There is a global butter shortage and supply has been tight in Canada for the past two years. Here in Winnipeg, stores were sold out in December. Canada has had to import butter in the past but with tighter global supply, this year may be more difficult (http://ift.tt/2y7ARNW). The Canadian Dairy Commission has done a piss poor job of predicting butter consumption, so don't bet on them getting it right this year.
Butter lasts for about 6-9 months in the refrigerator so no issues if you purchase some now for holiday baking. Get it before it runs out!
