The cold door closed silently behind me and the hall was empty once again. Take a deep breath, let’s find the exit door and process this nightmare later. There were a few halls and no sense of direction so it was just a blind leap on which direction to go. All the halls were lined with doors but these were different from the steel doors back the way I came. These had large windows in them. It looked like Plexiglas or something. I crept up to one of the doors, not so sure I want to know what’s behind it but let’s be honest. You want to know too. Well, I wasn’t quite prepared for the thin white waxy thing sticking out from under a jail house cot. It was a concrete room and something black all along the walls. It almost looked, rotten. The mattress was sunken and the fabric tattered as though it had been rotting away for years and years. Suddenly this waxy thing moved and I realized it was an arm. A long thin very boney arm. It was reaching out from under the bed as though pulling itself along the floor. Right towards me.
As you can imagine I bounced on down the hall toward the edge of an intersecting hall. Right around the corner the walls had large windows here too showing off all the fancy lab equipment and industrial refrigerators. That icy chill again, something is very wrong here and I for sure need to nope out of this stat. These things looked like animals in cages but they were, I don’t know. They were supernatural, devils or demons or something. Not a soul was in sight and I couldn’t hear anything. I stood up real tall and hurried my way towards the other end. There was a big door at the end that looked like an exit. Please god let this be the way out. Elevator. Close enough. Based on everything I had seen so far I figured my best bet was up. Of course. No numbers on the button pad. Just buttons. A quick scan showed no obvious cameras sticking off the wall so I just picked a random button. Third from the bottom, likely that’s going to be near the ground floor. The doors slid closed and I felt a sigh of relief. It didn’t move. At least I don’t think it did. The card in my pocket but I don’t see a scanner. I pulled it out of my pocket to take a look and no sooner did I take it out the elevator beeped and I fell the familiar sensation of being pulled up. Good god there is no turning back now. Where would I go anyway? Back to that room?
I remember the book and rested my hand on it. What happened to Becky? Is she here somewhere? Is she dead? This made me shudder, I’m not out of here yet. The elevator came to a full stop and I straightened again. The huge but silent doors slid back open to reveal a dark office building. It never occurred to me what time it was. I was in a well-lit basement lab. Filled with monsters. This floor looked like a cramped office building with cubicles and a few larger offices around the edges. Protecting the cubicle owners from all that dangerous view and natural sunlight. So what’s the plan now? Find some stairs maybe or look out one of the windows to see what floor you’re on. Brilliant. I followed the line of offices until I found one unlocked and slipped inside. For how fancy everything is downstairs this seems a bit low end. Older computers and a badly stained carpet. It looked like what you expect a cheap sleazy CEO to have just for his hookers. I didn’t want to touch anything. I peeled back the grimy blinds and peeked out over a part of town I didn’t recognize. Much more urban and busy. The stranger thing was I was about 13 or 14 stories up. I was in a damn maze of a building. Fuck. Damn it Becky.
