How do you operate the Verizon Fios Optical Network Terminal (ONT) box for internet and television without the back up battery and without it beeping? self

I have a question for all of you people that use Verizon Fios for internet and television service. As you know, they installed a big box on one of your walls so you could receive Fios service. This box is called a Optical Network Terminal (ONT), that has a couple bright green light (LED) that glow all day and night. The ONT has a battery backup, to provide up to 8 hours of emergency phone service in the event of a electrical outage. I do not have home phone service (I use a cell phone), so this is not an issue. My question is, can you unplug the ONT when you are not at home to conserve electricity and then plug it in when you want to use Fios ? Second question, the ONT will beeps when unplugged, can you unplug the battery back up to prevent the beeping?. It is my ongoing goal to use the least amount of electricity as possible. When I leave the house now, the only things drawing electricity, is my refrigerator and stand by power for my garage door opener, a fan and that huge ONT. The ONT is installed in my bedroom and and the light created by the LEDs is really bright at night, that is another thing I would like to resolve.
