I live in a one-person apartment, and was out of state for almost all of the month of May. Of the 28 day billing cycle, I was there for either 1-2 days. I got billed for a metered usage of 239KWh (averaging 356 Watts!), costing $41.73. I thought this was a bit high, but didn't do anything about it and paid the bill (it may have been a mistake to wait on this).
All electronics were unplugged and all lights were off except for the refrigerator for this period (no A/C). Using a Kill-A-Watt, I measured my refrigerator over 12 hours and it averaged 46 Watts (so I got billed for 7.7x as much electricity as I should have).
Edit: My electricity bill for May was higher than previous months, anyways (where I was in the apartment and using power for things other than the fridge).
What should I say to my electric company about this to get my money back? Should I also contact my landlord to see if there is anything leeching electricity?
