. I practically inhaled the last of my Scotch.

I cursed. I would have to leave the house to buy more drinks. Maybe even get some food and laundry detergent this time. I instantly remembered my money issue. The issue being I don’t have any more. I placed the empty glass down and picked up the insurance paper. I have read it over a thousand times. Still, my eyes go to the same paragraph, ‘By signing this agreement, you are hereby absolving B.M.W. of any responsibility and fault to include any future judgment and/or settlements’ I picked a pen up. I hovered over the signature line. I dropped the pen and cursed again.

“Absolve!” I rolled my eyes. I looked at Angry Black. He was pointing at me this time. “I should be in jail, Angry Black.” My mother made sure that didn’t happen. Even after I cried into her lap like a child and blubbered how my carelessness took 7 innocent lives. She slapped me and told me that no son of hers will ever go to jail. She used the lawyers from our company. They went after the car manufactures, the emergency responders even the families of the victims. All to ensure that no Hamilton will ever have to spend not even 1 day, answering for their crimes.

It was three o’clock now. Time to see my wife. I left the bedroom. Angry Black silently stabbed daggers into me with his eyes. I walked downstairs. The winding staircase presented the double doors of the front entrance. She was standing there of course. Her hair was greasy with blood. The impact of the crash dented the front of her face. A jagged tooth was pushed out through one of her cheeks. “Hi baby.” I quietly greeted her. As she always did she had her eyes folded over her chest. As if she was hiding some great secret from me. I sat on the stairs and watched her. She swayed back and forth on the balls of her feet. Much like she would do in life. Especially if music was playing. No matter what she was doing, she would sway to any music unconsciously.

I reached into my pocket and pulled my phone out. I thumped through an app and select it to play music downstairs. Radiohead started to pulsate out from the tiny almost hidden speakers in the corner of the walls. It was her favorite. Even if she could smile in response her face was warped and bloody. Pieces of her tongue littered her neck. I cried again. “Glenda, I don’t think I can take it anymore. I know a price must be paid. I know what I have done. I deserve this and more. I am too much of a coward to end it. If I know you would be waiting for me on the other side with the kids, I would…” I paused. In my other pocket just like always was the small snub nose pistol that I inherited from my grandfather.

I have had the barrel against my head, in my mouth, and under my chin too many times. I pulled it out. “Just nod or shake your head. Wink to me. Give me any indications that this is what you want!” I pleaded. She swayed silently holding her hands against her chest. I dropped the gun. As always nothing. Soon she would disappear. She was the only one who appeared and disappeared in regular intervals. Even her deformed and bloody form was my only sliver of happiness each day. She started to fade away.

I ran to her. My hand passed through her shoulders. “Glenda! Please! Give me some indication. Talk to me! I would willing go to hell right now if I could be with you and the boys!” I screamed in frustration at her silence. A trickle of blood and teeth fragments drippled down her sideways mouth. I dropped my hands to my side and sighed. She stop swaying back and forth. I froze. This was a new movement from her. Just like the Asian girl in the bathroom, something different was happening today! “Glenda! What is it! Show me! Tell me! Please!” She opened her hands. I gasped as I looked down.

She held a bloody bean in her hand. No. No, God, no! Tiny black stalks of eyes protruded from its tiny head. I backed away. She looked up at me, extended both hands out as if presenting a gift to me. I screamed. She took a step forward. I backed into the steps my hands brushing the cold steel of the gun. I pointed it at her as she took another step towards me. The small form in her hands twitched. I killed 8 people! There are prolific serial killers who haven’t taken as many lives as I have. I pointed the gun at her. “God damnit! Stay away from me Glenda!” Why wouldn’t she disappearing as she usually does?

I squeezed three shots off. The glass on the doors broke as the bullets passed through her. She continued to approach me. She leaned down towards me as if I was to pick up the small chunk of our child. No! I screamed again. This time I didn’t hesitate, I didn’t overthink it, I didn’t try to fight. I squeezed the trigger as hard as I could! The trigger didn’t budge! I stared dumfounded into the barrel.

I aimed at my wife again. Two shots rang out destroying the last of the door’s glass paneling. She was leaning so close to me that I could smell her breath. It had the copper stench of blood and burning rubber. I am in hell! I dropped the now empty and smoking gun onto the floor. I could not take my eyes off the small wiggling form in her hands. I started to scream again.

“Dude shut the fuck up!” My bunkmate accented this by punching the bottom of my mattress. My kidney throbbed, Simon hits hard. Indeed, I know that well. “S.s.sorry.” I stammered. “I had another…”

“Yeah, yeah another nightmare. You need to get over it or I’m going to fucking beat you death one day.” He sneered. I sat up still massaging my side. “You don’t understand I just found out…”

“Yeah I know that too. I read our mail. Your old lady moved on and married some nigger and now she is carrying his baby, cry me a fucking river. Did you expect her to wait 15 years for your sorry drunk driving ass?”

I stiffened. Simon called it our mail because everything that is mines belongs to him. I balled my fist up. I choke back the urge to jump off the bed and attack him. I swallowed and held back a sob. No sense spending two weeks in the ER.

“Sorry for waking you, sir.” I seethed in my words. Simon either didn’t notice or didn’t care.

“Well now that I’m awoke, I have another use for that mouth besides screaming. Get down here.” He commanded.

I looked out towards the hallway. No guards in sight. Tears rolled down my eyes. I slowly slid from the top bunk. Simon put his hands behind his head and smiled. If only I was brave enough to bash his teeth in. If only I was brave enough to pull the trigger. I had 4984 days left in hell. All I can do is wait.

The End

Just Another Ordinary Day NoSleepOOC

The alarm goes off at 7 AM. I don’t feel like getting up, but I have to. I carefully reach across to shut off the alarm, and watch my fingers. I then jump off the bed, rush out of the bedroom, and close the door. The thing that lives below can’t open doors. I tried getting rid of it, but I’ve learned to just live with it.

I go to take a shower, and turn on the cold water. It’s freezing, but I can manage. Ever since the spiders moved into the water heater, I haven’t been able to use it at all. I step out of the shower and dry off, careful not to glance at the mirror. I tried to take it down once, but it came back the next day, so I’ve learned to just live with it.

Breakfast. I get out the bowls, and fill them with cereal. I set one on the table for myself, and bring the other to the basement for the skinless man who refused to leave. He gives me a thumbs up as I head back up the stairs. The monolithic refrigerator stands ominously, and I can just make out a voice asking me to eat what’s inside. I once tried taking it to the dump, but it appeared where it always was when I came back, so I’ve learned to just live with it.

Heading to the driveway, the car revs its motor at me. As I start to head out on my motorcycle, I open the garage door. Maybe this time it won’t kill as many people. I once sent it to demolition derby, but it destroyed the entire arena, so I’ve learned to just live with it.

On my way to work, I spot a tall faceless man standing under a tree. He’s been around for as long as I can remember, teleporting wherever he wants. When I stop at a traffic light, I hear some noises in the truck behind me. I check my belt to make sure I remembered my gun, and luckily I did. I still remember when my mom first gave it to me, on the day my brother went psycho. Nothing brings a family together quite like shooting your crazy, knife-wielding brother to death. It used to tear me up inside every day, but I’ve learned to just live with it.

Arriving at the office building, I spot a giant sinkhole across the street where the Starbucks used to be. Guess I’ll be getting my coffee from somewhere else now. Walking in the door, there’s a broadcast on the television about the giant monster in California. I stick around long enough to see if it’s coming our way, but it looks like it’ll be going back underground pretty soon. I think back to the night a giant tardigrade destroyed my city block when I was a kid. It used to terrify me constantly, but I’ve learned to just live with it.

The boss calls me into her office. I try not to make contact with her eight-thousand eyes. She says I’m being moved to accounting, something about a memetic photo killing my coworkers. I’m glad I didn’t open that e-mail from a few days ago. I had a friend in high school who made the same mistake. He passed the image to me, and we had to pay thousands of dollars to get the memory removed. Sometimes people ask me about the scar, something else I’ve learned to just live with.

At lunch, I overhear some of my coworkers talking about going to an abandoned amusement park. I’m almost tempted to try to talk them out of it, but I realized that then they’d just get themselves killed some other way. I sip coffee while I read the newspaper headline. Someone else had their spleen stolen while they slept. Ever since the discovery of the dark arts, organ theft has become a booming market. I even participated in it myself some after I finished high school. I still have my next-door neighbors right eye. I considered getting rid of it when it started following me, but I’ve learned to just live with it.

After work, I take a stop at the supermarket. There’s a guy out front trying to scam people. He tries to sell me pills to increase my muscle mass, but I politely decline. I head down to the meat isle, and pass a pale humanoid thing staring hungrily at a turkey. I ignore him as I grab bags of chicken. As I start heading toward the produce section, I notice that he’s started following me. I ask the store employees to keep an eye on him, and they agree to in exchange for some of my blood. Y’know, I think I’ve seen that thing before. Yeah, he’s the one that tried to bite off my hand that one time. Restraining orders don’t work on pale thin humanoids, so I’ve learned to just live with them.

Heading home, I hear police sirens. I see my car cannibalizing another car. I try to block out the sounds of the people inside it screaming for their lives. I think my car noticed me, but it doesn’t pay any heed. Continuing onwards, I pass a boarded-up arcade. I remember going there when I was a kid, before they found out that most of the games were haunted. It’s sad to see something like that happen, but I’ve learned to just live with it.

I put the groceries in the icebox out back. The refrigerator knows what I’m doing, and moans jealously. I bring it a piece of chicken so it doesn’t feel left out. I say goodnight to the skinless man, and start heading to bed. I make sure the closet door is locked, and that the trap under my bed is set. I carefully set the alarm, keeping a close eye on the shadow standing over me. I put the covers over my face, and try to ignore the scratching coming from my closet. It used to keep me up all night, but since I couldn’t kill the undead demon inside, I’ve learned to just live with it.

As I drift off to sleep, I hope my dreams will be at least somewhat pleasant. But, as always, I end up in a bloody landscape with a towering figure made of bones watching me. Looking around, I see everyone else in town is there too. I sigh, get down on my knees, and plead to the evil god to spare me just one more day. I wish things didn’t have to be this way, that I didn’t have to just live with it. But, nobody can do anything about it. All we can do is learn to just live with it, along with everything else. Tomorrow will be another day of living with it.
