Building a heavy-duty shelf in a kitchen alcove HomeImprovement

Hi all,

I'm looking to build a shelf in an alcove in my kitchen (UK), strong enough to bear the weight of a full 150L refrigerator, which will probably be around 50kg+ (110lb).

The alcove is only partially an alcove, really. It's two stud-walls (one side and back), and a wall from the fitted kitchen (second side). Overall, it's 825mm deep and 745mm wide. Ideally I want the height to be 965mm so it's flush with the rest of the kitchen counter.

I've hung shelves in the past using simple brackets for stuff like books and pictures, but not something that I want to reliably hold a weight. I was thinking of fixing a ledge of 2x4 (38mm x 89mm) along the edge of the perimeter, and then affixing some suitably sized planks on top as the shelf.

Does this sound like a reasonable plan?
