Effect of quick restart on car air conditioner compressor Cartalk

On household refrigerators and air conditioners, there is usually about a 3 minute delay, before a compressor restarts after being shut off recently. Though i'm not sure of the exact reason, i've read it has something to do with the refrigerant pressure equalizing. Restarting the compressor before the pressure equalizes puts heavy load on the compressor.

I'm not sure if this is true, since I've also heard it is because it could cause the compressor to spin backwards.

What is actual fact? And what effect does this have on a car's compressor when a car is restarted often, with less than 3 minute intervals?
