This might be obvious to some, but I hope these help:
-
Do any food shopping in the evening, or before the supermarket closes. They often lower the prices so that they can avoid waste stock and prepare for the next day.
-
If it's a hot day and you want a drink that's cool and will last you for the day, don't buy a drink from a refrigerator. Instead, go to the 2L drinks aisle, where they're not refrigerated, take your drink and put in the frozen section while you get the rest of your things. Give it 20 minutes and you'll have a much larger and cheaper chilled drink than you would have if you got one out of the fridge. This is especially effective in self-service checkouts.
-
Look up and down on the shelves. The most expensive brands tend to be in your eyeline, while the cheaper items are found right at the bottom or the very top. Note that when you approach the sweets/candy aisle, the most expensive products are much lower down so that they can be seen by children.

Ignore price slashes, unless you're actually familiar with the normal prices. Supermarkets tend to play around with RRP (list price) to make it look like a bargain, when in reality they make a costly estimate of the product then lower it to its normal price. In other words, if it says "you save %", you're actually not saving at all. Opt for 2 for 1 deals instead.
