I've always been afraid of water.
Not like other people, not like the fear of drowning. That makes sense to me, but it's not why I'm afraid of water. Ever since I was little, I've had the same nightmare. It starts out different each time, but always ends the same. I'm taking a bath and when I get out the water comes to life to attack me. Or a glass of water on the table is suddenly empty and I know what's coming, I'm completely overwhelmed by fear. The water has become a being, an evil being that wants me.
My most recent dream was the strangest by far, leaving me with a sick haunting feeling. I dreamt a woman was crying. Crying and crying hysterically into her hands. Her hands started filling with water and dripping all over the floor.
I always wake up before I can actually see the creature it becomes. This time I'm not dreaming. I can feel its presence in the house, I just don't know where it's going to come from. I start to smell something familiar, like wet vegetables. I follow the smell from my bedroom into the hallway. I walk as softly as I can manage, listening intently. I hear distant crunching... there's a trail of water leading into the kitchen, it stops at the refrigerator door. I reach for the handle when i notice something strange at my feet. It's mixed in with the water. Very thin strands of something, like clear hair, I can't figure out what the hell it is. The fridge creaks open slowly and the dull light from within pours out into the room. I feel myself start to sweat when I suddenly realize I can hear water running from every faucet in the house. The fridge is gaping open, but it's completely empty... except for the vegetable drawer. It's full of water. I reach down to put my fingers in and feel the water, but nothing's there.
I hear a silence shattering crunch from behind me. The water creature. The evil being. I finally see it, and all the air escapes me. It's a giant fucking piece of celery. Goddamnit I hate celery.
