Why does it take so much energy to cool something down? Like refrigerators and AC units? askscience

I was told in school that when something cools, it's losing energy in the former of heat. So when something is cooling down in a fridge, it's losing its heat energy. So my question is, why does it take so much energy, to take away heat energy from things? Where is all of the energy going?
