Apocalypse Hooch ideas? (North American version) Homebrewing

So a while ago this guy wrote about making some maritime hooch. Over the holiday I snagged an old coffee maker from the folks in order to try this out. But I didn't think through the fact that Vegemite isn't really a North American foodstuff. Neither is seaweed usually. So now I'm curious to play around with a N.A. version of this, thinking about let's say a zombie apocalypse. What can we scavenge from regular grocery stores to make this work?

I like the idea of using breakfast cereal (I have some muligrain stuff I'm eyeing on top of our refrigerator), and thinking about some mulched up orange rinds to bitter. The one thing I'm stuck on is that he uses the vegemite to provide nutrients to the "mash". Since there aren't any yeast extract products here that I'm aware of I'm not sure what to do about it. Is there some sort of common food item that would provide the necessary nutrients and yeast to benefit the hooch?

TL;DR - Making hooch for zombie apocalypse; no vegemite; what to use?
