Creating a food budget for the first time? personalfinance

Hi guys,

I'm currently a college student living in the dorms with a meal plan, but starting October/late September (when school starts), I'm moving into my first apartment and I will no longer have a meal plan. One of my biggest worries is what I will do in terms of food. I've been browsing /r/eatcheapandhealthy and /r/frugal for ideas on how to save money on food, but I haven't really seen anything on how to actually create a food budget for myself. Setting a budget is important to me in terms of food, I'm the kind of person who could see myself saying "Whoa they're having a sale on chicken breasts? Let me get 7!" and then eating several pounds of chicken that evening.

I'll list some general information about myself that can help in creating a food budget:

  • Height: 5'11
  • Weight: 225
  • Activity Level: Lift weights 4x a week
  • I have access to Costco, but I don't have a car so the food I can carry would be limited to what I can carry on my back and in a suitcase.
  • I cannot eat eggs, but I can eat egg products.
  • I have access to a stove, a conventional oven, a toaster, and a microwave oven. I can purchase a toaster oven if necessary (recommendations for one would be good too). I also have access to a refrigerator and a freezer, but the freezer is not very large.

In terms of income, I'm starting an internship on Monday that's paying around $1800 over the next 8 weeks, but my income at my regular job is only going to be about $400 a month once school starts. I receive enough financial aid to cover the cost of housing, so I'll only be paying gas, electricity, and internet. Internet is $25/month per person (only 2 people) and I don't know how much gas and electricity will be.

Any help is appreciated!
