Previous landlord accepting payments on my behalf for an arrangement I never made with him? (Missouri) legaladvice

I recently moved from a place I had been living in for the past three years. When I first moved in there was no refrigerator, washer, or dryer, which I had no problem with. I went out and got all three of the appliances for around $360.

When I moved out this past summer, I left the appliances at the old place because my current residence had them already.

This past weekend, the woman who is currently renting my old place sent me a message on Facebook asking about the cost of utilities and wanting to know if I received the payments. I asked what she meant and she said that my previous landlord had told her that the previous tenant (me) had left the appliance with the plan of getting them later unless someone wanted to buy them off of me. She asked how much and he said he would call me and get back to her. He eventually came back to her with the amount of $500, which she paid.

I'm aware than in leaving the appliances, I forfeit ownership over to him. My issue, though, is that he is claiming to have an arrangement with me and is taking payments "on my behalf." Can he legally do that? I don't want the money, but the whole situation kind of has me perplexed...
