Neftali Greene, found dead in a dorm basement at Michigan State in September 1999 UnresolvedMysteries

This has always haunted me because it happened just a few weeks into my freshman year at MSU. His body was discovered after people started complaining about the smell, in an unused refrigerator in a storage room in the basement of Wonders Hall that was normally kept locked up (although I never heard if it was locked or not when he was found). He had been an on-and-off student at MSU for several years, wasn't living on campus at the time of his death, and had never lived in Wonders Hall.

A week after he was discovered, this article appeared suggesting he had ties with a cult:

Greene was found Sept. 22 in a 5-foot-long cooler in a dorm basement storage room.

Kleibecker said police think Greene got into the cooler on his own, then could not get out when the door clsed and locked behind him. But they are continuing their investigation and hope to know more when toxicology reports are in.

"There's still a remote possibility it was a suicide," Kleibecker said. But police think it's more likely the former Michigan State student was trying to find a place to stay, although they could not explain why he chose the cramped, unused cooler.

The toxicology reports were never released publicly, and I never heard another peep about the case. Was he murdered, or just looking for a place to hide? If so, why hide there?
