Black Stuff in Kitchen Sink Sprayer hose HomeImprovement

Sorry about not including pictures, I don't have an Imgur account and the pictures I took were blurry anyway.

For a while now there has been black stuff inside the sprayer hose in our kitchen sink. I think the black stuff might appear fuzzy, but it is tough to see through the plastic hose. Recently the black stuff started appearing around the little holes on the nozzle itself. The water now usually smells musty whenever we use the sprayer. The smell reminds me of a refrigerator at work that had to be thrown out due to mold contamination. I'm not 100% sure about that though.

For these reasons, my wife and I are concerned that this is some sort of mold growing in the sprayer tube.

Soaking the sprayer nozzle in Hydrogen Peroxide has removed the black stuff from the sprayer itself and the first few inches of the hose. We can't reach the rest of the hose.

My wife and I live in an apartment building. The water is city water and is supposed to be chlorinated, although the water doesn't smell chlorinated. We have brought this issue to the maintenance team in our building, and they assure us that the black stuff is just calcification and nothing is wrong with the tube. They don't see a need to replace the tube, telling us that all of the sprayers in the apartments in the building have this.

Has anyone seen this kind of issue before? Should we be concerned? Is there anything we can do to find out for certain what this stuff is?
