She is a very good cook but at times she use out of date things. She had a personal matter a couple years ago and now shes sober. From those two years to now, we have found food that's from 2002 in her pantry. We told her that food expires and she flipped out and said, " Not when you freeze it and cans never go bad." To any sound person this statement is not true. She wanted proof, so we showed her and she still got upset. She let us clean out her pantry but didnt fully understand.
In the present, she still is using expired food, even after we explained the situation. I cleaned out the freezer yesterday, to make room for groceries we got for her and I find sliced chicken from 2012. When I asked her, she said its still good and that she got it from the back freezer.
Tonight she is making a chicken dinner for the family. It was a rotisserie chicken she had frozen. Once a chicken is cooked, you have a couple days, in the refrigerator, before it goes bad. She bought the chicken months ago but decided to freeze way after it expired in the refrigerator.
My brother decided to tell her and she stormed off. We offered getting a new chicken but she is so stubborn she told us all to leave. Of course we aren't leaving and are buying a new chicken.
At this point, we all walk on eggshells when she cooks food. We tried saying we will cook, but at 89 and losing abilities she still wants to cook.
How can we get her to understand?
