Actually not me, but a friend of mine manages a hotel. Some HVAC guys said that due to strict environmental regulations, all 5 compressors need to be replaced or recharged. I dug into this a little bit... 3 of the compressors are of the hermetically sealed type (this model, in fact). They seem to be functioning fine, so why would they need replacing? From what I know of these units, the gas is internal to the unit and as long as its functioning, there's no point in replacing it -- even for environmental reasons.
The two walk-in-freezer compressors are a little larger and I couldn't adequately identify them, but they appear similar in physical size, well, slightly bigger, to the refrigerator ones. Is it reasonable to assume these are also hermetically sealed?
And here is where I'm a total noob. Is the coolant of the compressor completely separate from the coolant of the refrigerator? If so, how would I find out what coolant is actually being used for each refrigerator/freezer unit?
EDIT: Photo album of said compressor (1) walk-in-fridge, (2) walk-in-freezer, (3) some line conditioner -- all of them had this. http://ift.tt/1MQJutB
