I'm curious about your experience with meds for ADHD. ADHD

Hi, I'm 18 years old and I've been taking meds (Ritalin 18 mg per day and later going to check 36 mg if it works better) for one week and it's fucking amazing. I always thought my scattering and daydreaming was part of my personality but it obviously wasn't. I'm curious if any of you after taking them:

  • stopped to be scattered by moving cars, turned on small things like a refrigerator
  • started to think brighter
  • if you play games ,you got better at them
  • you don't repeat every minute "what?" when talking with someone

Those changes were the biggest one. I'm happy to hear how much it changed your life :D

ADHD Pro-Tip: Use a magnet on the washer to avoid stinky clothes ADHD

I'm not sure how many times I've done it, but I often seem to forget that I have laundry in the washing machine. This is particularly hilarious because in my apartment, the washing machine is in the kitchen, not hidden at all, completely out in the open. There is no way I could get it on my way to the refrigerator looking for something to eat and finding nothing because I haven't gone shopping yet while not doing the dishes.

So I put a magnet on the lid of the washing machine when there are clothes in it. It nags me that there are clothes in the washer that I need to move. They have them for dishwashers, I guess. But I just have a big honking magnet that sticks out like a sore... um... thumb. YMMV.

ADHD and roommates... ADHD

Soo my roommates are pretty much the antithesis of ADHD. Calm, organized, go to bed early, incredibly resistant to impulsive behavior such as drugs and alcohol/spending money, and always on time to everything. Last night I accidentally left the refrigerator open all night and my roommate got really pissed at me. Although I've been keeping things under control and trying to use mindfulness to be cognizant of my surroundings, I can still make a mess sometimes. I want to explain to my roommates that my ADHD sometimes makes me prone to making these kinds of mistakes, but I don't want to to sound like a cop out. I feel as though they look at me as kind of a disrespectful individual even though in reality I'm trying harder than I ever have to not make these kinds of mistakes. They've clearly never lived with anybody with even mild ADHD, whereas I had previously lived with close friends who understood and accepted me. Any advice from someone with a similar experience?

Bullet Proof Coffee? ADHD

I bought a Keurig and some K cups coffee capsules. I have organic coconut oil and salted butter from Kroger already in my refrigerator. Will this be enough to make bullet proof coffee? I've read about it and I was really hoping it would help me with some of my ADHD problems. But some sources claim it won't be effective unless I buy some "brain octane oil" and organic grass fed butter. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Finally admitted that I need calendars/schedules ADHD

I can't remember anything. Appointments, errands, groceries, bill dates, you name it. Never have, and just stubbornly dealt with things last minute. But I downloaded Google calendar, and it's a freaking godsend. You can set reminders in it for a certain time and if you have a smart watch or fitbit, it will vibrate them for you. I haven't forgotten a thing since.

I also got a refrigerator calendar. Great for seeing things long-term instead of having it surprise me the day of/day before.

What's the worst excuse you've used to get out of something? ADHD

So this makes me cringe everytime I think back on it, but this one time in high school this girl wanted me to come over to hangout. My brilliant mind decided that "cleaning out my refrigerator" was the best excuse to get out of it. No idea where i came up with this(why would i rather be doing that?) Also now that we're seniors in college we catch up sometimes and she still brings it up and all of my other ridiculous excuses

I landed my dream job, and I feel like I'm already screwing it up ADHD

I recently got a new job taking care of cats at an animal rescue. Coming from an office job I couldn't stand, I am so happy to be doing what I am doing.

Unfortunately, taking care of animals means remembering to do a lot of different things every day, and I already feel like I'm fucking up to the point that I'm beginning to dread going in every morning. Every day, I have to clean (which includes remembering to brush all the furniture, wipe all the surfaces including ones that require a ladder to reach, clean the windows, change the water bowls, sweep and mop, take out the trash, change out the litter boxes, clean and refill the dirty boxes, wash dishes, and put everything back in the same place it was before at the end), prepare food for more than 25 cats many of which have special dietary needs, keep the laundry running, refill the humidifiers, keep eyes on all cats to watch for medical symptoms or unusual behaviors, wash all the cleaning tools once a week, et cetera, et cetera. I find all the cleaning pretty enjoyable, even relaxing, but it seems like every. damn. day. I forget to do something I'm supposed to do. Like I'll forget to turn on the lights in the morning (since the rooms are pretty sunlit) or I'll bring the cats their food and completely forget to put the open cans away in the refrigerator when I move on to the next task. Sometimes I remember things before anyone else notices, but a lot of times other people notice first, and I feel like they are starting to get pissed off at me and think I'm a total idiot.

Earlier today, I was washing dishes and I forgot to change out the towel on the counter first. I ended up stacking all the clean dishes on a filthy towel. My coworker basically confronted me with, "What the hell were you thinking?" Then, I went to take out the trash and I was so flustered by the mistake and the confrontation that I walked out to the trash can, DIDN'T THROW THE TRASH AWAY, and walked back in with it in my hand. My coworker looked at me like I was the biggest dumbfuck in the world. I apologized and said something like "Sorry, my brain isn't working today," and she replied, "It looks that way." I had to hold back tears as I was washing the dishes because I felt so humiliated and ashamed.

I feel like the biggest fuck-up in the world. I feel like I am going to lose this job because I can't keep basic shit straight in my brain. These aren't even tasks that require any real intelligence. I'm not really someone who cries much or is overly sensitive to constructive criticism, but have a deep, primordial sore spot about being confronted over these stupid, random blind spots I have. I am filled with anxiety at the idea of going in tomorrow to the point that even seeing my neighbor's cats walking around it making me depressed. I feel like if it happens again, I am just going to break down crying and embarrass myself even more, and I know the more anxious I am, the more likely I am to forget things because I'm so preoccupied with my anxiety. My friends and family always encouraged me to get a job doing something I loved. I told them that would be hard because things I love would be ruined if they were a job. I feel like I was right.

OK is it me or does ADHD strike right when you think you're on top of things? ADHD

So I had to a presentation for my Spanish class we had to bring in a picture from when we were little and just say some shit about it in Spanish. I thought I took one of the magnetic pictures of me off the refrigerator and put it in my bookbag. So now we're doing presentations and I go to take the picture out of my backpack and guess what guys? The picture is nowhere to be found. So here I am like an asshole being the only kid who forgot to bring in a picture. Except I didn't forget I just couldn't get the fucking thing from point A to point B. The bitch of it is I took my vyvanese today but I must have misplaced the picture before I took my meds and now it's in the black void wherever all my other missing shit is . I thought I was on top of it . Just when you think it's safe to go back to the beach ...

Frustrated non-ADHD spouses question ADHD

MY SO has taken both adderall and and vyvanse successfully (currently taking). However with both, I feel that he has experienced that same problem: aggressive behavior and tendencies towards rage and emotional outburts. Is this a symptom of the ADHD itself, a medication side-effect, or both? He says that sometimes his medication makes it hard for him to sleep and I know that amphetamines affect your appetite. These outburst are triggered by very small things. He got VERY upset with me this morning and had a complete emotional come-apart because I accidentally put a frozen bag of bagels back in the refrigerator. Apparently, they were frozen and needed to thaw. I picked them up by the top of the bag where it was gathered and couldn't feel that it was cold or I would have left them out! I don’t know what to do or how to approach the situation because I know it will happen again because it has before!

How I found the surest sign to confirm I have ADHD ADHD

I just hit myself in the head with the refrigerator door. I wasn't paying attention to it while closing it. I think I have a minor concussion.

Not sure if ADHD or just me being plain stupid...

The refrigerator demands my attention. ADHD

I'm currently trying to study for finals, and I can't focus on my studying for more than a few minutes. Every time any single noise comes up I immediately register it and it takes up and equal share of my attention span. Currently my refrigerator is buzzing and it keeps distracting me as well, which is generally concerning.

It seems like half the time I can actually somehow concentrate, given enough motivation, but even then I have to exert willpower to block out any distraction that is around me. It seems like even if I have no distractions, I still don't have the willpower to get over any impulses to go on my phone or stop working. Trying to be more disciplined helps, but often it's just so much effort to just try to do simple things.

Anyways I'm currently waiting for some Ritalin to kick in so I don't waste another day of studying and wanted to vent a bit, good luck to anyone taking any finals next week!

Constantly thinking of things during the day and not doing them when you're home ADHD

The title says it all.

I forget to do those things that I think about. Whether it's writing a story in my head or start working on a functional specification for an idea for an app I thought of in my head.

And my family has the same problems or are too busy, so if I try telling them to remind me about something I'll forget it too.

If I write it down on papers on the walls or refrigerator, or even on some program on my phone or computer, I'll forget to do it. Even if the idea is written down right in front me, I can forget to even turn my head and look at it.

It's bad because not doing those thigns prevents me from having any trial and error, thus meaning I'm gonna fall behind on them in the future.

The thing I hate is that I see this shit coming, and I know what to do to avoid it, but I never end up doing it well.

I feel like I'm gonna fail in the end guys.

Today I'm pissed off at everything, but very productive ADHD

It seems I get the most work done around the house when I'm pissed off. It's my day off and the SO is at work, and I didn't do much early. Earlier as I was sitting on the couch, half rewatching GoT season 1, half playing a game on my phone and half playing with the dog, I started to get pissed off at anything and everything. So I got up and took a shower, during which I angrily bathed, in the hopes that I'd feel better after. Nope.

So then in my anger I did the dishes, put away laundry, cleaned out the refrigerator, took the trash out, and swiffered the floors. Anyone else seem to be more productive when angry?

ADHD and Gardening ADHD

Every spring i get so excited about planting the garden. I get hyper-focused on planning and planting. I start off with a very strict habit of watering and weeding. And I Love It. I have a fairly large garden.

About half way through summer, my excitement starts to wane and the passion becomes a chore. I'm not focused anymore. I forget to water and weed. I set alarms, i snooze them or turn them off. If i make it outside i usually get distracted by something in the garden.. Or one of the kids, or a neighbor, or a dog barking, or the thought of how if the wind blew just slightly different a single piece of pollen could have landed several houses away... Or about how i should have bookmarked that webpage that i didn't finish reading; but it doesn't really matter anyway because ill never go back to finish reading it, Or something else...

Anyway, its now the end of summer has come and I am harvesting what i can from my garden, but im feeling down because my garden is all dried and shrivelled. It could be so much better had i watered and spent more time focused. Now ill take my bounty inside set it on the table or put in the refrigerator until i can jar it up or cook it. The family will pick at the fresh bounty for a few days, then it will start to spoil. I will have forgotten about it, and it will all go to compost. Ill start to question if I should even do a garden next year. This lasts about 5 minutes until i forget, then I'm on to something else.

Next year, the process and the excitement will start all over again...

Anyway... The point is that i get too focused on planning and fail miserably at execution. This can be a metaphor for almost everything in my life.

Are others the same way?

PSA: Refrigerate your fish oil. ADHD

Fish oil supplements expire roughly 90 days after you open them. Light, heat and oxygen are the primary factors that influence degradation rate. Even stored in the dark, fish oil may oxidize unacceptably within a month of storage, according to a review published in the 2013 edition of the journal "BioMed Research International."

Source: PDF

Tips:

  • Don't buy more than a month supply at a time.
  • Consider storing your capsules in the Refrigerator or Freezer which will slow the oxidation. This has the added benefit of preventing fishy burps.
  • Capsules are more resistant to oxidation than liquid fish oil. If in doubt, cut open the capsules and smell them. Fish oil that has sufficiently oxidized will have a pungent odor, off-flavor, and possibly gel-capsule discoloration.

Excessive daytime sleepiness and adult ADHD? ADHD

Hi there. I (22 yo female) have not been officially diagnosed with ADHD, but a couple people have mentioned that I display some symptoms. I have always been an exceptional student without any behavioral issues, but I constantly misplace things (found my cell phone in the refrigerator last week...), have a very animated personality, cannot stand still (have always rocked and paced since I was little), and have a ton of trouble paying attention to directions, lectures, etc. I frequently get lost in my own thoughts and "zone out". My dad is a doctor and thinks it's absurd to suggest ADHD as a possibility since I have never had any issues in school or life in general, but I also think he has a lot of the same problems I do.

My biggest health complaint as of the last few years has been extreme sleepiness. I have no problem sleeping for 10+ hours straight--falling and staying asleep is not an issue. However, I can never stay awake during lectures or if I am driving my car for long distances, even if I got a lot of sleep the night before. I also have really vivid, typically negative dreams every time I sleep. I take prozac and wellbutrin for my depression so I thought maybe this is what causes the dreams but I don't know. I exercise regularly, am a normal weight, and do not snore, so I feel like this probably isn't sleep apnea. I am trying to get a sleep study done to be sure. I used to think maybe this was narcolepsy, but now I am wondering if this could just be a symptom of ADHD??

I am so conflicted because I feel like ADHD diagnoses are rarely black and white, and I do not want to give myself a label or take powerful drugs for something that I do not "have", especially since no one in my childhood (e.g., teachers) ever mentioned that they saw symptoms . Any insight would be much appreciated!
