Homeowner permit to rewire home. AHJ has adopted 2014 for new and reno work which is what this falls under. The only NEC exemptions my AHJ has are for historical homes on the historical register --which my home is not.
I was going to buy the breakers, pass inspection and then swap them back out for the old breakers but combo afci breakers are damn expensive... Is there an exemption process a homeowner can apply for? (Not even sure if that would vary between different AHJ.) Basically this is yuppie, affluent, first-world problems but still valid nonetheless. We have a lot of older or vintage, extremely high-end (restaurant quality) kitchen appliances. The blender, mixer, food processor, coffee bean grinder... even the two old refrigerators we have in the wet bar area (not kitchen) trip the AFCI breakers instantly.
I just don't want to do the dance and wondering if asking permission (vs. begging for forgiveness) is an option. I'm talking orders of magnitude of $400 so in the grand scheme of things buying the afci breakers is still far cheaper than if we had hired out this work. Thanks for any input. Wasn't sure if exemptions were a thing or not. Thanks.
