Hi all,
I've got my Christmas amaryllis from last year looking spectacular. it spent the spring and summer chilling with my orchids and taking in the sunshine. It got fairly large, sent out some lovely leaves and my boss (it's an office plant) remarked that it looks like a green Sideshow Bob.
But now, it's late October, it's time for the amaryllis to get some sleep before sending out some holiday blooms again. The problem is, this amaryllis lives in southern California half a mile from the beach. I move it to a shadier spot in the office hoping to mimic the lessened sunlight it would have somewhere with seasons and am watering it less frequently, but it doesn't seem to care. It's also not really going to "cool" as the nights here are going down to the 60s, and I understand it really needs 40s-50s to go properly dormant.
With other bulbs in the past I've done refrigerator forcing, and was planning to do the same here, but I've been waiting for the leaves to not look so darned healthy. From what I've read, you're not supposed to cut the leaves, and I don't want to damage it or anything, I just want it to flower again! So, how do I get an amaryllis with a climate identity crisis to take a break, and take a nap again?
TL;DR: how do I get an amaryllis to go dormant in a warm climate?
