ELI5: Why does printer technology seem to be stuck in 1998? explainlikeimfive

The year is 2015. We have lightening fast internet, cell-phones with all the functionality of a computer, and facial recognition technology built into Facebook.

So why, then, do printers seem so behind the times? They've gotten no smaller since the 1990's, color printers use a TON of ink, and they experience far more technical difficulties than any other piece of modern computing equipment (those of you who work in an office, how many times a week do you hear "it won't print"?). Even commercial BW printers are still the size of a small refrigerator. It just doesn't make any sense.
