If a fridge is a shortened term for refrigerator, then where is the original frigerator? AskReddit

So when we put food into our fridge, it is refrigerating that food, or making it cold again. So, where is the original frigerator that makes food cold the first time? And why do we call it a refrigerator if it sometimes is frigerating food for the first time.
