[TOMT] [book] YA Fiction novel, "smelled sweet but rotten like a peach that rolled behind the refrigerator and was left there to rot" tipofmytongue

I read this book sometime between 2007-2010, large gap I know but I'd lean towards earlier rather than later. I believe the character in it may have been middle eastern. She was a young-ish girl, and I believe the cover of the book was a very dark/subtle galaxy print. The quote I have isn't word for word but as close as I can remember, it's describing a creature that the girl wakes up to, it's sitting on her dresser (or foot of the bed?) and smiling at her. I remember thinking it was kind of described like the Cheshire Cat.
