Tomorrow's Horrors shortscarystories

Today, Zack dreams of a vast ocean he can see across. He waves to a person standing on the other shore. Only after waving does Zack recognize this person as his friend, Reggie.

Tomorrow, Zack would meet Reggie, shortly before Reggie's panicked eyes are plucked out by one of the horrors. One second Reggie will be staring at one of the things coiled on the lawn, the next second it will whip towards his face, leaving Reggie blind and helpless as more horrors circle in around him.

Today, Zack wakes from his oceanic dream with a parched mouth. He goes to the kitchen for a cold glass of water. Inside the refrigerator, his hand skips past his mom's leftovers and grabs the jug of purified tap water.

Tomorrow, Zack would find his mom hanging from the ceiling, begging for the pain to stop. Except the horrors will be deaf to her pleas. Instead, they will reach under her skin, pulling her ligaments like strings on a marionette.

Today, Zack shuffles back to bed after finishing his water. He struggles with a rumple in his covers. As he untangles his sheets, he thinks about tomorrow. He thinks about eating the same breakfast he eats every day. He thinks about the same school he has been going to for three years. He thinks about watching the same television, phone, and computer screens he watches every single day of his life.

Tomorrow, Zack would look up and watch as a parade of meat wanders down from the blackening sky, inflated sacks of flesh floating down to the ground. Voices would ask what they were, but no answer would rise to anyone's lips. Not until a symphony of screams would offer their answer.

Tomorrow, Zack will hide huddled in his closet. He will cry for the first time in years. He will pray to God for the first time since he can remember. When one of the horrors comes scuttling into his room, Zack will try stifling his shivering gulps for air.

Zack will not remain hidden for long.

The horror will taste the texture of Zack's fear.

But today, Zack drifts off to sleep, dreading the horrors of tomorrow’s monotonous routine.
