MGS3 SPOILERS.Overlooking Eva. Why she turns "damsel in distress trope" upside down. How Metal gear never supports any agenda's solution/ how themes are more important than cannon. metalgearsolid

The "debate" on male power fantasies and women being used, is complex . In my opinion, I agree sometimes it's used as a cheap plot devise, too often actually. but.. The solution is not to "start creating strong females in videogames all the time" .

I believe games should do that "more" but at the same time, art must sometimes express the reality of the Times.

If a creator wanted to express through art, women in 3rd world countries, should they sensor the "honor killings , stoning, and rape that happens in real life?

If you were to create a painting about Hitler's campaign, should you not reflect the sadness of the oppressed in the real world?

When Eva was tortured, was it a simple woman in the fridge trope? No it was not.

The character of Eva, was a spy. She needed to create her personality to accommodate volgin. If she was a strong character while being Tatiana, her mission would be a failure. Volgin would not "use her" . She would not be able to get close to him of she didn't use this as a weapon. Volgin needs a damsel in distress in order to fulfill his sadistic fetishes.

You could also say that the player and snake, believe they need to rescue the damsel eva. This knowledge and stereotype is used against snake by Eva.

The game particularly depicts nakedness as a metaphor for vulnerability on many occasions.

Snake is completely naked in many ways. Because of this, he has to be extra aware of his surroundings at all time.

The opposite of a male power fantasy.

"Getting the girl" the trope of winning the objectified woman at the conclusion of a story.

Again, flipped.

Badass snake, is completely shy and timid when faced with the possibility of a sexual encounter. The scene that best shows this is under the waterfall.

Snake has to navigate this section with all equipment and camo taken away from him, while also being injured and now half blind.

"woman in the refrigerator trope" a female who is cruelly harmed to ignite the motive in the viewer, player, into anger and revenge.

Instead, In mgs3 we could now call the trope, the Snake in the refrigerator. The maimed snake literally lost an eye through torture.

Naked and vulnerable, snake finally makes it to the sanctuary under the waterfall.

Eva arrives with his supplies, and just like James Bond himself, Eva tries to seduce, a naked enemy. But a Male instead.

He turns away when eye contact made, and becomes more and more uncomfortable.

At the end of the game, snake finally let's down his guard and they have sex on the living room floor.

Snake was the personified "object" in the end.

After waking the next day, snake is left with only a cassette revealing how he and everyone else was used. Their perceptions of her character, played the biggest role in her plans.

Snake was used and thrown away by not only his government, but by love as well.

This is interesting to me and relates to paz as well. Many people were not happy with "what" happened to her, understandable.

Yet, if you do some quick research on what happens to women in let's say, 3rd world camps occupied by militia factions in africa, you will find that much much, crueler things are happening in war.

When a country is bombed or drone bombed by any nation, most citizens are angry. Also understandable, Innocent people died. We don't however, seem to talk about "what happens" to the survivors, orphans, or injured people in war.

Our solution is to "make it stop". But never How to make it stop.

Kojima depicts with Paz, and Raiden in mgs2, What happens to the Victims of war. What happens after the fallout.

In the media, the news covers the bomb and travesty of "who done it" but the coverage doesn't follow up to "the result " and how the innocent lives were ruined.

This is why I respect kojima. I don't have a political allegiance, but a few of my republican friends seem to critique the "preaching" of Natasha and her long winded codec calls about the care of used nuke disposal, as "leftist complaining"

I agree in many other instances of storytelling, but if you notice, kojima never forces a "what we should be doing is" agenda. He simply points out "hey this happens in the real world and it's a problem with out an easy solution" .

His depictions of Raiden and Frank Jaeger also depict how the "solutions" we have to these problems aren't always well thought out.

Jaeger got help, rehabilitation, from his life as a child soldier, but it never erased or healed the trauma of what happened to him. It wasn't enough and he went back to the one person who if anything, always understood his pain.

Big Boss.

Old snake didn't care about all of the plot conclusions of mgs4, he didn't even really believe in the "why" that much.

He knows liquid, and ocelot, ad is the only one capable of stopping them. Some complain He's lost hiss righteous passion from mgs2, But I say, why should he care anymore? He is a dog that just found out he has an early expiration date. His whole life was dedicated to fighting and now old and frail, looks at the world from a perspective that "nothing he ever did, benefited anything" . I find his withdrawn character, his lack of speech and motivation to be my single favorite thing about 4.

I hope in the future, like Picasso etc, that the world one day realizes the subtle (almost biblical) awesomeness to be found in these games, besides the gameplay and "canon inconsistency"

it's not supposed to be viewed like star trek " canon says this happend here, this happened here" It's supposed to be viewed as an ambiguous mythical Hero's Journey"

The science behind which clone is superior etc. Is irrelevant. The theme behind it is: what we believe about ourselves shapes who we are, not just our genes. If you believe you are inferior at heart, you probably will self fulfill that thought into reality.

The "inferior" man can succeed if he believes in himself and what he is doing.
