Theory Crafting: Should Minecraft have an Icebox Block? Minecraft

I was starting to craft this comment on a different post, but it got to be a pretty cool idea that I felt I should share with other people so they could bounce off my ideas and contribute new ones to make something pretty cool. Basically someone said that a refrigerator block would be useless because food doesn't decay. They're right of course - it doesn't. But what if it did?

Where other people see refrigeration as useless, I see an idea. Maybe it would be a cool addition to the harder difficulty modes to make food decay, and thus require you to create something like an icebox if you want to keep more than simple produce. Maybe something like after 2 minecraft weeks, things like Melon/Carrots/etc. "go bad" and no longer provide you any benefit - something similar to the poison potato now, except inevitable. Things that give you more benefit (cooked chicken, steak, pork) would go bad even faster perhaps after only one or two minecraft days, just like in real life. Really hard to get things things like golden apples/cake would never go bad because of preservatives. If you want to extend the shelf life of your food, you have to put it into an icebox.

Here are some reasons why it is a cool idea:

  1. People like realism in survival mods. I have lots of friends who will add Hunger and Thirst mods to Skyrim and other games because they make them more difficult. Minecraft already has hunger as a mechanic, but right now it's not very realistic and you don't really have to worry about it much after day 6 or so once you have a sizable farm. Adding a food spoiling mechanic would require people to actually pay attention to their farming rather than it being just a once-a-week clean up kind of ordeal when you run out of bread.

  2. It encourages exploration, because if people want their food to last longer, they need to go find a Taiga biome/Tundra/Extreme Hills where they can collect some snow and ice, much like how they need to look for coal or lava if they want to power their furnaces without using up all of their wood.

  3. It brings usefulness and mechanics to otherwise rarely used items. Aside from building an igloo or using it as decoration on certain builds, most people don't use ice or snow for much. There are a couple cool traps that use it too (slippery floor traps where mobs are pushed by snow golems) but their usefulness is very limited. If this was instituted, suddenly snow becomes a useful resource.

  4. Snow biomes have been historically unloved by the minecraft community. They are boring and annoying, because aside from getting some spruce wood there's really no reason to ever be in one other than aesthetics. Now, suddenly, everyone is going to want a Taiga biome so they can keep their food cold.

  5. Ice boxes, rather than fridges, stay fairly true to minecraft's theme, especially if you make them aesthetically similar to some of the older style ones, which are literally just boxes with ice and food inside.

  6. It would also bring usefulness to the food items people don't care about. When was the last time you ate a carrot? It's probably been awhile since after awhile all people ever eat is steak. But if you need ice/snow to keep them from spoiling, suddenly those other foods have a use. Haven't found an snowy biome yet? You'll probably be eating a lot more bread and veggies.

So here's a tl;dr of what I've got so far; feel free to add ideas onto this and maybe we'll end up with something really cool:

  • Food on harder difficulties (Hard / Hardcore / Maybe normal as well) will spoil after a certain time.
  • Different foods will have different spoiling rates based on their usefulness / similar spoiling rate in real life
  • Carrots/Potatoes/Beetroot/Melon will spoil after 1 - 2 minecraft weeks
  • Meats/Fish will spoil after 1 - 3 minecraft days, perhaps randomly, or based on their stamina refill.
  • Golden Carrots/Golden Apples/Cake don't spoil.
  • There will be a new block called an Icebox.
  • It will be crafted with 8 iron ingots around a block of snow.
  • It will have a 9 block square of inventory space, much like a dispenser would.
  • It will have a block of inventory space for fuel, which will be of the form of different types of snow or ice, much like a furnace.
  • I'm thinking something like one snowball would give you 1/32 of a minecraft day of refrigeration, a snow block would give you 1/8, and an ice block would give you 1/2 day, but those might be too big or too small (hard to know until it's playtested).

My Thoughts on Donators Minecraft

Hello, now this is a small rant about server donators. Such as Mineplex Donators, Creative server donators, etc.

I've had experiences on many different servers with donators, there's alot of donators who usually, ignore people.

Which people exactly?

Non-Donators. and Lower donators.

Let's say, a non donator tries to ask a donator a question, what does the donator do? Ignores the question.

I've been on many servers to know this.

It mostly occurs on OP Prisons (popular ones), Creative servers, And other popular minigame servers. now, Hypixel, it's a very good community. All the donators are respectful.

You can say I'm lying or it's not true, but you have to pay attention to the chat inorder to look and witness it.

Basically, When donators buy a rank, it gives the donator power in the server, such as /fly, /nick, etc. But to the actual person who donated, it's much more. They think they're always better then the lower players, but in reality, every single player is like them, and the donators should treat the lower/non donators equal.

I was on this server called Arkham Network, on the creative server. tons of donators were on, I simply said like 2 chat messages, and all they did was ignore it. One player named AddedSugarYT actually tried to make fun of my name. by saying "Soda has added sugar" I can see the little joke about that, but in my eyes, that's sort of disrespect.

AddedSugar also tried to put little insults/burns, such as "Soda, go back to your refrigerator!" or something like that.

Anyway, this was my little rant on Donators.

What I basically tried to say is:

Every donator needs to treat non-donators or lower donators the same as every other donator they talk to, because you don't know when a player needs some help and tries to ask a donator for help, Some communities of servers are like this, 50 to 60% of it. It's like an ongoing cycle on every server > "Donator = Ignore the people who are lower then you, because you are better" - And that is NOT true. what so ever. nobody is better then anyone, we're all equal and should be treated like normal players.

A tale of hard work, dedication, a terrible decision, and the destruction of an entire world. Minecraft can be a cruel mistress. Minecraft

Come, fellow adventurers, and let me tell you the tale of one man's attempt to re-create a place of power elsewhere, and end with a journey into madness and the beginning of Armageddon itself.

I love my house. It is my fortress, it is my safe place, it is a three bedroom paradise that I share with my cats. I had decided that I would immortalize it in everyone's favorite world, the Minecraft plane. I would make a safe place free from zombies, creepers, Endermen, and skeletons. I hate those guys.

So I began to build. I started with the foundation, a brick foundation built with love and care. The ground inside was made up of pure Mycelium, as all my water pipes are down there and water collects there, and since there's low light, it's a perfect spot. And yes, I do find mushrooms down there when i'm fixing a leak.

Next up was the stairs. Since this world does not possess concrete, I had to use Quartz to get the color slightly right. I have stairs on my front and back doors, as my house is roughly eight feet off the ground. This took some scaling.

I followed this with the "ground" floor, covered in tacky brown carpeting because my house was renovated in the 60's and since there is no damage to the wood underneath I had no reason to pull it all up. The floor is a dark oak. I painstakingly created each room according to the closest specifications I could, including the cubby hole where my water heater is stored next to my refrigerator.

What followed were the walls, oak and lovely. Then the ceiling, which was composed of quartz as well. The roof was hardened black clay. I put redstone lamps in the ceiling to simulate lights. The doors, one was the standard wood, and one was an iron door. (My front door is actually made of steel with a fake wood look to it.) The inside doors were all standard, as well.

Next up, the furniture. I looked up guides on how to make modern furniture and recreated it as painstakingly as I could. Some things were not to scale, but I did my best.

Finally, came the outside fence. I used iron gates, which is the closest thing to my actual fence, which is chain link. I wish they had put in an iron gate. I even put in a garden where I usually plant tomatoes. I put potatoes there instead.

All in all, this took about six real hours of work, sweat and tears to put together. I was proud of what i'd built. I finally had a decent home to call my own! So I set my spawn point to the front room of the house, walked out my front gate, and went on an adventure! I spent about thirty minutes doing some rural exploration, admiring the world.

Then I made the grievous mistake of attempting to return to spawn.

Despite the fact this was a world of my own creation in Single Player, I had forgotten how to return to spawn. I tried looking in the Help files, to no avail. I tried multiple iterations of /tp and /spawn, until I typed the worst thing I could've typed.

/setspawnpoint.

I had reset my spawn to goodness knows where, in the middle of absolutely nothing. No big deal, i'll just consult my...

Trusty...

Map...

That I never bothered to check until now, and is currently only showing my present location.

Okay, so i'm an idiot, no big deal. I'll just backtrack and find my way home myself!

So I traveled, looking for landmarks I could identify, only i'm terrible with landmarks. I ended up going in random directions, asking nearby sheep for help. I even found a village and asked them for help in return for turning their gravel walkways into stone brick. They were not helpful. So I would continue to wander, looking for the Mycelium-covered forest that bordered my home.

I was slowly but surely going mad, and delirious from my travels, until the unthinkable happened.

I went too far.

I came over a mountain top...and the entire world crashed.

All of Minecraft crashed.

The save file would automatically crash upon opening, thus crashing the game.

In trying to return home, I had destroyed an entire world.

So now I sit, without any screenshots of my beautiful creation, no clue where it is, and no way to go back in to find it.

I hope you folks enjoyed this cautionary tale, as a reminder that no matter how prepared you think you are, do not wander too far without writing down your coordinates or you're in deep trouble.

Thank you for listening to my tale. Now let's go back inside before the campfire draws skeletons. Seriously, fuck those guys.
