I was involved in a hit and run accident last night, and need help figuring out what my next steps are.
I was sitting at a stoplight and was rear ended by a Honda Crosstour. From the force of the impact it felt like the driver never applied her brakes. I hit my forehead on the steering wheel and was dazed for a few minutes, although I don't believe I suffered a concussion.
The force of the impact to my vehicle caused me to hit the vehicle in front of me. The couple in that vehicle got out to make sure I was okay and stayed with me until the police arrived. The driver of the vehicle that hit me got out, asked the couple if I was okay, and then stated that she had medicine in her refrigerator that she needed to get to her child. Afterward, she got back into her vehicle and drove off with no indication that she would return (she never did), nor did she leave any information. Fortunately, the couple got her license plate number and provided it to police.
No damage was done to the couple's vehicle (an older truck built like a tank). Moderate aesthetic damage was done to my vehicle (bumpers are thrashed and my hood is slightly bent).
I'm doing okay now, but my lower back is really sore and probably hurts worse than anything else. CT scans were negative, and I can't say enough positive things about the police.
Should I retain a lawyer and what should I do to press charges on the negligent driver? At the least I'd like compensation for the repairs to my vehicle and my medical bills.
