I've been trying to apply thermal compound to my CPU and now when I turn on the PC the CPU fan goes 100mph, a warning comes on my screen (something like "cpu issue....shut down before any permanent damage is done to the CPU"...can't remember the exact message). Runs for a total of about 15 seconds then PC shuts off. I've applied it thinly to the cooler side and then screw it back together. The thermal compound is Arctic Silver 5 I bought about 3 years ago and kept in the refrigerator.
What am I doing wrong and have I done any permanent damage to the CPU?
