Trimming cabinet over refrigerator? HomeImprovement

So we have an older house, and the previous owners did a remodel in the early 90s. They put a cabinet/cupboard over the refrigerator. However, they mounted it so the height of the bottom edge is about 66" from the floor. The only refrigerators that would fit into that spot are those apartment efficiency-style refrigerators.

I've heard a couple things online about taking the cabinet down, running the circular saw around the bottom and re-installing the trim to shorten them. Has anyone tried this?

For background, we're looking at this because our kitchen is a bit small and we're hesitant to throw out a nice oak cabinet with decent storage.

Any other thoughts or ideas?
