My mom is looking to remodel/upgrade her kitchen InteriorDesign

My parents’ house was built in the 70s. The kitchen is quite small, so she’s probably looking for ideas on how to make it appear larger. I know that she wants to upgrade the original cabinets that came with the house. Probably the countertops as well. She also mentioned knocking out the partial wall that divides the dining area from the kitchen. I don’t think it has a structural purpose. She also mentioned getting a new refrigerator. The wooden floor in the dining area is relatively new. Idk if she wants a new kitchen floor, but right now it’s just one of those roll up Linoleum things.

Looking for help with my kitchen layout InteriorDesign

We're in the process of a major renovation and looking for help/guidance with out kitchen layout. We want to have an informal eating area, but have no idea how to structure the island to promote that.

Also, we're struggling with where to put our main parts of the kitchen triangle (sink, stove, refrigerator).

What to do with this ugly wall!? InteriorDesign

Hello guys! I'm in a process to close on a house for my family and I. We love the house but it need some serious remodeling. One of my objectives was to address the wall that divide the kitchen and living room. I personally don't know if I should take it off completely, partially, or leave it as is. Any advice would greatly be appreciated.

Note: I was thinking of swapping the refrigerator and stove placement but than I wouldn't have a microwave?

Need help with planning kitchen/dining space in new apartment InteriorDesign

I just moved into a new place that has much less cabinet space than my old apartment, and without any built-in dining area (my last place had an island). Here is a link to photos. Since I just moved, a lot of my storage is temporary, so for the purposes of this you can ignore anything in the photos that isn't built in.

Currently, I'm in the awkward position where I need to buy a few furniture items so that I have:

• a place to eat (I have 2 counter height bar stools, so would need a pub height table)
• a place to store what I eat (a pantry space); and
• more drawer space to store miscellaneous kitchen items and my silverware.

I'd also like to have some kind of functional entryway where I can hang my keys, purse, etc.

I'm a bit lost trying to figure out how to arrange this space. A few ideas I've had are to:

1. Find a standalone island like this one.
2. Buy a small cabinet for next to the refrigerator to act as a pantry, and then have a separate pub table/chairs, and have a console table by the entryway.
3. Get something like the Norberg table from Ikea to put next to the entry door with hooks above it, and then get a separate pantry cabinet. My thoughts were that this might keep the floor plan a bit more open.

This is the first time I've run into this kind of storage and functionality problem, and space planning doesn't come very intuitively to me.

I don't want to spend a lot of money or time buying and assembling furniture that ultimately doesn't look good and work well, so any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated!

Kitchen redesign, where to start, the good bad and the ugly InteriorDesign

I could definitely use some advice on the kitchen of the house I've just purchased, my first! Some days I walk in and just get so frustrated at how it looks, I could definitely use some advice based on my thinking so far. Tips on little things to get started on, before moving on to bigger rehab work.

Firstly, I hate almost everything about my cabinets. The height of the cabinets is what really makes me cringe right off the bat. Looking online at house pictures is kind of like watching porn - excuse the crude reference... it sets me up for an unrealistic expectation of what a home should look like - Because those pictures depict million dollar homes with professional designers. Hat being said, almost every kitchen photo I look at has cabinets that reach the ceiling - either with molding and spacers or they are built that way. There is 23 inches between the top of these cabinets and the ceiling.

The second thing that I'm not happy with is the layout of the appliances. As you can see in the photos, the refrigerator is just free standing on its own. I like the look of a built in, unified kitchen, definitely not the fridge sitting in what looks like an addition. I also think that the stove and the dishwasher are where the other should be. Dishwasher next to the sink - stove with counter space on either side for working.

Then there's that other cabinet just floating in the "dining room". I think that area will be converted into a small bar down the line.

Back to the main cabinets, I have thought of painting them white to give them a more updated look. But what about the space between the cabinets and the floor? And the end of the cabinet by the basement door there. It looks like they only finished the job to 85%. There's no detail work. I feel like this whole kitchen lacks polish or depth.

Any thoughts, small or large would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Anyone wanna help me remodel my kitchen? InteriorDesign

So my wife and I want to redo our kitchen this coming year. We love our little house, but the kitchen is TINY, and when we moved in earlier this year, we promised each other that redoing the kitchen (and enlarging it if possible) was going to be high on our list of projects.

So, basically we want to knock out that wall where the stove/refrigerator is and expand the kitchen into what's now a formal dining room that never gets used. The wish list is for an island with built-in range/oven to live in that area where the wall is now, and maybe an eat-in nook or table or something so we can still have some surface area to sit down at if we choose.

Is there enough space for that in there? I don't want to expand the cramped kitchen and then crowd up all the space that results from that, ya know? Where the heck is the fridge gonna go? Can we get a little more countertop space out of this?

Here are the measurements of the full space, based on the last pic in the album:

Left wall: 10.5'
Right wall: 12' (that's just until you run into the "living area" space in the foreground of pic 4)
Bottom right wall: 8.75'

Can't come up with good kitchen layout (floor plan) InteriorDesign

We are doing a major remodel on an 1850 sq foot home. The kitchen is in a very large space, 13' by 19' 10". Unfortunately there are windows along the wall that completely block us from putting refrigerators, range hoods, double ovens, whatever up against it. I am strongly against changing the size of those windows because it would totally affect the facade of the house, but I am having a hell of a lot of trouble arranging the appliances to work with it.

We have separate fridge and freezer units, 32" wide each. Our double oven is standard about 30" wide and 53" tall. We also have a 48" rangetop.

Appreciate any help we can get as we are trying to get this plan squared away and finalized for submission to the city! I would like to add a walk in pantry somewhere if possible, just because the space is so large and it might be a good use of it.

We’ve started refinishing the cabinets (sanding/painting), ripped out the original (cracked and failing) tile floor, but we need to get our final footprint nailed down before we do much else. There is a lot of space to work with, but we haven’t found a plan that felt 100% right for the space.

The main issues we would like to address: Cook-top – I am not a big fan of the downdraft ventilation and also the constricted space on the right side burners due to the cabinet for the wall oven. Optimally, we would ditch the downdraft ventilation and go with a hood. The question is if we leave it in the current spot and deal with the tight access on the right side, or if we 1) move the cook-top to the new island and put in a hood over the island or 2) take out the wall oven/microwave area, add a hood and put in a range (oven/stove) with a small segment of counter between the range and the refrigerator.

Island – We would like to build a large rectangle island (all one height) for additional storage and also to possibly incorporate the eating area and get rid of the table in the “eating” portion of the room. Any “must have” ideas you would suggest for a new island? Any alternative shapes you would suggest? 2 islands vs. 1 due to the size of the space? The flooring in the kitchen is currently just subfloor, so it would be the time to run conduit/high voltage power for a cook-top/water and drain for prep sink/etc. although that also means $$$$.

We are located in the USA. We do a lot of DIY.

Looking for specific space saving design ideas in this ~400 sq ft open studio. InteriorDesign

We are looking for design layout help for a ~400 sq. ft. open layout studio to be turned into a year-round apartment. Here is the original post with pictures and layout. We want to keep as much of the open feel as possible while still providing a private shower/toilet. Things that are a must include as follows:
- toilet
- shower
- sink (bath area)
- Murphybed
- range
- oven
- sink (kitchen area)

- washer/dryer (stacking?)

Kitchen remodel help (AIC) InteriorDesign

Hello all,

Looking for some help with our proposed kitchen remodel. Here is the kitchen!

We are going to update the whole kitchen to include:

*Floor tile
*Granite counters
*Tile backsplash
*Sink
*Paint cabinets
*New island
*New stainless appliances (double ovens, cooktop, dishwasher, refrigerator)

However, there are a few sticking points where I would appreciate some advice:

1. Do not like the microwave over the cooktop. Current thought is to enlarge the island and build it in since we do not want it sitting on the counter.
2. Island: Bi-level or flat? We never keep stools behind it though when we entertain, we put nosh stuff up there.
3. Island: Since we never use stools, thinking about having the 24" deep base units on fridge side and 16" cabinet base where the current overhang is for more storage?
4. Vent hood: currently unsure if it is possible to externally vent a hood over the cooktop. Might be able to route duct up and on top of the upper cabinets to the outside wall and then cover with a frame and drywall it.
5. Half-wall: I would like to open it but wife likes it keeping the kitchen "in the kichen"?
6. Leaning heavily to wood-grain porcelain tile but are worried it may look tacky or just be a fad? Looking for color/size/shape tile help.
7. The wall with the large opening to the living room had textured wall-paper and we are thinking about replacing with another textured wallpaper to break up the expanse of wall? The old wallpaper has been removed and wall prepped and primed in the pictures.
8. Apron sink: Would like to have one but would then have to replace that base unit? Would a standard undermount be better?
9. Cabinet paint - Want something durable, thinking BM ADVANCE, ILVA 2k Poly, or INSL-X Cab Coat? Thoughts/experience with those?

Note: We can't afford to replace all the cabinets but may consider putting new doors on exisitng to match what will have to be new on the island doors.

Upgrade choices right now:

Blue Pearl 3cm granite
Silver travertine subway tile backsplash
BM Mascarpone for cabinets/trim
Marazzi American Estates wood grain (spice or natural)

Is it a good idea to get a 24 inch refrigerator and build new cabinets around it, if we were to sell within 5 years? InteriorDesign

We're closing on our first apartment, 1br in nyc . This will be a starter home and we're not looking to live for more than 5 years. Due to over all small kitchen size, we were thinking about a 24 inch fridge(link below) . [Request] Help me with my kitchen remodel? InteriorDesign

I purchased my house about 1.5 years ago. It's been a huge pain in the butt.

I want to sell it but need to make the kitchen look pretty nice for this neighborhood. I can't afford really nice (re: expensive) cabinetry so I'm trying to find some balance between aesthetics and cost. We installed some cheap cabinets from Home Depot but I (personally) am not a huge fan of them; I'm not sure how the rest of the world feels.

I played with Ikea's kitchen designer and tried to come up with an idea but it would cost an arm and a leg. I think I should down-size the number of cabinets I'm trying to use; especially back in the corner where there's both an electrical box and some plumbing running to a laundry room. I suppose I could turn that into a little breakfast nook or something.`

I can do things like basic framing, drywall, panting, baseboards, updating existing light fixtures, etc... I also plan on re-tiling (ceramic) the floor, unless I can figure out a way to avoid it.

Some specifications not listed in the floor plan photo:

• Refrigerator: 70" Height, 34" Depth, 37" Width
• Range/Oven: 30" Width, 30" Deep, 30" Height
• Dishwasher: 24" Width, 23.5" Deep (estimated), 33.5" Height

Moving living room to basement? InteriorDesign

I don't know if this is the right place for this. I figured it was worth a shot. I have a REALLY small kitchen. I find it very difficult to fit a small round table in it with refrigerator especially since I installed a dishwasher in the spot where the fridge USED to be. I really desire more cabinet space and more importantly countertop space but have no where to put it.

I was throwing around the idea of turning my current living room into more of a dining room and moving my living room down to the basement. The basement is currently "finished" but I want to knock out all the wood panel walls from the 70s, remove the asbestos tile ceiling and redo the whole thing more modern.

The only thing I am worried about with this idea would be the resale value of my home dropping. Would moving my living room to the basement and probably adding a bathroom down there as well hurt the value of the home? Other than having someone come in and extend the back of the house out (which would probably mean I would need to knock the garage down and build it farther back), I'm not sure what else to do except sell and move to another home.

About to remodel my kitchen. Could use some help/critique (Photos inside) InteriorDesign

I'm actually remodeling my entire apartment. Just to give you an idea, here's what I have planned so far in the kitchen...

Layout: 1, 2, 3, 4.

Flooring: Italian porcelain tile throughout the apartment: 1, 2.

Cabinets I'm looking at either Ikea Brokhult, or Semi-Handmade's Quarry. Here's how Quarry plays off the flooring.

Countertop, I'm leaning towards Caeserstone Quartz in a white or grayish color. Most likely Pure white. I could use some help here.

Backsplash I'm completely lost. My cooktop will be right against the wall, and I'm sure it will look too naked with just paint. Maybe some backpainted glass? The wall will be open to the living room so I don't want tile or any crazy designs.

Appliances are all Bosch. Refrigerator, Cooktop, Oven, Rangehood, Paneled Dishwasher.

Plumbing Fixtures: Kohler Strive sink, Blanco Culina Faucet.

Any and all help/critique/whatever is greatly appreciated!
