Hey /r/Dallas -
TL;DR: I live in an apartment in the Design District and my place is OVERRUN with fruit flies (gnats). I'm wondering if anybody else is experiencing the same thing?
IN DETAIL: My apartment is OVERRUN with fruit flies (gnats). This has been an ongoing problem for some months. I have tried tackling the situation myself and I've reached out for help from our apartment exterminator. The exterminator's answer was to put some ice in the disposal and run it without water. The end. Now, that may have some benefits that I'm unaware of, but it did nothing to solve (or even diminish) my problem. Some of the steps I've take to try to remedy the problem include:
- Cleaned and refrigerated / disposed of all fruits & veg
- Cleaned and washed the safety guard in my kitchen sink
- Cleaned all the basins (sinks and tub) with bleach
- Moved all furniture and cleaned behind (not a likely source but I was desperate)
- Put bleach tabs in my toilet water
- Set traps throughout the apartment (Apple cider vinegar with a dab of dish-washing soap)
- Closed vents
- Open vents
- Kept the sliding door to my balcony closed
- Kept the slider open
- Cleaned the washing machine
- Thoroughly cleaned the fridge
- I empty the trash daily to get rid of food sources
- Cleaned and washed the tray in the door of the fridge (to eliminate any standing water)
I could go on. I have literally been battling this for MONTHS. I have NO IDEA where they're coming from and the situation now has become untenable. I'm setting traps daily and catching up to 50 fruit flies per day! I don't know what else to do. I need help. I can't stand being home because they're flying around in my face. I can't eat here because if I try to prepare food they're swarming around (particularly salads, lettuce, vegetables, etc.) landing on and in the food. I can't have guests over because my apartment stinks from the apple cider vinegar traps, and I'm embarrassed to have my friends and family besieged with bugs. I am at my wits end.
I've contacted apartment mgmt who did offer to take some additional steps (check my weather stripping and behind the refrigerator and dishwasher) but was told there really was no solution until the season changes. Any of you experiencing the same thing? Any advice?
