Hey /r/nosleep, been a long time reader but I have never submitted anything. I don't even know if this is the right place for this post, but I need some help interpreting my dream.
So I've had the same dream since I was about 7 years old. Usually I'll have this dream two to three times a year and although it has changed slightly over the years as I have grown up, it is how it changed last night that disturbed me.
When I first started having the dream, I remember calling it "The Cool House Dream". I would appear in my dream inside a very large house. The layout of the house was rather confusing and logic defying, probably due to it being a dream, however there were four floors to the house. The first floor was rather small and I have very few memories taking place here. There was a small attic, which was filled with toys that I remember playing with a few times. Also the attic was not a creepy or dirty place, more so a well lit and comfortable room. From the first floor there was a hallway/staircase that connected the first floor both the basement and the sub-basement (for lack of a better term).
The basement was not so bad, it had a large room that branched off of the main staircase (on the left as you walked down) which contained couches, beds, and a t.v. and could be seen as the main living quarters of the house. There was a kitchen off of this room, and across the main hallway, there was another set of stairs that led up to two additional bedrooms.
The basement was actually the floor that my dreams centered around on the most as a kid. While I was growing up, the dreams were usually short and really had no focus. I would appear in the house alongside my younger sister. We would run around on the first floor and basement, sometimes going up to the attic to play with the toys, but eventually she would say "Do you want to watch t.v.?" and we would go to the main room in the basement, turn on the tube, and usually the dream would end there. There was a time or two where while we were watching, before the dream ended, I would hear something from out on the staircase, something from down below, in the sub-basement, but I did not venture down there until I was 15 years old.
That dream started normally, I had had this same dream a dozen or so times before so I was very familiar with the layout of the first and basement floors of the house but I was beginning to get curious about the deeper floors of the mansion. On the table in the entry way there was a note I had never noticed before. There were three "rules" written out on the paper:
1. Take care of your sister.
2. Don't open any locked doors.
3. Have fun!
I don't know where these rules came from or who wrote them, or why they suddenly decided to show up during my mid teens, but these same rules still appear to this day on the same table every time. Getting back to the dream, I remember reading these and then going about the typical dream business of walking around the house. "Do you want to watch t.v.?" my sister said to me, and just like every time before I agreed. Walking down the stairs to the t.v. room, I noticed the lights were on further down the hallway in the sub-basement. We walked into the t.v. room when my sister said "Did you hear that?" and pointed towards the staircase. I remember walking out on to the landing by myself, and beginning the decent into the sub-basement. It was dimly lit but I could see without any issues. I began to get a feeling of uneasiness as I made the last step onto the worn concrete floor. It appeared to be a storage floor. Old couches, tables, and chairs, beds, and other discarded items made up the bulk of the floor space. There was also a strange air duct about 5 steps from the bottom and another kitchen at the far end of the sub-basement. I remember feeling scared in this kitchen, a kitchen that only had some beaten up cabinets haphazardly strewn about and a very large refrigerator against the far wall. This was strange for the house (I mean aside from the fact that it was the second kitchen, it's bizarre layout, or anything else really) because the other rooms of the house were well furnished and well kept. The things here were discarded and not cared for. And I could not shake the uneasiness I felt in there. Even after I woke up, I would just feel troubled. But anyways, I would walk down to the sub-basement and into the second kitchen, where I would stand there with a key that for some reason appeared in my pocket, staring at the refrigerator. And that's where I would wake up.
This became the norm for the dream for about 4 years. Each time it would end with me staring, key in hand, at a goddamn refrigerator. And each time I had this dream it felt more like a nightmare. What was once a vivid dream when I was a child, began to be replaced with the unshakable feeling of dread the moment I would enter the dream. Instead of just going to watch t.v. my sister began to scream at me about something being in the house. Instead of playing and running around the house, I began to sneak around, looking for an intruder, or whatever else was there. And each time, it would end with me in front of the sub-basement fridge, staring, key in hand.
I don't know how I figured it out, but when I was 19 years old, I found a place for the key on the side of the refrigerator. It came open with a loud click to reveal a hidden room behind the doors. I didn't enter, however, a plain concrete room was revealed to me. A dirty, unlit, room with a door, chained shut on the opposite side of me. I once, worked up the courage to knock on the door with my fist, however fortunately, I received no return knocks. This was how the dreams would end now. And how they have ended until last night, which brings me to my point.
Last night I was placed in the woods. I was running, away from something, towards something, I don't know. I felt like I had little control over this dream compared to the rest. Still running, I found a cabin, flung open the door, and dove inside. The dilapidated building creaked and moaned with every step on the floor. It was clear to me that this building had been abandoned for quite some time. I continued walking around this house, and I knew something was familiar about it but what it was I did not know. Then I found the living room, t.v. blaring static in an otherwise silent room. Seeing this room I knew where I was. I began walking down the stairs, towards the second kitchen. I opened the secret door without the use of the key. And the chained up door in this hidden room was there ajar.
I know it may not be a horribly scary story for you readers and I know it may be a bit confusing to read due to lack of sleep, but I am terrified. I am terrified of the next time I have the "Cool House Dream". I am terrified of what lies behind the chained up door.
If any of you reading out there know anything about interpreting dreams feel free to contact me if you have any ideas.
