I have been working at X job for about 5 1/2 months now. I am surprised this place hasn't been shut down by health and safety. It is a vile breeding ground of bacteria and (narcissistic and mentally challenged) management.
The pay was too good to be true for a job of this type but, since I had experience they gave me more hourly (first red flag). I also got hired right on the spot after they realized I had experience, they didn't even read my resume because they didn't know I had experience (second red flag). The hiring manager then told me if there was any problems with the manager I would be working with, he said to come talk to him if I was more comfortable with that (third red flag).
I accepted the job anyway. I had a terrible string of luck jumping from seasonal to seasonal job, so to find one that didn't have an end date made me happy. It was a standard X job of course. I'd worked food service before... but not this one.
The shit I have seen would cause you to never shop at a X again. Our refrigerators are usually around 45~50 degrees Fahrenheit, that includes our backstock of pre-made ready to eat items. Employees have gotten sick from our food (ie. vomiting).
We had a mice problem, the poison traps worked wonders. I wonder where their little dead carcasses are decomposing? Probably under the cases where the food is stored.
Underneath cases are not cleaned because of the ant problems (during training I was told this) and the drip cups catching coolant continuously dripping from the "cold" cases(if you can call them that).
One of the main hand washing sinks doesn't have hot water, management has been told and promptly ignores this problem because it cost too much to repair.
Also, I was hired to work one area of the department that i have experience with and over time they pushed me to other jobs that are not related to my experience. Bait and switch if you will.
About the department specific manager though, She believes in guilt-tripping, minimizing, and insults as good management skills. We, the ungrateful employees work while she sits at her desk, paining her nails (not a joke at all). She walks into the food prep area without a hairnet or a hat (nor even non-slip shoes) and instead of positive criticism, she tell everybody that they are nobodies and she could do everything better than us.
No co-worker will report these issues... the last one who did got bullied by the managers until he finally quit. I've mentioned it to my asst. managers to which they say I am being "dramatic" and ignore me.
I'm in the process of leaving as soon as I have another stable job lined up, but that is taking forever and a day. I want to call the Health Department or anyone so that this hellhole is accountable for their lack of safety.
I dont even know what the right choice is. I can't quit without another job lined up and I can't call Health while I'm still here (or lest they blame me and terminate me for bullshit reasons). I don't know what the right choice is. I serve food to people every day not even knowing if this will be the meal that makes them sick. I want to tell people, but I can't afford to be fired. Every day they ask a little more from me, everyday it takes a little bit of my life. I've been depressed again, which is something I could have lived without. I want to be the better person, but I cant live on good intentions. What is even the right choice, my SO and I lives or other peoples health?
