An Ouija board is not just some silly little game that some giddy friends play around with. If you dare choose to play around with the Devil's board game, you better have a crucifix on you; however, I am not even sure if that will save your soul.
My friends were just the giddy people who decided they wanted to fuck around with the underworld. I was around fourteen or fifteen years old at the time and I was staying the night at my friend's house whom I had known since the sixth grade, Michelle. Our friend, Kaitlyn, was spending the night as well. We three got a long just fine, even though Michelle had her 'bipolar' moments. Such a ridiculous excuse to blame your anger issues on in my opinion, but this story isn't about that.
It was around 10PM and we were all in the living room, including Michelle's mother who was sleeping, watching TV, when Michelle's cousin, Nicole, decided to come and visit. When I first met Nicole, I felt something off about her. She would talk like she just didn't give a fuck, and she was smoking a cigarette in the house, even though Michelle's mother had asthma and was just a few feet from her resting on the couch. She would cough from time to time when the toxic cloud came towards her. Nicole was pissing me off with how inconsiderate she was. This girl is into the paranormal, which is about the only thing we have in common, and she decides that we should all play with an Ouija board.
My heart started thumping uneasily at the mention of that 'game'. I love the paranormal but I'm no damn fool. Luckily, Michelle doesn't own one and I felt relieved at the time. " Oh, that's okay, I'll just go back home and get mine." Nicole said then she headed out the door. She only lived four houses down from Michelle. " Oh, great." I thought. I wanted to leave then. However, I didn't want to look paranoid in front of my friends. Oh, why did I have to be so self conscious and give a damn about how people thought about me back then?
Ten minutes later Nicole arrives back with her own personal spirit infested board game. The sight sent icy chills down my spine. She sat it down on the floor and asked for us to gather around it. Michelle and Kaitlyn join her on the floor but I stay my ass on the couch. " What's with your friend? Is she scared of a stupid toy?" Nicole mocked me while inhaling on her death stick. Michelle looked at me with a smile. " Hailey, it's just a game. You like this kind of stuff, don't you?". " Yeah, when it's in a book or on TV where I'm not in the same room with it." I answered with a nervous voice. I wasn't going to take part in conjuring up Satin's minions, they could have all the fun with that. I didn't care what they thought of me at that point; no matter even if it was just paranoia. Nicole rolled her eyes at me and then they began to play.
At first they were asking it the cliche moronic questions like " Who are you?" " Where did you come from?" " Are you here with us?" 'Oh, shut the hell up', is what I wanted the spirit to say to them. Then Nicole asked the board while looking at me with a grim smile " What do you think of that pathetic kid sitting on the couch over there?" My eyes widened. Did she dare involve me in this thing?!
The triangular piece began to move, which of course just could've been the three of them pushing on it. It began swirling around the board until it landed on the letter H. Then it swiftly went to the letter A, then T, and finally E. My heart dropped into my stomach and my eyes enlarged in fear.
Nicole burst out laughing. " I can't believe you fell for that, what a joke." she had tricked me and my friends were laughing with her. I glared at her and got up to get myself something to drink just to get out of there. I wasn't mad at my friends, they were just joking, but Nicole...oh I didn't like her at all.
In the kitchen I got myself a can of soda and sat down at the little round table that was in there and waited until they were done having their fun. Suddenly, I get a shiver down my spine when I hear the floor boards creek behind me. I quickly jerk my body around to see who is behind me, but there's no one there. I sigh, a bit agitated at myself. " Calm down, Hailey, sometimes floors make that noise." A shadow then quickly darts into the bathroom door that is three feet from me at the end of the kitchen. My heart beat out of sync again and I fixed my eyes on the area. " Oh, my gosh. I'm just seeing things." I say. I look around at the dark kitchen that had only the moon that was shining in through the window as light. I decided to turn on the light so I would stop with my foolishness. As I am about to get up I feel something furry go against my legs. Michelle doesn't have any pets. I jumped out of my seat, knocking my can over and ran into the living room.
The girls were looking at me as if I were mad and thought I was even crazier when I told them what happened. Nicole scoffed. " It was probably a rat. You're just a fucking chicken. God, I'm glad I'm not friends with you." My blood boiled at her words. " Alright, bitch, if it was a rat then that must have been one huge rat that was extra furry!" Nicole gave me a death glare at calling her such a name. 'Oh, crap, what did I just say?' I thought, a bit scared now. 'Man, I gotta watch myself when I'm pissed'
Nicole stood up and toward over me making me feel small. " What the hell did you just call me, bitch?" she said in an intimidating voice. Just as I was about to get the smack down of my life, the lights suddenly began to flicker in a hasty manner. " Oh, my god, you guys, look at the board!" Kaitlyn said in a freaked out voice, causing us to snap our attention from each other. My heart pounded like a jackhammer inside my chest.
The triangular piece was moving like a swarm of bees all around the board by itself! That's when I became horrified and angry. " You see, that's why you don't fucking play with a fucking Ouija board!" "OW!" Michelle shrieked in pain. " Something pulled my hair." I had enough. I snatched the thing off the floor and threw it outside. That didn't solve anything.
When I shut the door and turned around, my heart dropped because there in the hallway lied the Ouija board. "What the hell?" I gasped. My friends got up to see what I was looking at, they couldn't see the hallway from their perspective. Kaitlyn gasped in horror. " Uh...Hailey, didn't you just throw that thing outside?" Michelle then turned to her cousin. She was not happy. " Get your game and get the hell out of my house and don't you ever bring that thing with you again!"
Nicole could tell that her cousin was not playing and she darted into the hallway, grabbed the board, and left. As soon as she left, the atmosphere began to feel normal again. As if a dark and sinister weight had been removed. I was so relieved that the demonic game was out of the house, however, I still worried about the spirit that could have came out of it. I looked towards Michelle's mom, who was still sound asleep on the couch. That woman was indeed a very heavy sleeper.
Early the next morning, we were all sitting at the table, picking at our choice of breakfast. We were all still shaken up from the night before. That was the first and last time I would ever be in the same room with an Ouija board, and my friends agreed they would never play with one again.
Michelle's mother steps into the kitchen and goes toward the refrigerator to get herself some juice. " Good morning, mom." Michelle greeted her mother. Her mother turned around and I almost dropped my toast that was in my hand. For a split second, it appeared as if her eyes were dead, like they saw nothing and just stared out into the emptiness. " Good, morning." she said in a voice that made my skin crawl.
I have never been back to her house since. Let me give you some friendly advice: Don't ever play with an Ouija board.
