A few questions about gaining weight and building muscle nutrition

Hey guys, I've recently begun to care more about my size; I'm a pretty scrawny junior in high school and I don't want to get like super ripped or anything but I do want to gain some more weight and build some muscle. What are some good exercises (besides push ups since I'm already doing those) and types of foods that I should be eating? I also just bought some nutrition shakes from Ralphs, the Kroger strawberry ones and I'll just be honest, I have no idea how to use them; do I keep them in the refrigerator, drink with a meal or before or after, add water, or what? Thanks for any tips and help you guys can give me!
