Protect against theft Silverbugs

I just thought I would throw out some tips about where to store your silver to protect against theft. Most of these ideas are long term storage not for quick access, great if you are investing silver long term.

  1. Make sure silver is protected from elements

  2. Look for places are utilitarian: outlet boxes (not live, silver conduct electricity very very well ;), unused or fake sewer pipes, behind drywall (cut out a section that way when you need to break it you can just break out that small section), fake electrical conduit, if you replace a ceiling light or fan, you can put some up behind the electrical box, fake drain in floor, inside an piano, inside the insulation of a freezer or refrigerator.

  3. Bury outside. Place in a 2 foot or more deep hole that is easy to remember and easy to get too. Place some change about 6 inches down from the top to deter metal detectors. If you live in the north remember that you may not be able to dig it up during winter.

  4. Use a dummy safe. Buy one of those cheap sentry safes and place it in a somewhat hidden area. Put a few twenties and a couple silver coins, some cheap jewelery and an old key in an envelope labeled "Deposit box." Thieves will get something and think they you have most of it at the bank.

  5. Do not hide in the toilet tank, drawers of any kind (thieves can pull out and dump fast), in the freezer (its a common place), near electronics (those are already big targets), in a cheap gun safe (guns are big targets and the cheap ones wont keep out a thief very long) and lastly out in the open to see (i know..duh..but you would be surprised how many people do).

6.Also do not tell people what you have (including family members, they can be the biggest thieves sometimes). People talk and tell other people. If you want to talk about silver always show friends or family the same few pieces so they think your collection is not that small. Those You Tube videos showing off collections always amaze me...nice advertising.

  1. Appear like you have nothing and appear to be home all the time. Lights on timers. Do not put on Facebook that you are going on vacation for a week (post after you are back). Only tell a trusted neighbor/family member you are leaving and to watch your house, dont tell the whole block. You can use a house sitter but they will have a lot of time to go thru your stuff, be very picky who you use (goes back to number 6, if they dont know you have it they wont look)

  2. Thieves want to be in and out in 5-10 min. They dont like to break glass or break things because of the noise. Keep doors and windows locks. Most thieves get in by unlocked window and doors. Very few actually break and enter.

Feel free to add on advice or questions. Thanks for reading and I hope it helps.
