I've never had a more atrocious, terrible, horrible restaurant experience in my life. The single waiter in the entire restaurant seemed very attentive and eager to please, but the food was completely inedible.
I ordered the fajita chicken nachos. First of all, they were incredibly overpriced. At $7, they contained chips, globs of liquid cheese, pickled jalapenos, and pinto beans. All of the toppings, liquid cheese included, tasted like they came straight from a can. The liquid cheese had absolutely no flavor and had the weirdest texture (think the approximate taste and texture as warm spit). The worst part of the nachos, however, was the "fajita" chicken. At first glance, it was obvious that this was not fajita meat. It was soggy. At best, it came straight from a can. At the worst, it had been boiled on a previous day and the left to rot in a refrigerator (I'm guessing the chicken was pretty far along in the rotting process, if this were in fact the case).
When I pointed out that the chicken was not fajita chicken, the waiter just muttered something under his breath and walked away. He returned about 10 minutes later, informed me that he had spoken to his boss, and that the boss could make me "real" chicken. I politely declined at this point in time just because I wasn't sure anything could make those nachos edible. It did highly perturb me, though, that what I was served was not considered "real" chicken. It makes my stomach turn wondering what was, in fact, served to me. Was I served stray cat? Was it left over turkey from last year's Thanksgiving? It honestly tasted bad enough that if that were true, it wouldn't terribly surprise me.
The waiter was very kind and only charged me $4 for my meal. I am very disappointed in this meal, mostly because I really wanted a good Mexican restaurant close by.
Honestly, if you're looking for something to eat, you are better off going to the 7-11 next door and getting one of their $5.55 pizzas. Seriously. That pizza would be 10x better than whatever you could get at El Gato Loco.
