I worked on helicopters in the military and saw some creepy shit.. (Part 3) nosleep

This is where shit started to go downhill.

It was Mick’s idea to talk to Sam. Sam would know what to do. Sam would make it better.

Turns out… Sam only made it worse.

A couple nights after I almost had a knife stuck in my head, Mick and I went downstairs to talk to Sam after work. It was late when we made the visit - all of us worked together that night shift, and didn’t get off work until midnight. We didn’t have anything else to do but work and sleep, which was a boring life, so we went down to Sam’s for a couple drinks and to do some talking.

“So, Mick says you do Voodoo or some shit?” I looked around Sam’s room. It seemed pretty normal to me. I expected little voodoo dolls to be laying around, and spellbooks sitting on top of the dressers, but it was just dirty clothes scattered about and an Xbox sitting on a bookshelf.

“Kind of,” Sam said, “Not really though... It’s called Hoodoo.”

“The fuck?”

“Voodoo is a religion. Hoodoo is about learning and practicing magic. Real magic: herbal spells, remedies, and the such. It’s more complicated than that, but that’s the short and simple version.”

“So…” I asked, “Can it help us get rid of whatever is following us?”

“Maybe. What started it?”

“I don’t know for sure. I’ve seen weird things on duty at the squadron, and heard someone following me. Mick said he played with a Ouija board back in mech school, and now there’s something in our barracks room.”

“The barracks? You guys are right above me! I knew when I first got to the unit that it was haunted, but the barracks were safe.” Sam paused, obviously very concerned with what I had just told him. “You brought something with you.”

“How do we get rid of it?”

Sam got up from his seat, and rummaged through his drawers. “Well, first I’m going to give you a couple of candles. I want you to set them up exactly like I say, on your dressers. Then, I’m going to say a couple of prayers I know. The goal is to drive out whatever you brought with you.”

“Sounds good.” I stood up. I wanted to be confident in Sam’s abilities, but something didn’t feel right. It was that feeling of being watched. It was following me everywhere now. I didn’t know when or where the sense would arise, but I felt it now. We were being watched. Followed. CRASH! Something hit the floor in the room above us. My room.

“Holy shit!” Mick stood up instantly, spooked.

We listened as something scraped across the floor above. It was slow and labored, but I could hear a dresser dragging across the floor. It was as if someone had decided that the early hours of the morning was the perfect time to start rearranging the furniture in their room.

“We have to get back up there!” Mick announced.

“Fuck that,” I said.

“Take these. I’ll be right up,” Sam reassured us, handing over the candles he had pulled out of the drawers. “Light them as soon as you get back.”

We left Sam’s room, and headed up the stairs to the second floor, where we stayed. The hallways that connected the barracks rooms seemed suddenly dark and foreboding. Though we heard noise coming from my room, and I was certain there was still something in there, I still felt like we were being followed. Just how many of these things are there??? I thought.

We stopped in front of the main door to our room. “Want to open it?” I asked Mick.

“Pussy.” Mick pulled out his keycard and walked up to the door.

KNOCK! KNOCK! KNOCK!

Something was knocking on the inside of our barracks door. “Shit!” Mick jumped.

KNOCK! KNOCK! KNOCK!

There it was again.

I turned around. “Let’s wait for Sam.”

My timing couldn’t have been more perfect, because Sam had just come up the stairwell, and was walking down the hall towards us. “Sam!” I announced, “It’s still inside. I don’t think we should go in.”

“Don’t! I just talked to it.”

“We barely just got up here. What the fuck?”

“I know… I tried to say a prayer, but I was interrupted. I could see and hear it. It talked to me.”

“What did it say?” I was thoroughly freaked out now.

“It told me horrible things. It says it’s seen people get killed, and tortured. It says it’s scared… wants a place to stay. So it followed you.”

“So it’s supposed to be good? I’m supposed to let it stay in my room???”

“Just tonight,” Sam said. “I don’t know enough about it. We might make it mad.”

“As if it isn’t already. It’s throwing my shit around!” I was starting to get angry. I was still scared, but now I was pissed at this ghost demon thing following me around.

“It’s just restless. Trust me. You can come back tomorrow. Enter your room during the daytime and stay there to establish it as your own. If it’s good, it will stay away. If it’s bad. the candles will help.”

“Fuck that!” Mick said, raising his keycard to the door. It beeped, and the lock disengaged.

I walked over to his side, just as he opened the door. The light in the common area was still not working, but there was enough filtering in from the hall to see the mess.

Glass had shattered on the floor, and made a mess. Every single drawer and cabinet was open. The refrigerator had been pulled out from the wall a few inches and sat at a cockeyed angle.

More mysterious than the mess, though, was the light. I could see my bedroom door, and there was a light coming from underneath. All the lights in our barracks rooms are motion sensitive, and I had been gone from my room all day. I hadn’t even returned after work to get changed. We just headed straight to Sam’s room. My room was supposed to be empty.

KNOCK! KNOCK! KNOCK!

The knocking came from inside my bedroom this time.

KNOCK! KNOCK! KNOCK!

“Let’s go,” Sam decided.

We agreed, and turned to go. We didn’t have work the next day, and no inspections coming up, so hopefully no sergeants would see the mess in my room and freak out on me. I wasn’t about to stay the night in my room.

Just as we reached the end of the hall, I heard a tiny, dark voice whisper into my ears, “Time to play… time to play…”
