I want to preface by saying I know what I'm doing inside a laptop. so feel free to get technical. My main source of income is buying/selling electronics over Craigslist. I got an HP SVE1712ACXB for $40 because the screen was "broken". Turns out just the ribbon cable was detached! ($500 laptop on ebay).
The only other issue now is that the screen does not go black when I shut the lid. I assume there is a sensor or button not being triggered. I know some laptops have a sort of pin that you depress when closing the lid and it tells the laptop to turn the screen black. This laptop does not seem to have one. I've taken the back off and I just am not sure what to look for. Can anyone describe what I should be trying to find to solve this problem?
I should mention this is not a driver or software issue. I have restored windows 8 to its defaults and played around with the power management settings. I believe this to be mechanical.
EDIT: I found an LVDS cable that did not appear to be loose. Could this be the culprit? I'm still rooting around trying to find the issue.
EDIT2: AHA! It's not the LVDS cable. Apparently new laptops dont use switches, and use magnets. When the magnets connect it cuts power to the screen. I found a magnet, now just to find out why it isnt working
EDIT3: Okay, on this laptop there are two magnets. There is one located under the plastic panel by the keyboard, near the left speaker. The other is behind the bezel of the LCD near the left speaker. I was missing one. Cut off a few pieces of a refrigerator magnet and it works like a charm! SOLVED
I'll leave this up for people who may google this in the future.
