Did manufacturers start making way less efficient refrigerators or did they just start testing them under more realistic conditions? energy

Maybe 5 years ago when I was looking for a nice french door refrigerator I found a lot that said they used 400-500 kwh/year. More recently the ones I'm finding say 700-800 kwh/year.
