The person I have in mind is Leo Szilard. The man is responsible for essential developments in nuclear physics and particle physics. Also helped design the most commonly used refrigerator that is not reliant on electricity. He also designed a a treatment using cobalt for his cancer and cured himself before passing due to a heart attack a year later.
